A

day of non-stop drawing, open to the public. This is an opportunity for continuous, intensive figure drawing with a model or models in sustained poses and still life set-ups. Participants of all skill levels, ages 16 and up, will be able to work alongside Silvermine faculty, Guild Artist members and students to develop their artistic vision, sharpen skills and energize their studio experience through drawing.

he School of Art will be celebrating it’s 90th birthday in 2014 and in honor of this special time, we wanted to include the student body by having our Annual Student Exhibition during the May 3rd Birthday Bash. This year’s Student Exhibition will now be in April instead of June to be included in the School’s birthday party celebration. This exhibition showcases the artistic achievement of Silvermine students of all ages, offering the public a view of the fine art and creative energy that is generated by the student body. This session explores the great period of artistic /scientific and cultural evolution when the modern world as we know it today was truly born—as evidenced by the breathtaking artistic creations of Renaissance Italy and the Netherlands during the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries.

This session will offer a visual framework for some of the more significant works from that profound period in art and cultural history—putting in “perspective” the artists and the times in which they were created.

Touching Rembrandt: Early Masters of Printmaking

T

he inventions of printmaking changed the Western world forever. Although prints were made in Asia centuries earlier - it wasn’t until the Mid-Fifteenth century that the invention of the printing press truly enabled books and artworks to reach a mass audience in Europe. This session will explore the essentials of the various modes of early printmaking and their greatest artistic exponents. Learn the difference between varieties of prints—how to tell them apart—and how to begin to determine the authentic from the reproduction. Mitche Kunzman has been an internationally recognized expert in the field of the Rajput and Islamic Paintings of India for over thirty years - and a specialist in European old master drawings and prints. He is also an accomplished painter and curator. Over the course of decades he has worked as a consultant with major international auction houses and private collectors and museums. Since 1982 he has been President of Artifacts Collections of New York Inc a firm dealing in the sale and conservation of early works of art on paper from Europe and Asia and is cofounder and Director of Artifacts Lanier (the Darien CT gallery which has relocated to South Salem NY) offering critically acclaimed exhibitions of contemporary and old master artworks. Mitche Kunzman was lead consultant for the London-based auction house Phillips Son and Neale during their New York City sales of Rajput and Islamic paintings during the early 1980’s. He had procured and evaluated 102 lots of important Indian miniature paintings for the groundbreaking Sotheby’s New York sale of Southeast Asian Art in March 1987. He is currently Expert for Indian Painting and Drawings for Auctionata AG—a Berlin Germany based online auction house, which has recently garnered much media attention and many awards.

hat’s off the table, what’s on? What’s acceptable, what’s not? How does art change the conversation of sex? Has it lost its electric ability to shock to religion and politics? What’s been lost? What’s been discovered? This lecture considers Sex and Art, inextricable partners who define culture, family, identity, pleasure and pain, prime movers behind painting and sculpture, photography and film. The subject of Sex and Art alerts us to questions of censorship and identity, selfcensorship or public. How have artists been unconsciously directed by sex, motivated by sex. What does contemporary science tell us about art and sex? How do artists use sex and art differently from period to period from culture to culture? How have artists been both unwitting victims and forces for change? How are contemporary artists using sex for cultural examination, for personal expression, as a tool for notoriety? How has art both illuminated and obscured the subject of sex?

