Elkhart to host Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge ELKHART (June 12, 2017) – Firefighters from across the country will compete this weekend at the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge hosted by the city of Elkhart. The event will take place on High St. in downtown Elkhart June 16-17 and will honor the 150th year of the Elkhart Fire Department. Opening ceremonies will begin Friday at 5:00 p.m. followed by a special “Guns N’ Hoses” challenge between members of the Elkhart Police and Fire Departments. The victors of this friendly competition will receive a trophy and unlimited bragging rights. Individual and team competitions will begin after the “Guns N’ Hoses” challenge. All competitors will be professional firefighters dressed in full gear. The course includes a linked series of tasks including climbing a five-story tower, hoisting, chopping and dragging hoses, and rescuing a lifesized, 175 pound “victim.” The course is designed to encourage health and wellness and allow the public an opportunity to see first-hand the daily rigors experienced by firefighters. To date, approximately 30 competitors from across Michiana and the country have registered. Anyone wishing to compete can register online through the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge website or in person the day of the event. The two-day, family-friendly event will be a regional qualifier for the national competition. In addition to the Firefighter Combat Challenge, the city will also host a Kid’s Firefighter Combat Challenge targeted at children age four to 11. This will allow kids to compete alongside their public safety heroes in a similar, but less demanding course. Registration is not required and there is no cost to participate. Primary sponsors for the Elkhart Firefighter Combat Challenge include Elkhart Brass and Griffen Plumbing and Heating. This event is also made possible through contributions by Columbia Southern University, Elkhart Indian Motorcycles, First Response Disaster Restoration Specialists, Formco Inc., Heartland RV, Homes for Heroes, Kevin Segner, Pac-Van, and Vala Marketing. Anyone interested in becoming a sponsor is encouraged to contact the Mayor’s Office or the Elkhart Fire Department. In addition to the American Red Cross, many of the sponsors will have booths set up during the event. Comfort Suites South in Elkhart is also offering a discounted rate for competitors and spectators. The Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge is open to the public and free to all spectators.
