Employment Opportunity Production Manager About The Space The Space is a unique commissioning and development organisation, which supports greater digital and broadcast access to arts and culture in the UK. We help arts and cultural organisations create a range of digital content from live event performance captures to short form marketing material, low-fi streaming to online curations, mobile apps and interactive projects. These commissioned works are published across a range of platforms including BBC TV, cinema and online channels including YouTube, Facebook and Instagram. Founded by the BBC and Arts Council England in 2013 as a Community Interest Company, our objectives are: to increase the audience reach and impact of publicly funded arts and culture through digital and broadcast technologies, to build digital skills and confidence across the arts sector and to support the development and creation of innovative new content using digital technology. We look to increase reach and engagement with artistic and cultural content that would be inaccessible for many people because of cost, disability, geography or other access reasons. We support UK arts and cultural organisations to reach new audiences who may not consume cultural content through traditional routes, including younger people and those from diverse backgrounds. Our approach is to support the creation, publication, distribution and syndication of the content we commission to the widest possible range of platforms and partnerships appropriate to the given work. This includes working with partners such as BBC TV and across digital platforms including for example YouTube, Instagram and Facebook. Our core delivery team is supported by a network of freelance associates, which allows us to provide a range of advice and expertise across the UK nations and regions. We have recently secured further investment from Arts Council England and the BBC and launched a new programme in April 2018, to support these objectives. This programme includes: •
Broadcast commissioning: a range of commissions comprising captures of live art performances or similar arts and cultural content, primarily for broadcast on BBC TV with additional digital distribution plans
1
•
Low-cost R&D commissions: approximately 20 commissions per year that serve as action research projects, reflect the diversity of contemporary England and give participants hands-on, practical experience of producing cultural content that engages audiences online or via other digital interactive experiences. Commissions may include: video ‘capture’ of existing live arts events and performances; enabling organisations to curate and publish previously recorded content; audience-facing experiments in new and evolving interactive content formats such as Virtual Reality or Augmented Reality
•
Training and skills development: designed to increase the arts and cultural sector’s skills and confidence to deliver broadcast and digital projects. Training will be delivered through workshops, online resources and one-to-one mentoring
•
Sector support initiatives: reducing barriers to producing digital creative projects and encouraging strategic collaboration in partnership with other arts and cultural support organisations
The Space will also be working with other organisations to develop and seek funding for programmes of activity that are complementary to these areas. We will also be developing additional services for the arts and cultural sector to access on a paid-for basis.