Drawing Abstraction and Decoration David Dunlop

A

bstraction and decoration; how do two apparently separate roads share the same route, same functions, same language? Why do we question and doubt abstractions in painting, photography and sculpture but embrace them in jewelry and clothing? How abstract is all of realism? Is every painting decorative? Here’s an examination of our will to order, to ornament, to decorate ourselves and the elements of our world. Where are the sources of inspiration? What are the mechanisms in the mind and body that generate abstractions? How do we discover new alphabets using an old one? How do we invent patterns and re-purpose shapes? Do materials determine the Image? Do cultural demands? Why do we only see what we recognize? How does the history of art serve as the gate of discovery and innovation for artists? What stimulates abstract and decorative art? David Dunlop is exhaustively well read in pursuit of the underlying principles of art, exploring original sources and recent advances in neuroscience. That he is eager to share his discoveries can be seen in the titles of his 2006-2014 lecture series for the Silvermine Arts Center. David’s reputation as a painter who combines artistic skill, knowledge and enthusiasm prompted the Metropolitan Museum of Art to invite him to lecture on 4000 years of landscape painting in 2005. He has been a visiting artist/lecturer at multiple institutions, including the Montclair Art Museum, Montclair, NJ; New Britain Museum of American Art, New Britain, CT; Caramoor Museum of Art, Katonah, NY; Shelburne Museum, Shelburne, VT; and Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Tucson, AZ. His PBS program on Cezanne was included in the exhibit Cezanne and American Modernism at the Montclair Art Museum. Mr. Dunlop graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the College of Wooster, Wooster, OH, and was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus in 2011. His MFA is from the Pratt Institute, NY, NY. He is on the faculty of the celebrated Silvermine School of Art in New Canaan, CT, where he teaches painting, gives workshops and leads groups of art students to Italy, France and Japan.

tudents learn to “see” the figure and head; investigate the complex color of skin and how to paint or draw it. Close attention is paid to the skeletal and muscular structure beneath the skin. We continue with tonal work then develop limited and full color studies identifying and understanding warm and cool color values in the portrait and figure. Covered in the course will be proportions, articulation and flow, planes, values and the systematic construction of the human form. Students can work in oils, pastels or acrylics.

e begin by learning how to measure using our eye, how to create the proportions of our subject. When applying these methods of measurement and proportion, we give drama and expression to our drawings. Learn about shading, perspective and composition. his course will offer a comprehensive foundation in drawing for both beginners and those who wish to practice and brush up on their drawing skills. Working with a variety of dry materials, students learn to use line, value, gesture and perspective. Students will draw from observation; participants will learn to reorient their minds, focusing on the relationship of space rather than objects, working with still life, figure and landscape.

tudents will study the structure of the head, the skull, the muscles, the planes on the face, and the features. They will also learn to create skin tone through color studies improving their observational skills and gaining understanding of color and value. Emphasis is on completing and refining one’s work in oil painting. Painting will be completed from the live model.

Drawing and Painting the Human Figure and Portrait Josephine Robinson

his course will teach students an awareness of the components needed to paint a three dimensional, representational painting, using the nude model as subject matter. The course will concentrate on one pose throughout the semester. The student will begin by completing a drawing of the posed figure during the first five weeks. This will be followed by a five-week session in which the student will paint the figure in the same pose. Students may concentrate on drawing and painting the portrait instead of the whole figure. Once an understanding of the pose of the figure or head has been gained through the drawing session of the first five-weeks, the student will then repeat the exercise, with the same pose, using oil paints. There will be demonstrations throughout the course.

ncrease your confidence in the way you draw, paint or sculpt the human figure. Learn how forces exerted on the body can dramatically change the shape of the body. Be aware of some major bones or muscles that do the most work, and change the outward appearance of the body the most. Male and female models will alternate through the course and lectures, class handouts and drawing demonstrations will also be included. Depth of anatomical study depends on personal requirements and interests. Previous study of the human figure in any media is preferred, but all levels of drawing experience are welcome.

n modeling the studios of the Renaissance, the 19th Century French academies taught classical drawing as the foundation of all the visual arts. The realistic and representational craftsmanship formulated by the masters. Beginners to advanced students will receive individualized instruction to gain skills for their goals as an artist living in this age. The curriculum will cover linear perspective; the time honored dot, line, shape and form method; value scale; proportions; five elements of light; composition; and how reality is abstracted and translated into a 2-D artistic form. First half of the course will be devoted to still life, cast drawing, and materials and methods; the second half will be dedicated to draped and nude figure.

Focus on Abstraction– Drawing & Painting

his ten-week session is ideal for someone who wants to start, execute and finish one painting or drawing. For the narrative artist, there will be a sustained pose for the entire session. The still life artist will have an individual set-up tailored to meet his or her needs. For the landscape artist, there will be individual guidance in making nature look natural. Throughout the ten-weeks, there will be demonstrations: first the use of composition to express your idea and second how to apply the finishing touches to your artwork, as that is the first thing the viewer will see.

