The GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies / Leibniz-Institut für Globale und Regionale Studien is an independent social science research institute based in Hamburg. It analyses political, social, and economic developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, and links this knowledge to questions of global significance. It combines regionspecific analysis with innovative comparative research on accountability and participation, growth and development, peace and security, and power and ideas. The GIGA seeks to appoint a Research Fellow for work on a research project funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) on security sector reform in post-war societies (www.gigahamburg.de/en/project/security-sector-reform-and-the-stability-of-post-war-peace). The position is set to begin as soon as possible, preferably on 1 October 2017. It is a part-time (65%) position, limited to 19 months, and the salary is commensurate with 13 TV-AVH / TVöD. The goal of the project is to identify the conditions under which security sector reform (SSR) can lead to peace in post-war states. SSR refers to reform in the areas of the military, police, and justice system. The project uses a mixed-methods approach comprised of theoryforming case studies and theory-testing statistical analyses. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the project’s milestones in the area of statistical analysis of SSR in post-war states. This includes the collection of relevant data, and the further processing, analysis, and interpretation of data on the topic. Your qualifications: -

university degree (master’s or other graduate degree) in social or economic sciences with knowledge of quantitative social research and/or peace and conflict research very good statistical knowledge, particularly R and Stata familiarity with social science databases very strong teamwork skills and receptiveness to feedback very good presentation and communication skills good German- and English-language skills highly motivated, flexible, and able to work independently

Additional desired qualifications: -

experience with the creation of social science databases experience with cooperation with international partners readiness to prepare a doctoral project in the area of study publications in the area of peace and conflict research
