How to use the FSET Prospectus Students must note that the FSET Prospectus consist of six parts. This Prospectus is the FSET Main Prospectus and contains material and information applicable to the whole faculty. Each school has however its own School Prospectus, that contains detailed information and specific requirements applicable to programmes that are offered by that school. Students must therefore read the FSET Main Prospectus and School/programme prospectus together. The FSET prospectuses should be read hand in hand with the WSU’s General Rules & Regulations, which is an important and valuable source of information. Students are encouraged to contact the Director of the School or the relevant HoD if they are not sure of a rule or an interpretation. Disclaimer Although the information contained in this Prospectus has been compiled as accurately as possible, WSU accepts no responsibility for any errors or omissions. WSU reserves the right to make any necessary alterations to this Prospectus as and when the need may arise. The Prospectus is only applicable for the 2014 academic year. A new prospectus will be published for the academic year 2015. Offering of programmes and/or courses not guaranteed Students should note that the offering of programmes and/or courses as described in this Prospectus are not guaranteed but may be subject to change. The offering of programmes and/or courses is dependent on viable student enrolment numbers being met (as determined by HOD) and physical and human resources being available.

MESSAGE OF WELCOME FROM DEAN OF FACULTY
It is my pleasure to welcome all students to Walter Sisulu University in general and specifically to the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology. The aim of the faculty is for all students to complete their studies successfully within the stipulated period, and to graduate with a qualification that meets their needs and those of society including industry and commerce. It is also a passion of FSET to inculcate skills that students will need in order to start their own businesses and establish themselves as service providers to society including industry and commerce. This prospectus aims to provide new and returning students with an understanding of the Faculty structure and the programmes offered by the various Schools. It is the aim of the faculty through this prospectus to guide students in the selection of the programmes they envisage to follow. However should students find it difficult to select a course using the prospectus, they are encouraged to approach the Director of the respective School for assistance. While academic work should be the cornerstone of a student’s focus there are however many other activities that students can engage in at university. During their spare time, students are encouraged to participate in activities that are offered by the various student societies. In addition, all student class representatives at the classes, Departments, Schools and the Faculty are encouraged to take their roles very seriously, attend all the scheduled meetings and participate in all the discussions for the benefit of the students they represent and for the benefit of both the Faculty and Walter Sisulu University. On behalf of all members of the Faculty staff I once again welcome all students. It is our hope that you will find your studies within the Faculty a stimulating and rewarding experience in 2014. 4. INTRODUCTION
4.1. Faculty Campuses and Delivery Sites The Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology (FSET) operates at Buffalo City (East London), Ibika (Butterworth) and Mthatha. The FSET has a student population of approximately 5,500 and a staff component of approximately 400. Plans to consolidate most of the FSET academic activities at a single location at Potsdam in East London are already underway.
4.2. Merger of three Faculties from legacy institutions The Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology emerged from the merger of the Faculties of Science Engineering and Technology from the former University of Transkei, Border Technikon and the Eastern Cape Technikon.
4.3. Three Tier Governance Structure The governance and leadership structure of the Faculty is a three tier structure comprising the Executive Dean, the School Directors and the Heads of the Departments. The Faculty has been stratified into five Schools: the School of Applied and Environmental Sciences, the School of Engineering, School of Computing, the School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences and the School of Technology. Each school is headed by an academic Director of School. 7
2014
PROSPECTUS
The Directors of Schools have the overall responsibility for the programs offered by the Schools. The departments concentrate on the management of academic courses and modules together with the learning, teaching and quality assurance thereof.
4.4. Comprehensive Nature of the Faculty In line with the shape of the university, the Faculty is a truly comprehensive provider, with a program and qualification mix that consists of undergraduate certificates, national diplomas, bachelors, honours, masters and doctors degrees, providing a suitable wealth of qualifications along the vertical perspective of the national qualifications framework. There are qualifications in the basic sciences of physics, chemistry, botany, zoology and mathematics, the applied sciences, pest management, chemical technology, statistics, applied mathematics, environmental sciences, geography, computer science, information technology, food and consumer sciences, fashion designing and fabric technology and fine arts. There are also qualifications in the engineering sciences of construction management and quantity surveying, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering. These provide an additional wealth of qualifications suitable for the mission and vision of Water Sisulu University along the horizontal perspective of the national qualifications framework.
5.
FACULTY VISION & MISSION
5.1. Vision of the Faculty The faculty will be a leading centre offering a suitable wealth of innovative programmes to produce suitably trained human capital and engage such human capital to create appropriate enterprises for sustainable development and eradication of poverty.
5.2. Mission of the Faculty In pursuit of its vision, the faculty will generate highly skilled graduates, innovative new products and knowledge through courses, programmes, community and research projects that are carefully designed for this purpose. The Faculty will actively engage many of these and other graduates in innovation, utilizing the envisaged WSU science and technology campus, commonly referred to as the TechnoPark, to generate marketable new knowledge and products and further incubate these to generate profitable SMMEs (Small, Micro and Medium Enterprises). Such SMMEs will in time migrate to the private sector and continue to grow creating many job opportunities and diffusing the new knowledge, products and technologies into that arena. In this way the faculty will gradually move away from the philosophy of focusing on the generation of only highly skilled graduates that are released as job seekers into the public and private sectors, towards the philosophy of generating small and medium micro-enterprises, and these will migrate into the private sector as job creators. Concomitantly the faculty will also maintain a high level of research unit productivity and therefore help to shift WSU from the traditional focus on the production of
MAIN FSET
8
highly skilled graduates to the proliferate production of new knowledge through research units. Of course the faculty will, as part of its commitment to the career needs of the communities and industries that it serves, continue its tradition of producing highly skilled graduates who will take up high level positions in the public and private sectors.

As provided for under the WSU 2014 General Prospectus rules (with specific reference to G8.1, G8.2. G9.1 & G9.2) the respective School/Programme Prospectuses set out minimum progression requirements for each programme in FSET. A student that progresses at a slower rate than that what is required for the specific programme will be refused further re-admission on the grounds of “poor academic performance”. Please consult the respective programme prospectus for details. Students who if registered would exceed the maximum duration of any programme will not be permitted to register for that or any other programme and will therefore be excluded from any programme on academic grounds.
7.5. Exit/Completion Rules Students should note that the respective School/Programme Prospectuses set out the detailed requirements that must be met for each programme in order to qualify for the awarding of the certificate, diploma or degree. The following additional requirements apply in general in addition to any programme requirements. a. Students must pass all modules and/or courses and satisfy all other requirements in order to qualify for the awarding of the certificate, diploma or degree. b. In addition to any other year level requirements, the minimum year level credits of the programme must be achieved or exceeded for each year level. c. In addition to any other year level requirements, the minimum credits of the entire programme must be achieved or exceeded.
