UPCOMING EXHIBITION Shaping Space Leslie Pontz

Joan Mondale Gallery March 6 - May 31, 2013 Opening reception Thursday, March 6, 6:00 pm Artist will be in attendance "Ms. Pontz is especially inventive blending cotton thread with wire, fabric, iron and chain to make abstract botanical forms.” — New York Times Known for her innovative use of materials and techniques, Leslie Pontz’s sculptures take the traditional textile form of crochet and turn it upside down and inside out, playing with a unique blend of organic materials to create thoughtprovoking and visually complex modern sculptural fiber forms. While Philadelphia-based Pontz’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, Textile Center is pleased to be the first to bring this contemporary fiber artist and her genre-bending pieces to Minnesota and the Upper Midwest. In partnership with Twin Cities Public Television (TPT), Textile Center will produce a short film based on Pontz's visit for broadcast on a regional network of six PBS stations, for streaming on the web and via social media, and for other educational purposes, in order to promote excellence and innovation in the field of fiber arts.

Materials fee $25, payable to the instructor. Supply list provided. Instructor: Sandra Brick $40/$35 Textile Center Members

In the first two sessions, create your own stencils for katazome, a Japanese paste-resist stencildyeing technique. This paper is made from mulberry fiber and is smoked with persimmon tannin, making it water resistant and strong. The concept of Notan, the Japanese word meaning light-dark, will be introduced as part of the design process. You may create original designs or use design resources provided. In the remaining sessions, you’ll apply your stencil designs to fabric using rice paste resist, and then brush on natural pigments and dyes and learn about the uses of soymilk in surface design. Each student will complete two lengths of Katazome approximately 22”x 36”, 1 hemp and 1 silk. Use your completed work in your own projects. Materials fee $58, payable to the instructor.
