Welcome to the Collins ELT 2013 catalogue We’ve had another busy year here at Collins ELT, adding new titles to our ranges and seeing our work rewarded with two prizes: the David Riley Award for Innovation in Business English and ESP for our app Business Listening by Ian Badger (page 22) and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh English Language Book Award, awarded by the English-Speaking Union, for Collins COBUILD’s First English Words by Karen Jamieson (page 35).

David Riley Award for Innovation Winner

For 2013, I’m delighted to announce the acquisition of North Star ELT’s current publishing which will expand our list into new areas. Please see pages 4–7 for more details. We continue to be known for our innovative IELTS preparation materials. We move further up the chain in September with a new English for Academic Purposes series (page 22) which is designed to help all those successful IELTS and TOEFL students with their new degree courses in English. We hope that we will get a chance to meet you either in person or through our distribution network in 2013. Please do get in touch if you have any questions about our products or any suggestions for new ones. We are always happy to hear from you.

Clear usage: ‘really’ When Abie talks about Hong Kong, she says: ‘I really loved it,’ and ‘I really enjoyed it.’ We say really before a verb or an adverb or an adjective to emphasize it: Was Hong Kong big? It was really big. And was it expensive? Oh yes, it was really expensive. 3

How does Abie describe these parts of her childhood? What describing words [adjectives] does she use?

6

3

4

Listening tip: adjectives The usual position of adjectives is immediately before the noun. But many adjectives can go both before and after. It’s a big city. The city is big. Putting the adjective after the noun is a way of emphasizing its importance. Abie says ‘the weather was just beautiful’.

Gerunds and infinitives

Each unit introduces key vocabulary and grammar for the test

Study the explanations and examples in the chart. Make your own examples.

OVERVIEW

Biology Read the words, definitions, and examples. Use your dictionary to find additional word forms for each word.

A gerund is the -ing form of a verb. It can be used like a noun. Gerunds can be subjects, objects, or complements.

Reaching oil deposits under the sea is a complex and dangerous process.

A gerund can be a compound noun.

Offshore oil drilling can have environmental hazards as well as economic benefits.

A gerund can have an object.

Constructing offshore oil platforms on the ocean bed requires expensive equipment.

Two gerunds can be combined to form one subject.

Drilling and mining for oil is a multi-million dollar industry.

A gerund can be negative.

Not ensuring the highest safety standards can have enormous environmental consequences.

A gerund can be used as the subject in a that clause.

The professor claims that oil mining is less destructive than coal mining.

Use a gerund after prepositions.

The lecture supports the argument by giving two examples of the environmental effects.

Ex. by / a reason for / in favor of / against / instead of / because of / without

OVERVIEW Word

The lecture presents several reasons for developing deep-sea oil fields. The lecture states three reasons against using fossil fuels.

Infinitive clauses are used to show purpose (in order to).

The professor provides two examples to illustrate the dangers of nuclear energy.

The purpose clause can also start the sentence, followed by a comma.

To illustrate the dangers of nuclear energy, the professor provides two examples.

Infinitive clauses can modify abstract nouns. Ex. evidence, opportunity, attempt, chance, need

There is evidence to show that oil consumption is decreasing.

Infinitives can follow adjectives, especially those expressing an opinion.

It is important to remember that nuclear energy accidents can cause significant long-term

Other words with micro- are: microbiology, microorganism, microchip, microeconomics. Other words with -scope are: telescope,, stethoscope, periscope.

Extra Practice at the end of each unit ensures enough practice material is available

Extra Practice

Read the passage and make notes on the left below.

Complete the following paragraph with the gerund or infinitive form of the verb in parentheses.

Hydraulic fracturing (also known as fracking) is the process of drilling and injecting fluid into the ground at a high pressure in order to fracture shale rocks to release the natural gas inside. Although this method of extracting oil has been known since the 1940s, it is only recently that new technology has made it possible to extract this oil more cheaply and efficiently. Fracking offers an important new energy source at a time when traditional domestic supplies of coal and gas are diminishing. A new study concludes that the risk of contaminating water supplies is very low if fracking takes place at a depth of many hundreds of meters and the wells are properly constructed. Careful monitoring of chemicals in air and water would reduce any environmental hazards. Now listen to part of a lecture in an environmental science class and make notes on the right below. Then answer the question. Write your answer in 150 words.

What is research? Glossary subject discipline = In an academic setting, a subject discipline is a particular topic or specific area of study.

