Take a closer look, and you’ll find that it has never been easier to configure the ideal solution for your particular transport needs. Because the Vito defines how state-of-the-art vehicle technology can be applied to the commercial sector to produce a wide range of variants capable of meeting highly specific requirements. Take the engines, for example. No less than five high-performance powerplants are available: three CDI diesels with outputs from 65 to 110 kW (88 to 150 hp) and two petrol units which develop 140 and 170 kW (190 and 231 hp) respectively. Stay flexible One of the Vito’s most valuable characteristics is its ability to adapt quickly to different situations, an attribute which is largely due to the flexible seating concept. An optional twin co-drivers’ seat can be specified instead of the single version. Optional luxury seats or electrically adjustable luxury seats are also available as alternatives to the standard driver and co-driver seats. The passenger compartment can be equipped with various combinations of seat rows which are designed for quick installation and removal and which can be adjusted longitudinally thanks to an optional floor-rail system. In the case of the extra-long Vito, for example, it’s reassuring to know that you can call on the maximum loading length of 3.10 m (incl. through-loading facility) and the maximum
cargo area of 3.57 m2 (with rear seats removed) if you ever have to transport a large or unwieldy load. Having boarded the Vito easily through the wide-opening sliding side door, the passengers find themselves in the attractive, fully panelled interior which can be individualised with numerous equipment options – such as a front sliding /tilting glass sunroof, a rear panoramic roof, an additional sliding door on the driver’s side or an air conditioning system for the rear section of the vehicle (available in combination with a cockpit air conditioning system). If you’re looking for it, we’ve got it Comprising no less than two wheelbases, three body lengths and a selection of door variants, the Vito range allows you to configure vehicles which are capable of handling the most diverse transport jobs and load situations in the class up to 3 tonnes. With its 475 exceptionally dynamic and manoeuvrable centimetres, the compact Vito measures up admirably when it comes to coping with difficult entrances, tight parking spaces and congested city centres. The long Vito has the same 3200 mm wheelbase but a 245 mm longer rear overhang – all of which benefits the luggage space without impacting the vehicle’s handling or manoeuvrability. The extra-long Vito, which features an extended 3430 mm wheelbase, quite simply offers a vast amount of space.

Delivering the feel-good factor Given its excellent performance in every other respect, it comes as no surprise to find that the Vito easily meets the highest standards with regard to interior design and equipment levels in the crewbus/minibus segment. The spaciousness and bright, welcoming look of the driver’s area strike you the moment you open the driver’s door while the low access height is a particularly welcome feature on runs which involve frequent stops. Inside you’ll find that the comfortable driver’s and co-driver’s seats offer numerous adjustment options and feature height-adjustable head restraints right from the standard version. Optional luxury seats and seat heating or the fully electrically adjustable luxury seats can be specified for even greater comfort. Two different twin codrivers’ bench seats are also available as options.

The pleasing cockpit, with its horizontally divided instrument panel – the upper section of which has a soft-touch surface – is characterised by high-quality materials and the logical layout of the functional elements. Foremost in the driver’s field of vision is a newly designed instrument cluster with large and easily legible dials and displays. All the controls are positioned logically in accordance with ergonomic principles – including, of course, the joystick-type shift /selector lever which is integrated in the instrument panel for particularly comfortable operation and to permit easy access to the side and rear. Numerous well thought-out stowage facilities provide handy accommodation for a mobile phone, drinks, the vehicle logbook, pens, documents and A 4 clipboards – all within easy reach of the driver.

In fact, we are confident you’ll find that the Vito surpasses your expectations, not least thanks to its passenger compartment which is packed with intelligent solutions.

