ICO A meeting of the

WAO International Scientific Conference Asthma and Co-morbid Conditions: Expanding the Practice of Allergy for Optimal Patient Care

Welcome Letters Dear Colleagues, Welcome to Dubai and the World Allergy Organization’s 1st International Scientific Conference! The theme of this Conference, “Asthma and Co-morbid Conditions: Expanding the Practice of Allergy for Optimal Patient Care,” is one that, as President of the WAO, I have promised to promote through research and education. As a member of the worldwide specialty of allergy, asthma and clinical immunology, I would like to encourage a culture in which allergists/immunologists are first knowledgeable primary care physicians, internists, and pediatricians, and then specialists. Physicians trained in this way should be able to provide patients with more complete, cost-effective care for asthma and allied allergic and immunologic diseases. They should be able to diagnose and treat co-morbid conditions. Thus, the theme of this Conference is to capture and reflect this vision. Your participation in this inaugural event will help transform this vision of how we manage allergic diseases into everyday practice. I wish you a most successful Conference.

Richard F. Lockey President, World Allergy Organization (WAO) On behalf of the WAO Board of Directors

Dear Friends, We join Richard Lockey in warmly welcoming you to this meeting. It has been a most rewarding experience organizing this Conference and developing its scientific program. We are confident that as a participant your experience will be equally energizing for you. The scientific and educational program is designed to provide a forum for the latest research, reviews of current theory and practice, and importantly, “hands-on” problem-based learning. It is our hope, that as practitioners, educators, and researchers, you will take away from this Conference valuable insight into the most effective advances in the diagnosis and management of asthma and its comorbidities as well as broader aspects of related allergic disorders to meet the challenges of the global unmet needs in this area. We want to take this opportunity also to thank the exceptionally skilled and committed faculty who are a truly international and versatile group. A majority of the faculty is presenting more than once covering different session-types and several co-morbidities – demonstrating in this range the true meaning of the theme of this Conference: “Asthma and Co-morbid Conditions: Expanding the Practice of Allergy for Optimal Patient Care”. An equally important part of learning occurs outside the sessions when we have the important opportunity to meet up with colleagues to exchange ideas, make new connections and continue old conversations. We hope you will do plenty of all this. Please share with us your feedback and ideas so that we can continue to promote excellence in the field of allergy and asthma. Once again: Welcome! Sincerely,

Ruby Pawankar

WAO International Scientific Conference Asthma and Co-morbid Conditions: Expanding the Practice of Allergy for Optimal Patient Care

On behalf of the Dubai Health Authority, I would like to welcome you to the World Allergy Organisation’s (WAO’s) inaugural International Scientific Conference that is taking place in Dubai from the 5th to the 8th of December, 2010 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre As a strategic and principle health authority for the Emirate of Dubai, the DHA is responsible for securing and policing the very best healthcare standards in Dubai and is also responsible for developing the future direction of health policy here in Dubai. Hosting, attending and speaking at congresses such as this are an important part of our vision as we continue to develop healthcare policies that meet the requirements of our population, now and in the future. The Conference programme highlights a range of issues and areas of interests that will be explored over the next few days. This is reflected in the number of eminent healthcare professionals from around the world who will be joining and speaking at the Conference. This is a platform where international and local eminent speakers will get an opportunity to discuss and understand the latest in the diagnosis and management of asthma and its co-morbidities. The forum shall help healthcare professionals interact with colleagues, regional leaders and world experts in the field, thus updating their knowledge. With this, I wish you all the best and I hope you enjoy the Conference.

About WAO Cow’s Milk Allergy: “The evidence-based WAO global guidelines on the Diagnosis & Rationale for Action Against Cow’s Milk Allergy,” authored by the WAO Food Allergy Special Committee. (WAO Journal. 2010;3(4):57-161) Immunotherapy: “Sub-lingual Immunotherapy (SLIT) WAO Position Paper 2009.” SLIT is an exciting therapeutic strategy on the delivery of immunotherapy and is gradually being adopted by allergy communities throughout the world. Following a first meeting in Genoa in November 2008 to review experience of US trials of SLIT, WAO hosted a meeting in Paris in January 2009 to develop the first global consensus on SLIT. All WAO Regional & Affiliate Member Societies were invited to send representative delegates to this meeting and the majority were represented. They were joined by delegates representing non-member organizations including NIH, GA2LEN, EFA, ICPRG, and ARIA. A WAO Position Paper based on the Paris meeting was published in the WAO Journal, and in Allergy. (WAO Journal. 2009;2(11):223-281) The first State of World Allergy Report (SOWAR) appeared in the WAO Journal in June 2008. SOWAR stresses the importance of providing national allergy services for the burgeoning numbers of allergy patients in the world. This downloadable, on-line report is a useful resource for allergists and allergy societies wishing to make the case for improved local allergy service provision. Available at: www.waojournal.org. (WAO Journal. 2008;1(6):51-517) WAO Position Papers support and promote the specialty of allergy and help set standards for clinical practice and training: • “What is an allergist? A position statement of the WAO Specialty and Training Council.” 2008 Available at: www. waojournal.org • “Requirements for physician competencies in allergy: Key clinical competencies appropriate for the care of patients with allergic or immunologic diseases—a position statement of the World Allergy Organization.” 2008 Available at: www. waojournal.org • “Recommendations for competency in allergy training for undergraduates qualifying as medical practitioners – A position paper of the World Allergy Organization.” 2009 Available at: www.waojournal.org

WAO White Book on Allergy is being prepared for launch in 2011. The Executive Summary to the WAO White Book is being launched during the Conference in Dubai. The WAO White Book will be an important resource to help individual allergists and allergy/immunology societies promote allergic diseases as a major global public health issue.

WAO Member Society Surveys WAO’s federal structure provides a unique network to conduct effective global surveys about allergy and asthma. A number of projects have taken place over the last two years: • The WAO Specialty and Training Council conducted surveys on general/adult and pediatric clinical allergy services and training to obtain global information on current and future allergy service provision. • Building on the WAO’s 2007 international survey on the availability of epinephrine auto-injectors worldwide, in 2008 the WAO Special Committee on Anaphylaxis conducted a survey of Member Societies to gather data on how anaphylaxis is diagnosed and treated in healthcare settings in their respective countries. The combined results of these surveys will form the basis of the WAO international guidelines for the assessment and management of anaphylaxis, which was introduced at WAC 2009 and will launch in 2010. • The Asthma Special Committee conducted a survey of Member Societies to find out about the major allergens involved in exacerbations of severe and chronic asthma, and to learn whether national definitions of severe asthma exist. The information obtained will form a WAO educational program based on the 2009 World Health Organization’s definition of Severe Asthma. • The Drug Allergy Special Committee conducted a survey on in-vivo methods used in the diagnosis of allergic reactions to major drug classes. The information obtained will be the first step to reaching a global consensus about the best way to diagnose drug hypersensitivity reactions, and to sharing expertise on this clinical problem. • The Evidence Based Medicine and Methodology Special Committee developed a survey to establish allergists’ educational needs in evidence-based medicine.