Perfecting your Personal Vision

his course is open-ended and the student driven art experience will focus on abstract drawing and painting materials and techniques as well as the thought process to open up our individual hands-on drawing and painting. Along the way we will develop specific criteria for self-evaluation. Students will explore contemporary abstraction and investigate ways to generate and process their own abstract imagery to create a body of work. Discussion topics may include geometric, expressive, narrative, symbolic abstraction as well as hybrid imagery.

his course is for the beginner or returning student to learn the fundamentals of drawing and painting. We begin with basic sketching techniques that teach students how to accurately record what they see: turning line into shape, shape into form and form into composition. The second half of the course will introduce painting, color mixing, paint application, glazing, texture, and aerial and linear perspective. These sessions will be aimed at creating a still life and landscape. There will be teacher demonstrations at each session and personal guidance for students.

iscover how even the smallest mark or color on a two-dimensional surface impacts the relationships that form your compositions. We will use a multitude of media including soft pastel, charcoal and colored ink wash. You will compose dynamic figure drawings from the model that utilize bold textures, vivid color and energetic line. You make extended studies allowing time to layer materials and create a visual balance between contrasts. You also make quick gesture studies based on basic art principles of line, space and volume.

his course is for the student who wishes to continue their studies or for the beginner who wishes to study botanical drawing, working with colored pencils. The versatility of colored pencils will create either drawing or painting effects. n this multimedia workshop we will combine drawing with collage. We will experiment with realistic imagery and delight in the abstract in a new arena of discovery. No prior experience is necessary; all you need is an inquisitive mind and a sense of adventure. There will be a brief introduction to both media and how they can be used together. Please come to the workshop with a good pair of scissors and quality colored pencils. Collage and other materials are included. All levels welcomed.

ould you like to see what happens to your drawings when you just let your mind flow? This class takes a broad approach towards imaginative creativity from fantasy, memory, abstractions, distortions, making odd combinations and connections between seemingly unrelated ideas, and even doodling. Exercises start directly from the mind and move into visualizing ideas through abstracting, texturing, angling and merging. Drawings will begin in charcoal, pencil, and pen. Color will be added to selected drawings and a final canvas can be completed for those who want to transfer their images into paint.

Getting More Out of Your Figure Drawing Gary Speziale

he goal of this workshop is to move the artist away from isolated solitary figures on a page. The model takes a series of poses from which you will create a figural composition. The model will repeat the same cycle of poses several times throughout the course of the workshop, to enable you to develop, alter, and enhance your overall composition and refine the rendering of the individual figures. The repetition of the poses allows the more experienced draftsman to take their work to the next level while allowing the beginner to approach the pose with hindsight. The workshop will begin with a brief discussion of compositional techniques. Open to artists of all levels, working in all drawing media.

his workshop builds on the concept of the Getting More…workshop, increasing the possibilities and complexities by using two models who will repeat the same cycle of poses several times throughout the workshop. The final judgment of a painting—even a giant landscape with a solitary, tiny figure—is how well the artist rendered the figure.

While painting in turn thinly and broadly, brushwork is studied as a means of delineating contours, blocking in masses of light and shadow, and establishing transitional passages. We will work with paint diluted to wash-like effect, as well as with richly saturated pigment, interpreting the human subject by way of a paint application that is both varied and coherent.

n this fast paced and very hands-on workshop, you will learn to make 3-dimensional forms in metal without having to solder a single thing! The forms you will make are beautiful, strong, unique and perfect for combining with polymer clay, resins, metal clay, Faux Boneä, and almost any other material you may like. We will cover making the hammer most used in fold forming and with little more than that hammer and a block to hammer on, you will be able to make forms that seem complex and technically difficult but are actually fast and easy. We will explore the use of cold connections in order to add these forms to the work and we will cover the use of several different patinas. f you use metal clay (or even if you don’t) here’s your chance to use that fabulous material and combine it with another terrific material - Faux Bone. You will begin by making a texture plate from polymer clay; texture your metal clay with the plate and torch fire the metal clay. You will then fashion a cuff from Faux Bone and rivet the metal clay to the cuff. You can put in any sort of surface design you like and then color it with alcohol inks or acrylic paint or you can leave it white and scratch designs in the surface. Faux Bone is nearly unbreakable so attaching your metal clay to it allows you to work with very thin pieces of metal clay. Working with thin (very thin) metal clay pieces also allows you to stretch your metal clay dollars to the max. Participants can expect to finish at least one bracelet during the workshop.