Nothing but the best for your passengers Plenty of space, individual configuration possibilities, supportive seats and car-like ride comfort: these are the typical passenger requirements which a first class crewbus/minibus has to be able to satisfy these days. And the Vito certainly measures up on every count – especially with the optional rail system which allows the seats to be adjusted in very closely spaced (25 mm) steps. This offers a great of deal of flexibility with regard to the spacing and configuration of the seat rows which can even be arranged so that the passengers sit face-to-face during the journey. The same system allows the size of the luggage space to be adjusted as required. As for the seats themselves, you can choose between double and triple seating rows made up of comfortable individual seat elements which are available in standard or luxury form, the latter also being foldable and stowable in order to save space. For the triple seating row, an Easy-Entry function may be ordered for the seat nearest the sliding door.
From passenger vehicle to van in next to no time If you want to remove the seats entirely, you’ll find that the procedure is just as straightforward as that for reconfiguring their layout. Whether your Vito has the standard quick-release seat attachment system or the optional rail system, the seat rows can be removed quickly and without the need for any tools. The combination of the rail system and the luxury seats makes the conversion process particularly easy: all you have to do is place the seats in their stowed position, undo the quick-release lock and lift the seat row out of the rails – it’s as simple as that. As the three-point seat belts stay with the seats, there is no risk of them obstructing the cargo or being damaged by it.

Rear-wheel drive: proven to be the best Regardless of the engine version you choose, you’ll be impressed by the dynamic characteristics of the Vito. These are above all a consequence of the intelligent design concept, a key feature of which is the rear-wheel drive layout. This arrangement offers huge advantages for a van’s dynamic handling properties, manoeuvrability and safety. It keeps torque-steer effects to an absolute minimum and ensures that the handling always retains its forgiving character –

a particularly important safety factor when dealing with a permissible gross vehicle weight as high as 2.94 t, a towing capacity of up to 2.5 t and a maximum gross combination weight of up to 5.3 t. And rear-wheel drive also has a positive effect on the Vito’s turning circles: at just 11.80 m (short wheelbase) and 12.50 m (long wheelbase) they are reassuringly small. As well as enhancing handling, rear-wheel drive offers better climbing and traction characteristics than front-wheel drive because it is the driven rear
axle that takes the weight of the load. This characteristic is invaluable when moving off on a slope and when towing a trailer. The ideal combination of power and control In addition to the drive concept, the standard Electronic Stability Program ESP and the independent suspension also play a key role in the Vito’s safe handling characteristics. The impressive suspension comfort can be increased even further with the optional air suspension
at the rear axle: as well as providing optimum passenger comfort and load protection, this option includes an automatic level control feature which maintains the vehicle at a constant level regardless of the payload.

It’s something you’ll notice right from your very first drive, every time you accelerate out of a bend, move off from the traffic lights or join a motorway. Because it is precisely in the all-important low-rev range that the three powerplants offer a degree of pulling power which makes for an extremely engaging driving experience. All three units owe their high power output and impressive
torque curves, which peak at 330 Nm in the top-of-the-range powerplant, to the consistent use of the very latest engine architecture: second-generation common-rail direct-injection diesel technology, 4 valves per cylinder, a 1600 bar injection system and a turbocharger with a variable nozzle turbine*, to mention just a few of the many highlights. Good fuel economy figures (from just 6.7 litres per 100 km at a constant 90 km/h) complement the enhanced power and performance to complete the compelling overall impression created by these engines. A diesel particulate filter** is available as an option.

Safety: a key design principle The continuous growth in traffic levels both in urban areas and on motorways makes itself felt in every aspect of van operations and brings home the need for up-to-date safety equipment. As you would expect, this is another area where the Vito refuses to compromise. In fact, it makes the high safety standards of Mercedes-Benz passenger cars available to van users, too. The result: with its extensive safety features, which even include an advanced stability system, the Vito meets even the highest standards of active and passive safety.
Circuits that keep you on track The standard equipment of the Vito includes the Electronic Stability Program (ESP ) which also incorporates the anti-lock braking system (ABS) in combination with acceleration skid control (ASR), electronic brake force distribution (EBV) and the Brake Assist system (BAS). Together, these systems greatly improve directional stability and traction in critical situations. Take-back of end-of-life vehicles. Coming full circle At the end of its long life, you can return your Vito to us for environment-friendly disposal in accordance with the EU End-Of-Life Vehicle Directive. But that day lies a long way off. The take-back of end-of-life vehicles applies in accordance with national regulations to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes gross weight. The Vito meets the statutory regulations governing the suitability of the vehicle’s design for reuse and recycling. A network of vehicle take-back depots and dismantlers has been established which will process your vehicle in an environmentfriendly manner. The ways in which both vehicles and parts can be recovered are subject to ongoing development and improvement. Consequently, the Vito will be able to comply with any future increases in the recycling quota within the stipulated time limits. For further information, please call 00800 1777 7777.
