ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT
Pipelife Norway is Norway's largest producer and supplier of plastic pipe systems. The Pipelife Group is one of Europe's leading manufacturers of plastic pipes and associated parts. Our plastic pipe systems are used for water, sewage, gas, cable protection and electrical installations. The Pipelife Group operates in 26 countries, with 2680 employees, and annual sales totalling 880 million euros. Pipelife Norway AS has factories in Stathelle and Surnadal, as well as sales offices in Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim. The company has 170 employees, with its head office in Surnadal and a yearly turnover of more than 1 billion NOK. The factory in Surnadal produces pipes and fittings in PVC, PP and PE, mainly supplying the Norwegian market. The factory at Stathelle produces pipes and fittings in PE, over half of which are exported. Our speciality is pipes in large dimensions, and special parts tailored to customer requirements. The pipes are extruded directly into the sea, where they are connected to tugboats to be transported to the customer.
Environmentally friendly and sustainable For Pipelife, the protection of the environment is a cornerstone of our business. “The right pipes protect the environment” Pipelife as a company, and each of its individual employees are concerned with ensuring that our work is sustainable, and does not damage the environment. The steps that Pipelife has taken to ensure that we are an environmentally aware company continue to be integral to our market position. Furthermore, ensuring that the company is run in a sustainable way increases its overall value. It is important that we set ambitious targets for improvement in health, safety and the working environment. Focus and commitment to Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) will result in fewer injuries, and therefore fewer absences. Fewer injuries and absences lead to economic benefits, as they directly result in reduced costs. Furthermore, creating a safe working environment will improve the quality of the company overall. Pipelife Norway AS considers its contribution to a more sustainable nutritional business to be of great importance. Our products enable the provision of real necessities, for example pipes for the supply of clean drinking water, the collection and transportation of waste water, the transportation of gas, and the protection of cables and electrical installations. We ensure that our products are of high quality, and are long-lasting. To ensure that our production processes are environmentally friendly, we pay close attention to consumption, waste reduction and the reduction of transport emissions. 2 2

Environmental aspects at Pipelife Norway AS Pipelife Norway AS produces plastic pipes and fittings in PVC, PP and PE in the Surnadal factory. The factory at Stathelle produces pipes and fittings in PE, more than half of which are exported. None of our products require special discharge permits in relation to the Pollution Law. A goal that we continue to work towards is the reduction of the environmental impact caused by the activities of Pipelife Norway AS. This applies mainly to the following: •
Consumption of resources such as energy and water
•
Selection of raw materials and production processes
•
Material balance
•
Emissions into air, water, soil - mainly waste
•
Transportation of goods
Actions Consumption of resources such as energy and water: • • •
Assessing potential power consumption from investments in equipment and machinery Product development and control with regard to the use of materials and packaging Increasing employee awareness to ensure that energy use is more efficient and demand-controlled
Selection of raw materials and processes • •
4
Procuring production equipment with environmental aspects in mind Changing raw materials from PE80 to PE100 on all coil products, reducing transportation of recyclable material

Material Balance The material loss is kept at the lowest possible level by: • • •
Optimizing production parametres to avoid overweight Reducing scrap Reducing waste
•
Granulating and recycling product waste as much as possible Optimizing production equpment L6S project – Recycling PE from Robust Line (PE pipes with PP robe) Planning production in order to optimize batch sizes and series
• • •
Emissions into air, water, soil- mainly waste • • •
L6S project – Implementing new procedures to prevent plastic particles from falling into the sea Complying with the REACH directive regarding chemical handling Improving processes for handling plastic waste (start-up and shut-down scrap)
Transportation of goods The volume of transport used by Pipelife Norway AS has increased in recent years. Despite this increase, emissions from several pollutants related to road traffic have been reduced. Our raw materials, semifinished, and finished goods are mainly delivered by road train. In addition, tugs are used to transport long length PE pipes from the factory in Stathelle. As of 2015, we have started to transport some raw materials by boat, rather than by car. Pipelife Norway now delivers an increased volume of products directly to construction sites. This causes a negative development for our targets on emissions related to transportation, but provides a significant improvement in CO2 emissions of the supply chain in total. This is a development that we also want to continue with in the future despite a negative development in our key figures. Pipelife will be among the first to use new technology for transportation of goods. Pipelife Norway AS is actively working to reduce the environmental impact caused by transportation by: • • • • • • •
Establishing transport agreements with requirements for the use of environmentally friendly vehicles and environmental reporting Ensuring that our main transport supplier is environmentally certified in accordance with ISO 14001 Working closely with our carriers to ensure maximum fill rate and utilization of transport fleet Customizing the road train to ensure optimum space utilization, thereby reducing the number of units being used Seeking to use longer road trains, where road standard and consession allows, in order to reduce the number of loads Using boat transport where economically and environmentally appropriate Delivering directly to construction sites and coordinating and cooperating with wholesalers to reduce amount of transportation
•
Telescoping of PE-pipes in long lengths, ongoing project to make this possible
•
Telescoping of PE-pipes in short lengths in container, improved securing of pipes to make this possible
