Aim and Objectives  To illustrate that effective communication for gender equality issues in

physical activity & sports will facilitate the attainment of sustainable development goals (SDGs) on gender equality for empowerment of women & girls in Africa. The main objectives or salient issues under investigations include: The approved 2030 SDGs with a focus on SDG 5 targets & issues; The social responsibility of the press in communicating gender equality issues in physical activity & sports public communications campaigns; The health benefits of gender equality issues in physical activity & sports awareness communication campaigns regardig women; and Present some of the social as well as developmental issues agreed in implementing the UN convention on elimination of all forms of discriminations against women (CEDAW) for women empowerment . 2° PASHDA 21-23 SEP.2016 KENYATTA UNIVERSITY NAIROBI - KENYA

Methods: In this review, we collated published evidence on gender equality and women empowerment in physical activity & sports for sustainable development, using relevant search terms with respect to the 2030 sustainable development goals (SDGs). SDG 5 targets, some other key gender policy documents were then obtained, reviewed, analysed, and summarised to inform this bulk of this paper presentation. 2° PASHDA 21-23 SEP.2016 KENYATTA UNIVERSITY NAIROBI - KENYA

Results: Gender

equality mainstreaming puts women & men on the same & equal participatory footing do well to harness the vital social, economic, ecological, & political inputs which spur sustainable development in Africa & globally. Theory plays a crucial role for any effective gender mainstreaming issues in physical activity and sports communication campaigns & campaigns evaluation for effectiveness of public policies; Public awareness based on ethical & gender equity considerations is vital for policy and decision- makers, campaign audiences, the campaign practitioners & the donors or development partners of African states; Evaluation of public communication campaigns is vital for better sports performance improvements, & for making better physical activity & sports policy investment decisions by the governments, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, physical activity & sports professionals, local communities, & donors. 2° PASHDA 21-23 SEP.2016 KENYATTA UNIVERSITY NAIROBI - KENYA

Conclusions: 









Mainstreaming gender equality and women empowerment will strengthen South-South and North-South partnerships for capacity building, networking, communication coordination, universal healthcare for wellbeing, & timely attainment of SDGs especially SDG 5; is imperative today. Sports communication campaigns could help to end all forms of discrimination against women and girls all over Africa. Women’s key roles in sports will help to eliminate gender based of violence against all women & girls in public and private spheres, like trafficking, sexual & other exploitation. Sports promote women (girls empowerment) advancements. Sports boost women’s reproductive & sexual health status. 2° PASHDA 21-23 SEP.2016 KENYATTA UNIVERSITY NAIROBI - KENYA

Lessons Learned Physical activities or sports based on gender parity promote equal socio- economic, environmental, or political benefits:  Lowers breast cancer risks by 20 percent  Eases natural child-birth (delivery) or labour  Lowers colon cancer risks by 50 percent  Prevents early death risks by 30 percent  Lowers risks of diabetes type 2 by 50 percent  Improves reproductive or sexual health status  Improves women‘s physical health status  Increases public respect or greater love for women  Reduces social exclusion as it promotes social inclusion 2° PASHDA 21-23 SEP.2016 KENYATTA UNIVERSITY NAIROBI - KENYA
