Dr. Behm 2015 CSEP/SCPE Honor Award (award text): Dr. Behm received his PhD in rehabilitation sciences from McGill in 1997 is MSc in human biodynamics from McMaster in 1990 and both a BE (1980) and a BPE (1979) from the University of Ottawa. Dr. Behm has held fulltime appointments at Memorial University’s School of Human Kinetics and Recreation since 1995 and is currently research professor. Throughout his career, Dr. Behm has been a leader in applied exercise physiology, especially in the areas of techniques for the measurement of muscle activation, instability resistance training, and stretching and their impact on health performance. This research has provided an important contribution to the neuromuscular literature and has been highly cited. He was one of the first to investigate instability resistance training providing comprehensive and balanced data. And, whereas static stretching can result in performance deficits, Dr. Behm and his colleagues were among the first to report the negative impact of static stretching on subsequent performance. His research has influenced both students and senior exercise scientist around the world. Dr. Behm has been very successful at funding his research through external granting agencies including CIHR and NSERC, as well as significant agency support for questions related to health and safety in harsh environments. He has published over 170 peer-reviewed papers in leading journals and led the development of two CSEP position stands: Resistance training and children and adolescents and The use of instability to train the core in athletic and nonathletic conditioning. He's currently leading the third: Acute effects of muscle stretching and physical performance, range of motion and injury incidents in healthy active individuals. His colleagues and mentors acknowledge his international impact and significant contribution to the field. Knowledge transfer is an integral component of the work of CSEP scientists. Dr. Behm has been an exceptional translator of scientific knowledge to the public with interfaces with mass media, conferences, social media and lay articles. His colleagues acknowledge that it is becoming more rare to find an applied physiologist who is able to translate the glamorous work of basic science and novel technique to those who will utilize the evidence in practice. Dr. Behm continues to contribute his expertise for interviews in print, on radio and online, including TedX and he recently contributed 13 videos to the CSEP online learning platform. Dr. Behm has been a dedicated member of CSEP for the past 30 years. He was certified with the first Standardized Test of Fitness Appraiser (STFA) CSEP certification in the early 80s, and Certified Fitness Appraiser (CFA), progressing through subsequent versions of the certifications leading to the current CSEP-CPT and CSEP-CEP. His volunteer contribution as a regional and committee chair to the development, enhancement and implementation of the program distinguishes Dr. Behm as a significant contributor, a ‘CSEP builder’, to the standards that underpin the CSEP Professional Standards ProgramTM today. In 2002, he organized and chaired to CSEP annual conference in St. John's, NL and was a member of the 2014 organizing committee. He has contributed on average one publication per year to CSEP scientific journals CJAP and APNM. Since 2013, Dr. Behm has been the chair of the CSEP Knowledge Translation Committee. The society’s quite unique duality is that it is both an academic society and also regarded as an authority on practice. Basic science is the glamorous work with novel technique development and hypothesis/question formulation. The translation of this research into position statements and doing the systematic work to justify them provide CSEP with recognition and prestige. Dr. Behm is an outstanding communicator who exemplifies the CSEP vision ‘to provide excellence in exercise physiology and health and fitness through research a best practice.’ Dr. David Behm, in recognition of your outstanding accomplishments and distinguished service, the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology is pleased to present you with its highest form of recognition the CSEP/SCPE Honor Award.