In simple terms, when you do research, you are looking for information in order to answer a question. In academic settings, research can take many different forms depending on the subject discipline and the kind of question you want to answer. If you are studying a scientific subject, your research may take the form of an experiment to answer a question which begins with the phrase: ‘What will happen if…?’ if you are studying a social science, your research may take the form of a survey of a group of people’s thoughts, feelings or experiences. In any case, no matter what your subject discipline, at some point you will have to do some research which involves investigating what other scholars have said about the topic you are interested in. In other words, you will have to do some ‘library based’ research.

1 Getting started

Why do you have to do library based research? Glossary disseminate = To disseminate information or knowledge means to distribute it so that it reaches many people or organizations.

Exercises help students get ready for successful independent academic study

Academic requirements are explained in clear language to help students understand what is expected of them

When you do library based research, you usually have to work on your own. This gives you the opportunity to become a more independent learner and to show that you can think for yourself. These are qualities that are highly valued in academic settings within the English speaking world. However, working independently does not mean that your research is not connected to the work of other people. One of the main purposes of universities is to produce knowledge, that is, to create, evaluate and disseminate new information and ideas. Producing knowledge usually involves many scholars working in different times and places. When you do research as part of your course, you are learning skills which will allow you to participate in that wider effort. You have the opportunity to develop the ability to: ■

Create a research question and an argument to answer it Evaluate the research that has been done by others – that is, to consider it carefully and make judgements about it Disseminate your research by writing it up and submitting it for a mark, and, in some cases, by sharing what you have learned with other students on your course

How do you know if your research is good? H In some parts of the world, students are judged according to how well they retain information given to them. In the English speaking world, when your research paper is being marked, the marker will normally use other criteria for judging how well you have demonstrated the skills involved.

Exercise 1 Imagine you have 30 days to write a 3,000-word research essay on a research topic related to your course. The tasks you might do are listed in the table below. Tick the tasks that you think are important. For each task you have ticked, write approximately how much time you think it would be reasonable to spend on that task. Stage

These are the questions the marker may ask themselves: 1

Has the student created a worthwhile research question (or interpreted the set research question in an interesting way)?

Find out what information is available – do some preliminary background reading

2

How well does the student know what other scholars have written about the topic?

Devise an rough outline plan

Think carefully about your question and why it is worth asking. This will help you choose worthwhile focus for your paper. Do preliminary background reading. If you discover that there isn’t enough information available to support your approach, you can choose another focus without having wasted too much time. Write a rough outline plan before you start reading and taking you notes. This will help you read efficiently and with a clear purpose.

Dealing with last-minute problems

Briefing At the end of a negotiation you have reached agreement in principle. What do you do if a problem arises? How do you deal with it? There are a number of solutions. If you wish to look for a compromise, there are a number of things you can do:

• Emphasize the benefits of the collaboration. • Encourage and applaud any constructive proposal by the other side.

12

• Say that you are looking for a solution that is acceptable to both sides.

Closing the negotiation

• Give the other side an escape route, a way to avoid any difficulty.

Communication skills are clearly presented and illustrated with a recording

The language of closure How to deal with ‘difficult’ customers

Above all, don’t allow a last-minute problem in the negotiation to affect your attitude. Be polite and positive at all times. Try these tactics:

• Praise the other side. • Emphasize mutual benefit. • Emphasize common ground. • Remain polite but persistent. • Ask why the other side has a problem. • Agree on a date to review concessions.

How to deal with last-minute problems

• If the other side walks out, contact them IMMEDIATELY.

How to write a letter of intent

• Agree a date for future talks.

2 LISTENING

Becoming a better listener The key to becoming a better listener is attitude. We need to believe that other people are really worth listening to, and that it is important to give others the chance to express themselves. We need to believe that it is useful to engage with others, and that both speaker and listener can learn and benefit from dialogue. Otherwise there is little chance of developing good listening skills. Let us look at 11 principles of effective listening:

1 Empty your mind of your own thoughts when the other person begins to speak

Mark Twain, American author and humorist (1835–1910)

Make yourself concentrate fully on what is being said. Focus on hearing interesting and important information. Try to discover the different levels of meaning in the message: move from the information on the surface to considering the feelings, attitudes and needs of the speaker. Respect what is said and see this as an opportunity to learn something new about the person.

If we were supposed to talk more than listen, we would have two tongues and one ear.

2 Support the start of a conversation by encouraging others to talk

Listening is the foundation of effective communication. As children, we learn to listen before we can speak, read or write. But many professional people have rather poor listening skills. They sometimes find it difficult to concentrate on what the other person is saying. Perhaps they have little real interest in the other person’s ideas. Often they are impatient to start talking themselves and give their own point of view. Whatever the reason, this lack of listening leads to misunderstanding, conflict and inefficiency in the workplace.

Do this by asking questions, as this creates golden opportunities for listening. You can tailor the kind of question you ask to your listening objective. For example, do you want to get information, assess the competence or mentality of the speaker, or build rapport?

