Welcome to Culture Night 2017 Bígí linn chun Oíche Chultúir a cheiliúiradh i mBaile Átha Cliath! Switch on Culture Night with venues and public spaces across Dublin as they open their doors to host a programme of free latenight entertainment, as part of an all-island celebration of arts, heritage and culture. Now in its thirteenth year, Culture Night Dublin returns in 2017 with its biggest programme to date. Over 270 venues are participating, with upwards of 600 events for locals and visitors to enjoy. Thanks to the combined efforts of Dublin City Council, The Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Creative Ireland, our valued partners and all the participating artists and organisations, Friday September 22nd will be a night to celebrate creative spirits and the hidden treasures that make Dublin so unique. Seek out the culture around every corner, as you chart your own path through the city’s different cultural quarters. Encounter show-stopping spectacle, learn about hidden histories, dabble in different workshops and embark on thrilling tours. Wherever your interests lie, the Culture Night programme has something to offer.
Museums, galleries and cultural attractions across Dublin are hosting their own exciting programmes, many including events created especially for Culture Night audiences. I’m especially delighted to see a number of venues open on Culture Night for the first time, including the Central Bank, the Irish Railway Records Society and D-Light Studios. The fun spills out onto the city streets, with a diverse outdoor programme bringing the magic of Culture Night to a number of public spaces. The Interactive Playground returns to Smithfield Square, with a focus on familyfriendly activities, while Meeting House Square, The Civic Amphitheatre and Barnardo Square play host to an eclectic line-up of live performances. Elsewhere, RTÉ and Creative Ireland join forces to present a spectacular open-air concert in the grounds of Dublin Castle, as well as a varied programme of talks, workshops and live radio broadcasts. If you’re undecided on what route to take on the night, why not embark on a Culture Night tour to help you get your bearings? There’s also the option of hitching a ride on one of the free Culture Night buses, kindly provided by Dublin Bus. As ever, it’s important to remember that most of the cultural organisations participating in Culture Night are open all-year round and we ask that you continue to generously support their invaluable work in breathing cultural life into the city. Cas air Oíche Chultúir. Switch on Culture Night. Ray Yeates Dublin City Arts Officer

The Sing Along Social is a zero-commitment choir hosted by Aoife McElwain, designed for people who can’t really sing. It’s for the singers who were told to mime in other choirs or kicked out of karaoke bars for being off key. You don’t need to practice. You don’t even need to know the words. It’s about caterwauling along to some gas songs in the company of friends and strangers. Good singers welcome, too.

The Comet was a brilliant satirical journal published on Dublin’s D’Olier Street in the early 1830s. The authors were a fearless set of young writers who heaped abuse on the government and established church. In the end, The Comet was closed down by the authorities, but not before it had lashed in prose and verse all those it saw as corrupt. Maurice Earls, an historian of the Dublin press, will give a free talk on The Comet at Books Upstairs bookshop at 6.30pm on Culture Night.
