The following activities have been designed for early childhood professionals to use as a starting point for developing children’s early literacy skills through play. Please feel free to adapt them for the home and with children of different ages. Don’t forget to record your own ideas, activities that worked really well, relevant songs and rhymes in the Notes section opposite. When reading the story you can:  Let the children hold their favourite toy.  Introduce new vocabulary by focussing on some of the key words such as yellow and raggedy, exaggerating those phrases.  After reading the story recount the descriptive phrases such as smells like a blanket. Guess My Friend  After reading the story encourage the children to use some words to describe their favourite toy giving clues such as: o What it feels like o What it smells like o What is sounds like Favourite Toy Poster  Create a poster or card featuring your child’s favourite toy.  Take a photo of the toys and stick to card.  The children can decorate the poster while an adult can scribe some key words around poster for example fluffy, cuddly.  Display the posters for the children to share.

Exploring Our World Favourite Toy Picnic  Have a favourite toy picnic.  The children can be involved in the planning by: o Deciding where to hold the picnic.

My Toy Feels Like...  Place two to three of the children’s toys in pillowcase and allow the children to feel around in pillowcase and see if they pick out their toy Smelling Table  Create a smelling table with various scents.  Use containers with holes in the lids.  Include scents such as vanilla, eucalyptus, fabric softener.  Ensure all lids are tightly secured so the children cannot open them Feely Box  Create a touchy feely box for the children to explore.  Fill the box with various materials such as faux furs, wool etc... Sound Table  Create a sound table with musical instruments

If your happy and you know it give your toy a cuddle. Play a game of Hokey Pokey. The children hold their favourite toys and include them in the actions.



Play a game of who is hiding under the rug. The children and their toy can hide together under the rug. Encourage the other children to use both the child and their toys name.