3 Give others time to say what they want to say Remember that it often takes longer to get ideas across in a foreign language: words have to be remembered, and sentences have to be formed. Try to become comfortable with the silence that others may need in order to formulate their ideas.

In this unit we look at the nature and purpose of listening, and at how to become a more effective listener. Before you read on, think about these questions:

Q

1 Why should we listen to other people? 2 What kind of listener are you?

4 Respond to what is said

3 What stops us from listening effectively?

When we listen, we need to make two basic types of response. re We need to show | Listening what 2has been said (I understand); that we understandUNIT d and a that we value what Otherwise, speakers may has been said (I think this is important because ...). Othe become confused or unwilling to go on talking to us.

Analysing the money or personal finance section

How to read the money section The money section of newspapers or media websites provides financial advice about the most effective ways to invest capital.

• Scan over the headlines of the money section to find an article of interest and then read extensively for general understanding, taking particular note of any financial data provided.

UNIT 17 | Analysing the money or personal finance section

• Remember that advice given is not necessarily true and is simply the opinion of one (or more) financial adviser(s). And predictions about future happenings are merely informed guesses and tend to have a poor track record.

• When you are skimming through a money article, use the clues in the text to help you to follow the gist of what is being said. Subheadings serve as useful summaries of each section, for example: ‘The basics’, ‘Shares’, and ‘Conclusion’. The opening sentence of a paragraph (known as the topic sentence) often summarizes the rest of the paragraph, for example: ‘But the tax breaks available for those who can make this lifestyle choice are considerable.’ (lines 33–35). Questions posed at the beginning of a paragraph are usually answered within the paragraph, for example: ‘Want to get by on dividends alone?’ (line 19).

)@4(92(;/,9;65

INVESTMENTS Record dividends mean it is possible to lie back and watch the money roll in, says Mark Atherton.

Getting started

A bumper year for share dividends lies ahead, despite a looming recession. These distributions, made by companies to their shareholders, reached a record £67.8 billion last year. A further increase is forecast for this year, as companies return rising profits to investors. This may be good news for pension funds and individuals reliant on dividends for income, especially as once a company has raised its payout, a future cut is unlikely. But there is sure to be more criticism of this use of company funds, especially in difficult economic times.

Read the opening paragraph of the article on the opposite page and skim through the rest of the article in just two minutes. Then choose the best headline for this story.

THE BASICS Want to get by on dividends alone? Then you need a substantial capital sum. You would, for example, require £650,000 to achieve an income of £26,000, equivalent to UK average earnings. This is based on the current yield of four per cent from shares in the FTSE100 index. Jonathon Jackson of Killik & Co., the stockbroker, says: ‘In practice you would require more than this and you would need a cash buffer to smooth over irregular dividend payments.’ But the tax breaks available for those who can make this lifestyle

choice are considerable. Chas RoyChowdhury of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants says a worker on £26,000 would pay £3,705 in tax and £2,276 in national insurance – £5,981 in total. The effective tax on dividends of £26,000 would be zero, with no national insurance to pay. You should, of course, remember that some banks abruptly stopped paying dividends after the credit crunch of 2008-9 and BP suspended its dividend. SHARES Jeremy Batstone-Carr, of Charles Stanley, the stockbroker, says that you would need to spend your £650,000 across at least 20 stocks to limit your risk. Mr Jackson suggests you look for ‘international high-yielding stocks with strong balance sheets that look capable of sustaining good dividend payments’. To guard against excessive concentration, Mr Jackson thinks you should add stocks with more modest yields but good prospects of rapid dividend growth. CONCLUSION With cash deposit rates low and share yields high, investing for dividends makes a lot of financial sense – if you have the money. You may think that living off your investments is not for you, but remember that that is exactly what you, and everyone else, will effectively be doing in your retirement.

About Collins What does COBUILD mean? Collins and the University of Birmingham, led by the pioneering linguist John Sinclair, developed an electronic corpus in the 1980s, called the Collins Birmingham University International Language Database (COBUILD). This corpus is a collection of English as it is spoken and written around the world. It is now the largest collection of English data in the world. The COBUILD project revolutionized dictionaries for learners because it allowed for a new generation of language reference materials that were based on actual evidence of how English was used, rather than lexicographer intuition. The Corpus is at the heart of Collins’ English Language Teaching publishing, and Collins editors and lexicographers use Corpus data to ensure that the English used in our books is the English that’s really spoken and written around the world. That’s why you can see the COBUILD logo on most of our English Language Teaching titles.

Collins is part of HarperCollins Publishers. Please find below a selection of products available from other parts of our division.
