Information More information about the Chaos Space Marines For more information into the background of the Chaos Space Marines please visit Games Workshops website.
Thank you A big thank you has to go to the EPIC UK committee; without their enthusiasm, for a game that they love, this army book wouldn’t be a reality. The wish and will to improve a fantastic tournament war-game, within the UK, has been their only payment. A big thank you also has to go to Games Workshop; without their imagination, creativeness and support this game would not be around today. A special thank you has to go to Jervis Johnson and all the Fanatic team, both past and present. Also a big thank you has to go to all the independent EPIC developers, especially the army developers on the Tactical Command internet forum. Without their ideas some of the developments within the book wouldn’t have been a reality.

Black Legion Chaos Space Marines

Black Legion Chaos Space Marines Special Rules Factions Each formation in a Black Legion army is part of a faction that owes allegiance to either one of the gods of Chaos or to Chaos Undivided. The player must decided which faction each formation belongs to when selecting their list and the choice must be noted on any army roster produced. With the exception of Chaos undivided, the different factions have millennia old hatred for each other and this is represented by the following rules: Formations belonging to Khorne hate Slaanesh formations and vice-versa. Formations belonging to Nurgle hate Tzeentch formations and vice-versa. A formation that has no units from a hated formation within 30cms gains a +1 modifier to all its Initiative tests. This modifier only applies to formations that are on the battlefield, aircraft, spaceships or other formations off table never benefit from this bonus.
Summoned Units Formations that purchase the upgrade “Daemonic Pact”, or units with this ability, allow the player to summon daemons to the battlefield. To summon Daemons the player must also purchase a Daemonic pool from which to summon. This pool contains two sections, one for lesser daemons and one for greater daemons and is not faction specific. The size of such pools must be visible to all players at all times and it is suggested that either tokens or dice are used to indicate the size of each pool available. As daemons are summoned the pool must be changed to reflect its current size. To summon daemons the formation declares its intention to summon before any action roll is made. The player then rolls 2D3 to generate the number of summoning points available for this formation. The number of points required to summon each type of daemonic unit will be noted on its data sheet. The formation may then summon daemons up to the number of summoning points generated, with any points not used lost, up to the number of points left in the daemonic pool. The faction of the summoning formation determines what type of daemons may be summoned as below: Khorne Bloodthirster, Bloodletters Nurgle Great Unclean One, Plaugebearers Slaanesh Keeper of Secrets, Daemonettes Tzeentch Lord of Change, Flamers Any Faction Daemonic Beasts. Players may only have one greater daemon for a given faction on the table at any given time. Summoned units must be setup with their base within 5cms of any none-summoned unit in the summoning formation (i.e. You cannot place a chain of summoned units). They cannot be placed in enemy zones of control or impassable terrain. Summoned units become part of the summoning formation for all rules purposes as long as they remain on the battlefield. Summoned units do not cause blast markers to placed on the formation when they are destroyed, however daemonic units killed in an assault to count towards the number of units killed when calculating the modifiers for assault resolution. Summoned units that are destroyed are removed from play and the summoning cost of each unit is lost from the players daemonic pool. Summoned units remain in play until the end phase of the turn in which they were summoned. After all formations have attempted to rally any summoned units are removed from play and the total of their summoning points returned to the relevant daemonic pool. Note – this may cause the formation to now have more blast markers than its number of units an will therefore become broken. Greater Daemons returned to the daemonic pool keep any damage points taken and do not heal these points while off board. When summoned subsequently they maintain this damage points. When a formation becomes broken all summoned units are destroyed.
5
When calculation victory points at the end of a GT scenario game use the following rules. For lesser daemon pools score half points if the pool is less than or equal to 50% and full points if the pool is at 25% strength or less. Treat Greater Daemons as war engines for purpose of victory points.
Favour of the Gods The powers of Chaos are quick to both reward and punish. To reflect this in the strategy phase of each turn if the player rolls a 6 they are rewarded with a bonus of 1D3 summoning points to add to any daemonic pool, however, if the player rolls a 1 then they lose 1D3 summoning points from any daemonic pool. If the player never purchased a pool, or all pools are at zero points there is no effect.
Augmented Summoning Some units have the ability Augment Summoning. Units with this ability allow extra dice to the throwing when summoning daemons. For example, a unit with Augment Summoning (+2D3) would allow a formation to roll 4D3 for summoning points as opposed to the normal 2D3.
Daemonic Focus Certain units are denoted as having the ability “Daemonic Focus”. Any formation with a unit with this ability may elect to keep any or all summoned units in play in the end phase. Broken formations may not use this ability as any daemons summoned by this formation are lost when the formation becomes broken.
Lord Upgrades Lord characters may only be added to core units within the formation they belong to. They may not be added to any upgrade units purchased for the faction.
Dreadclaws Dreadclaws allow chaos formation to enter play using the Planetfall rules with one exception. Dreadclaws never roll for random deviation once their entry point has been determined. They may not be placed in impassable terrain or enemy zones of control. The following units may be transported in Dreadclaws :- Bezerkers, Chaos Dreadnoughts, Emperors Children Havocs, Havocs, Noise Marines, Plague Marines, Chaos Space Marines and Thousand Sons.