lag books are a type of “pop-up” book, made from scratch using cardboard and paper. The spine is folded like an accordion and the pages are glued such that when opened they pop up and display like “flags.” These flags are emblazoned with the artist’s images: drawings, paintings, collaged images, or words. They can be shown as sculpture on the tabletop or pedestal, or can be closed up and stored on the shelf like a book. In this workshop each student will create their own flag book, using personal imagery and mixed media. The structure of the flag book will be taught and can be used over and over in new and different ways.

Handling a Knife with Style

n this very hands-on workshop you will create a completely unique and customized knife to be used in the kitchen, hang as a showpiece or carry on your next hunting expedition. You will begin by selecting a knife blank style, either a chefs or paring knife, a decorative knife or a small hunting knife. The handle will be made from Faux Bone™. It can have the look and feel of bone or ivory. If not bone, it can resemble ceramic, wood or antler or be used as a blank “canvas” for any design you desire. To make the knife uniquely your own you will be able to decorate the handle in any number of ways including inlay, metal appliqué, dyeing, painting, carving, or scrimshaw. If using this last technique you can “etch” the handle with tools. Rub in special paint and dyes to color your etching and the result will be a unique knife decorated.

The immediacy of the artist’s hand is kept throughout the process. One can achieve a broad range of effects, from fine line drawing to transparent washes or deep rich areas of color. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced printmaker, this course presents the unique properties of lithography. Explore a variety of techniques in a collaborative atmosphere. Special attention is given to the student’s personal expression and how it translates within the medium. No prior printmaking experience is required.

veryone is successful in printmaking! Your work is immediate and it’s a very freeing medium allowing artists to expand their creativity and to see their work less literally. Students will be guided through several printmaking techniques: monotypes, paper lithography, solar etching, and transfer techniques. Additional applications of chine collé, and printing on canvas and stone will be covered. There will be teacher demonstration, both abstract and representational, during the class, and students will be shown how to create painterly prints with pastels and paints. earn one of the easiest and most enjoyable methods of making monotypes by using a gelatin slab as a printmaking plate. In this workshop Akua inks, acrylic paints and watercolors will be painted directly onto a transparent surface made of gelatin. Using both handmade and commercially produced plates, participants will roll, brush, stamp, layer and texture onto this reusable substrate day one to make fine art prints on rag paper. No press is required for this fun, quick and addictive process, taking monoprinting to a new level. No experience in printmaking necessary.

ere is a unique way for artists to bring wax into their printmaking practice. Encaustic collagraph is a painterly process using wax textures and brushes to build up a printing surface on a plexiglass plate. These textural plates are created with hot wax, inked up with Akua soy base inks and printed on traditional etching papers. Subtle, mysterious marks result allowing for variable prints. Participants will make and print plates on day one. Day two will be devoted to exploring multiple plate enhancements, chine colle applications and monotype additions.

ake your figure drawing and painting to the next level in this unique workshop, which seamlessly combines printmaking with the figure. Working from a live model, students will draw onto plexi-glass sheets using oil-based ink and solvent. Then, the ink will be printed onto 100% rag paper to create a one of a kind print, or a monotype. Techniques for applying the ink, creating various textures, and ways to combine the process with other media will be discussed and demonstrated. This process is endlessly enjoyable and doesn’t require any prior printmaking experience. Beginners or more advanced students are welcome.

