EL6013: Principles of Digital Communications, Modulation and Coding Professor: Sundeep Rangan Spring semester 2012. Wednesdays, 3 to 5:30pm, RH705 Overview: Introductory graduate‐level digital communication class including basics of modulation, detection, error rate calculations and a brief introduction to channel coding. Some review of probability and stochastic processes will be included. Prerequesites: Undergradudate probability. Graduate level probability, such as EL6303 or equivalent, can be taken concurrently. Text: Proakis, “Digital Communications,” 5th edition although earlier versions may be used. Grading: weekly homeworks, midterm and final. MATLAB assignments may also be added. Tentative syllabus: From Proakis: Chapter 2: Probability and Stochastic Processes (2 lectures) Chapter 4: Characterization of communication signals (3 lectures) Chapter 5: Optimum receivers in AWGN (3 lectures) Chapter 7: Channel capacity (2 lectures) Chapter 8: Block and convolutional codes (2 lectures)