Black Legion Allies Chaos Titan Legion Special Rules Void Shields Chaos titans are protected by void shield generators. The number of void shields each titan has is noted on the titan’s datasheet. Each void shield will automatically stop one point of damage and then go down. Do not make armour saves for damage stopped by void shields, nor allocate Blast markers. Once all of the shields have been knocked down, the titan may be damaged normally and you may make saving throws against any hits that are scored. Hits from close combat ignore void shields but units using their firefight values must first knock down any shields before they can damage the titan. Void shields that have been knocked down can be repaired. Each titan can repair one downed void shield in the end phase of each turn. In addition, if a titan regroups it can use the dice roll to either repair the void shield or remove Blast markers (e.g. if you rolled a 2 you could repair 2 shields, remove 2 blast makers, or repair 1 shield and remove 1 Blast marker).

Death Guard Special Rules Infestation Formations solely made up of units with infestation use the following rules. The formation must be held in reserve and will deploy using the rules for teleportation from the core Epic Armageddon rule book, with the following amendment. Place a single unit anywhere on the battlefield. Roll the number of dice indicated in the formations listing and place the resulting number of units in formation with the first unit placed. Now roll for blast markers as per the teleportation rules. Formations containing units with infestation may only contest objectives in the GT scenario. Summoned Units See Page 5.