The medium has been transformed with new techniques. Basic introduction includes preparation of enamel, working with opaque and transparent colors, dry sifting and wet inlaying techniques. Techniques covered include: stenciling, watercolor, marker, rubber stamps, luster, basse taille (enamel over texture), sgraffito (scratching through enamel to create patterns), and cloisonné (wire separation enamel). Wire is not just confined to jewelry, but can be used to make vessels, baskets, lampshades and other wonderful home accessories. Even sculpture can be created with wire. Best of all, it’s low-tech and does not require a lot of fancy tools to work with. n this fast paced and very hands-on workshop, you will learn to make 3-dimensional forms in metal without having to solder a single thing! The forms you will make are beautiful, strong, unique and perfect for combining with polymer clay, resins, metal clay, Faux Boneä, and almost any other material you may like. We will cover making the hammer most used in fold forming and with little more than that hammer and a block to hammer on, you will be able to make forms that seem complex and technically difficult but are actually fast and easy. We will explore the use of cold connections in order to add these forms to the work and we will cover the use of several different patinas. Students can expect to leave with numerous examples and or a finished piece.

or students who want to learn the basics of soldered chain making, this will teach you simple link and bar chains with a few easy variations. Chain making is a great way to fine-tune your soldering skills, providing the ability to see how you progress as you make smaller and smaller link chains over time. Students will be able to make at least a bracelet length chain, if not a necklace length one, during the course of the day. If you have a pendant you’ve wanted to hang, bring it to class to help you decide on your design. Requirements: Students should be comfortable with at least the basics of soldering. More experienced soldiers will be shown more challenging variations if they so choose.

et a basic introduction to the techniques of loop in loop chain. Learn about fusing fine silver links and turning them into single and double loop in loop chains. The process for making these beautiful chains starts out frustrating, but can quickly become one of the most relaxing aspects of jewelry making there is. Additionally, fusing links can be done at home with fairly inexpensive and safe equipment. The techniques learned here are the bases for numerous other variations of closedloop chain designs you may want to try in the future. Students should not necessarily expect to complete a necklace-length chain but may be able to finish a bracelet length chain. Finishing (end capping) techniques will be discussed. Requirements: Students should be reasonably comfortable with a torch.

f you use metal clay (or even if you don’t) here’s your chance to use that fabulous material and combine it with another terrific material - Faux Bone. You will begin by making a texture plate from polymer clay; texture your metal clay with the plate and torch fire the metal clay. You will then fashion a cuff from Faux Bone and rivet the metal clay to the cuff. You can put in any sort of surface design you like and then color it with alcohol inks or acrylic paint or you can leave it white and scratch designs in the surface. Faux Bone is nearly unbreakable so attaching your metal clay to it allows you to work with very thin pieces of metal clay. Working with thin (very thin) metal clay pieces also allows you to stretch your metal clay dollars to the max. Participants can expect to finish at least one bracelet during the workshop.

Handling a Knife with Style

n this very hands-on workshop you will create a completely unique and customized knife to be used in the kitchen, hang as a showpiece or carry on your next hunting expedition. You will begin by selecting a knife blank style, either a chefs or paring knife, a decorative knife or a small hunting knife. The handle will be made from Faux Bone™. It can have the look and feel of bone or ivory. If not bone, it can resemble ceramic, wood or antler or be used as a blank “canvas” for any design you desire. To make the knife uniquely your own you will be able to decorate the handle in any number of ways including inlay, metal appliqué, dyeing, painting, carving, or scrimshaw. If using this last technique you can “etch” the handle with tools. Rub in special paint and dyes to color your etching and the result will be a unique knife decorated.

his workshop starts with the basics of cutting, copper foiling and soldering stained glass, then quickly moves on to learning modern techniques of hand painting, air brushing, and silk-screening onto glass. Enamel paints are kiln fired on to the glass, a tradition that dates back to medieval times. Expect to learn more than techniques. The class includes demonstrations of layering, lighting, framing and hanging stained glass, along with design and how to have fun within this very historic medium. The first class there will be a discussion and worksheet to help the students see and decide the direction of their art. I want more serious thought to go into the design and meaning of the work before we start the process.