Epic-UK Codex Chaos Space Marine - How, What and Why. Chaos Space Marines After completing updates and new lists for all the races included in the original EA rulebook we then decided to move on to the other races that have official GW army lists published. To keep with our good/evil pattern we opted to develop Chaos rather than Eldar. We then had to consider which Chaos lists we should cover. In the end we settled upon updating the Black Legion Chaos Marine list and developing new lists for the most iconic Chaos Marine legions - the Emperors Children, World Eaters, Death Guard and Thousand Sons. It was decided that 'mortal' Chaos armies such as the Lost and the Damned and other factions would be developed at a future time. Black Legion Since the Black Legion list was published several years ago it has proved a popular tournament list. While we believed that there is little wrong with the army, and its strength in particular, we realised there were a number of contentious areas and units that needed to be addressed. The army builds that allow up to 5 fast, fearless War engines have proved strong in tournaments, perhaps overly so, so we decided to remove the assault company and place the Death Wheel in the titans allocation. The Decimator was left in the main body of the list as it was felt that it would always be an inferior choice if placed in the titan section. Other areas which we immediately addressed were the feral titan which has proved overly strong. We removed the MW from its main weapon. It was decided to remove MW rather than IC so it could still fulfil its main role as an infantry killer. After testing we realised that it was now not a better choice than the Death Wheel so we reduced the cost to 275 to match the Wheel. The Daemon Prince was also toned down with the removal of its TK attack. The third contentious unit was the Obliterator. Though reports of its strength have not necessarily been born out in tournament play, we decided to reduce its AA slightly and also increase it cost slightly . The inclusion of an AA tank was discussed but rejected as too big a change. In order to remove the o-x limits that were in the list we adopted a core/elite/support structure which allowed us to remove these. In a similar vein the costs of the raptor and terminator formations were tweaked to reflect the cost of a character in the price. With the main issues with the list addressed we then turned to slightly changing stats or costs of units that were ubiquitous or rarely used. The plaguebearer which has proved the default daemon selection was toned down in its FF so it was more of a meat shield rather than an all-purpose unit. On the rarely used side the main weapon of the Ravager was given D3 to its TK weapon to give it a light WE hunter role. The greater daemon was reduced in points - though we decided to keep the summoning points the same so as not to affect future Chaos lists. The whole summoning system was looked at but we decided that the present system worked well enough. The Swiftdeath fighter was renamed and rearmed to Helblade to reflect the Forgeworld model and the Helltalon was reduced in cost to make it a more viable selection. The inclusion of the Harbinger super heavy bomber was discussed but rejected as being an unnecessary addition to the list. Finally some units were changed in name or stats to reflect the current 40k names and roles - the forlorn hope scout formation was renamed Chosen and the Chosen were changed to Chaos Terminators. The Defiler was restated with the barrage weapon removed and the speed altered (with infiltrate added) to make it more of an assault unit rather than an artillery platform. Finally we changed the dreadclaw so it more closely represented the abilities of a dreadclaw rather than a marine drop pod.
55
CULT LISTS After deciding to produce variant Chaos lists for the Cult Legions our initial discussion was how they should be represented. In the end we agreed to keep them fearless, allowing them to match the Black Legion stats. However it was decided to limit the fearless to core infantry and daemonic units. If this proved a problem in testing then things could be altered. As it was the fearless units didn't prove detrimental in either game play or game enjoyment so we stuck to that path. Through all the lists our basic process was to strip out the Black legion specific units and add units that were necessary for the new lists - often including daemon engines from the Lost and the damned. A great deal of discussion took place over what the initiative should be for the lists, 2+ to represent their disorganisation, 2+ but with a modifier if they did what they were supposed to do i.e. world eaters assaulting and other ideas were discussed. However in the end we went for 1+ but with daemon engines at 2+ to represent their barely controlled nature and also to enable us to keep costs in line with the Lost and the damned. DEATH GUARD For the Death Guard we wanted to theme them as slow but tough with decent shooting ability. To this end we removed the Rhinos, dreadclaws and bikes to limit their speed. Terminators, the Daemon Prince and the characters were again tweaked to follow the theme of the list. Plague marines were used as the core choice - using their sacred number. Contagion engines and Plague towers were added as a choice - as well as the, easily converted, Plaguereaper Super-heavy tank. Also from the Lost and the damned list Plague Zombies were added initially as a widely used upgrade but then just as a formation choice. With drop pods not an option the Plagueship was introduced to replace the standard Chaos ships. We replaced the Black Legion titans with Nurgle versions again keeping to our general list themes. We also again decided to use the Defiler as a AA unit. As with the other lists Chaos Space Marines were added as an option to boost activation numbers. EMPERORS CHILDREN For the Emperors Children we wanted to create a list that reflected their themes of movement, noise and disorientation. Therefore many of the new units have disrupt or first strike representing this. We decided on a basic retinue of six noise marines- Slaanesh sacred number, and retained the support formations of bikes, terminators and armour though altered some of the stats. To this we added the Knight and Daemon engines from the Lost and the damned, with these added we also decided not to introduce a Warhound variant as the roles would overlap. Chaos Space Marines were added to boost activation count and represent recently turned or not fully corrupted Marines depending on your fluff viewpoint. With the basic structure done we looked at AA, we decided to restrict obliterators to the Black Legion so added a defiler variant whose focus is AA. To replace daemonic beasts we added Daemonettes on steeds and, as the Black Legion titans are Khornate, we added titans that were more in keeping with the themes of the list. THOUSAND SONS With the Thousand Sons we wanted to keep with their characteristics of automatons mixed with magical and daemonic powers and weaponry. For the core we used the Thousand Sons marines - but we decided against a formation size of 9 as it would make it very difficult to price them properly and maintain a competitive activation count. We did however include the option of upgrading the formation to the sacred number if a player wanted to. With the Legion being automatons lead by Sorcerers we decided to make the Character unit of the basic retinue different to the automaton troops. Therefore we created the Cabal of Sorcerers, to these we added the daemonic pact ability to reflect their Sorcerous power and to make it very much in the
56
Thousand Sons players interests not to get broken. Terminators, and also the Daemon Prince, were changed to represent the Legions nature and Disc Riders replaced bikes. We retained a more standard character structure for these other formations - they are lead by a single Sorcerer rather than a Cabal. The Defiler was again used as the AA unit with Daemonic Planes replacing the more standard planes. Chaos Space Marines were not added in this case as they didn't fit with the Thousand Sons background - for this reason dreadclaws were also removed. More Thousand Sons themed titans replaced the Black Legion units and the Screamer was introduced as a 'fast' daemon option. WORLD EATERS For the World Eaters we wanted to make them a very close combat orientated army. The Cult marines were again made the core choice in their sacred number with terminators, bikes and characters all tweaked with CC improved and FF downgraded. Daemon engines and the Lord of Battles were added with a slight boost in initiative for assaulting. The feral was removed in favour of the Lord of Battles. As in the other lists Chaos Space Marines were added. We found that the standard Chaos cruisers didn't really work with the World Eaters so we replaced them with the Styx and its increased drop capacity. Other Khornate units were also added - juggernauts and fleshounds, in keeping with the CC theme. For AA we decided to stick with just planes as using a Khornate Defiler in a defensive AA role didn't seem appropriate, this also allowed us to keep the defiler assault orientated. Conclusion Well that’s about all we have for this codex. Thanks for reading and I hope you all enjoy using the lists.