You will learn unusual approaches to surface treatment using colored slips and pattern-making materials. Beyond the nuts and bolts of technique, Hayne discusses at length pottery’s aesthetic considerations and how technique will affect aesthetic concerns and vice versa. tudents bring their bisque pieces and spend the day glazing and firing in the raku kiln. We will do a combination of firings: traditional raku, naked raku, and horsehair. For best results, students should use white stoneware clay, which may be purchased in advance. Pieces can be bisque fired in Silvermine’s kiln two weeks prior to the date of the workshop. We will accommodate as many firings as the day allows. Expect to get 4 to 5 medium size (approximately 8 x 8 x 8 inches would be considered medium size) pieces fired. Pieces should be based on cylindrical forms, not flat, or over 10 lbs. Students must wear cotton clothing that covers arms and legs, sturdy shoes, and hair must be tied back. Workshop may be cancelled due to weather. An alternative date will be discussed at a later date.

This course gives participants an opportunity to discover the history and process required to complete a bronze piece. Students will create one bronze sculpture. Bas-Relief Sculpture Liza Masalimova

as-Relief is the form of sculpting that is closest to drawing. Students will use water-based clay to create a relief sculpture of a single pose. Great for ceramic students as a supplemental sculpture, as the resulting bas-relief can be fired and glazed. Students will sculpt a relief using clay and a board as backing. The resulting sculpture will resemble a drawing that came to life, and will have a striking three-dimensional effect when viewed from the front. Clay is included. There is an additional firing fee charge for students who wish to have their pieces bisque fired.

Portfolio Development (Ages: 15-17) The portfolio development courses allow students to create a group of well-executed works of art to be used for college admission. Conferences to review student portfolios and how to meet specific college requirements will be included. Many of the art school portfolio assignments (self-portraits, portraits, figure drawings and paintings) will be done in class.

oung artists will make unusual artwork from an assemblage of different forms through an exploration with usual materials. They will create a new whole while developing skills and social experience. In this weeklong meeting, we start with one material and will build with ideas, studies, development, discussion, construction and imagination through an individual process of knowing more about what you are making through a surface/space. As an end result, young artists will have worked through several materials to a final larger project, while developing perspective. They will have the opportunity to develop a variety of techniques and skills and ways of seeing in the making of 2 and 3D art, using clay, paint, charcoal, artist pencil, actual and visual textured paper and more. The school will supply all materials. Students should bring a snack without nuts.

ilvermine School of Art provides year-round art instruction for adults, youths and juniors. Fall, winter, spring and summer sessions offer daytime and evening classes Monday through Sunday. Special weekend and week-long workshops are held throughout the year. The School actively seeks to attract qualified persons to its faculty and staff, and encourages diversity in its student body. Student development is supported through academic counseling and by maintaining an environment which contributes to intellectual stimulation. Cultural and educational programs are made available further that growth. Silvermine School of Art reserves the right to require the withdrawal of any student whose conduct is deemed inappropriate.

Membership Fee

tudents may become members of the Silvermine Arts Center. Students do not have to be a member to attend a course, but if a student is a member, the registration fee is waived. Please see page 1 for membership levels. This fee is an annual fee and covers up to four semesters. Memberships are tax deductible.

E

ach term a $35 non-refundable registration fee is charged for workshop or course enrollment. This fee includes any number of registered classes within each term. There is no registration fee for one-day and two-day workshops. This fee is waived for Guild Members and members of the Silvermine Arts Center.

Enrollment

F

or courses to be conducted a minimum enrollment is required. In addition, there can be a maximum enrollment based on the studio size, equipment and the instructor’s requirements.

Course or Workshop Changes

T

he School reserves the right to change its calendar, withdraw or modify courses or workshops. The School reserves the right to use substitute instructors, as needed. Classes or workshops not held due to bad weather or instructor’s absence will be rescheduled according to studio availability. There are no refunds due to classes or workshops not held due to bad weather or instructor’s absences.

Attendance

T

here are no make-ups or refunds if a student cannot attend a regularly scheduled class or make-up class or workshop. Students who cannot attend a regularly scheduled class or workshop cannot substitute another person in their place.

Cancellations

I

f the School cancels a course or workshop, all fees will be refunded. In the event a course or workshop is cancelled due to low enrollment or teacher’s absence, notice will be given one to three days prior to the course or workshop start date.

Refunds for Courses

T

he student must notify the School Office with an official withdrawal form before the first class meets to receive a refund. All fees will be refunded except for a $35 service charge, non-refundable registration and/ or membership fee. A pro-rated tuition fee will be refunded to a student withdrawing after the starting date of the course, only if notification in writing is given to the School Office before the second class meets. Refunds take four to six weeks to process. No refunds will be given for any reason, including written withdrawal requests, after the second class meets. Only if a student withdraws for a medical emergency with a doctor’s note, upon the approval of the School Director, may a pro-rated tuition credit can be considered. All withdrawals must be in writing. If credit is issued, there will be an expiration date and must be used within that date. There are no substitutions or transfers for granted credits. The above refund policy does not include workshops. See policy below.

Waiver for Pictures Taken/Used

Refunds for Workshops

T

he student must notify the School Office at least one week (five business days) prior to the scheduled workshop date in order to receive a refund for withdrawal. If a student notifies the School Office with an official withdrawal, a refund will be granted minus a $10 service charge, and any non-refundable registration and membership fees. Refunds take four to six weeks to process. No refunds will be given for withdrawal after the start of the workshop. Students who register five days or less before the workshops start date cannot receive a refund. All withdrawal requests must be in writing. Withdrawal request forms are available in the School Office and must be returned to the School Office before the Director of the School of Art considers any credit. There are no substitutions or transfers for granted credits. There will be an expiration date and must be used within that date.

Scholarships

F

inancial assistance will be considered for children, grades K through 12, who require our support to enroll in a course at the Silvermine School of Art. Students are selected for full or partial scholarships by the Scholarship Committee. Scholarship request forms are available in the School Office. Completed forms must be returned to our office by Friday, January 3, 2014. Silvermine Arts Center raises funds in order to provide scholarships, as needed. If you would like to make a contribution to the Scholarship Fund, please contact Executive Director, Leslee Asch, at 203-966-9700, Ext. 15.

Degree Credit

S

ome institutions have granted credit in their degree program to students who have satisfactorily completed study courses at the Silvermine School of Art. Those desirous of obtaining degree credit for their studies at Silvermine must obtain approval for such an arrangement from their dean, registrar, faculty advisor, or other official at their home institution.

S

ilvermine Arts Center occasionally documents classes using photographs and video for publicity purposes. These images are used in the course brochure, advertisements, and other publicity materials for the benefit of the School. Registration in a course at Silvermine Arts Center assumes permission to photograph you and/or your artwork, and to use your image in publicity materials, unless you inform the photographer that you do not wish to have your picture taken. If you prefer that Silvermine Arts Center not photograph your child for publicity purposes, please notify the School Office at the time of registration.

The Silvermine Arts Center

T

he Silvermine School of Art is a program of the Silvermine Arts Center. Artists have been drawn to Silvermine since visionary sculptor Solon Borglum moved there in 1908 and established it as a place for artists to gather. The Silvermine Guild of Artists was founded in 1922 and formally incorporated as a 501(c) (3) organization in 1924 when the School of Art was established. Today, in addition to the Silvermine School of Art, the Silvermine Arts Center consists of a Guild of over 300 professional artists, five galleries presenting new exhibitions every six weeks and sponsoring prestigious regional and national competitions; an art and fine craft shop; public programs; and outreach programs in the Norwalk and Stamford schools. The Silvermine Arts Center’s many programs are supported by membership fees, school tuition, art sales, donations, grants and sponsorship. hroughout the year Silvermine Arts Center’s professional Teaching Artists provide workshops to underserved communities. Whether in school, after school, on our Campus or in elder care centers, the arts assist students of all ages to reach their full potential through joyous self-expression. For students in Stamford and Norwalk schools, the classes are designed to encourage critical thinking, collaboration and literacy skills to help close the achievement gap that exists in Connecticut public schools. We are currently reviewing all of our existing partnerships and new requests we have received for the programs. We have many more requests than we can fulfill without additional funding. Please consider a gift so that we may continue providing free and subsidized classes for our underserved local communities.
