4. Reading A
Read the article. Put the missing extracts (A–K) into the correct place. Inspirational destinations by Julia Waterman
One of the great joys of being a travel writer is that I get paid for doing what I love most, namely travelling. When I was asked to contribute an article to this series on inspirational places, (0) A that I would describe Uluru or Ayers Rock, deep in the Australian outback; an iconic place and now a World Heritage Site, (1) .... . To learn as much as I could about the area, (2) .... . The tour started at Alice Springs, the nearest town, which was over 300 kilometres away − the sheer size of the continent is hard to imagine for someone who has grown up on a crowded island. A disparate group of individuals, we met in the town centre and waited for our guide to appear. The bus was laden down with enough food for five days, (3) .... . I have always loved travelling by road, but (4) .... . The sands were every shade of red and orange and gold. The skies were of the deepest blue, cloudless and brutal, and the sun beat down without respite. Many hours later we reached our camping destination. A big camp fire was lit and (5) .... . The tents were put up and the swags* unrolled. Who would sleep outside under the stars? How could you not? Lying in my swag, looking up at the countless millions of stars, I felt the great power of our universe and our tiny place in it. (6) .... . An early start was necessary to see Ayers Rock at dawn when it shimmers in the sunlight. From a distance you are not aware of the size of this majestic natural rock formation, (7) .... . Sacred to the Aboriginal Anangu people, Uluru is 348 metres high and has a circumference of 9.4 kilometres. Although you can walk up the rockface to the top, the Anangu prefer it if tourists don’t do so, as a sign of respect for their beliefs. (8) .... , though we observed many people making their way up the well-worn track – not for the faint-hearted. As we learned, there have been over 30 deaths on that route and when the winds are very high the paths are closed. Having read about the Aboriginal dreamtime legends (9) .... , I was struck by the beauty and simplicity of these stories and now standing in front of Uluru I could so clearly see where these visions came from. I had the feeling that I had gone back to the very beginning of time when there was nothing but the earth. Ayers Rock is one of those truly inspiring places (10) .... . *swag – heavy-duty sleeping bag A I had no hesitation at all B Shooting stars fell to earth as I gradually fell asleep C but when you get up close you feel the power D steeped in history and legend E nothing could have prepared me for the raw beauty of the landscape we drove through F as well as tents and all the camping gear that was necessary for our adventure G And so we all stayed at the base of the rock H I decided to join a camping group which was led by a very knowledgeable guide I we all joined in with the cooking J before embarking upon my trip to Australia K and one I hope to see again in the not-too-distant future ___/10 marks

Read the different opinions about happiness. Match the quotes to the paragraphs.
A If you keep thinking about happiness, you’ll never be happy. That’s what I think anyway. There are so many books out there on finding that elusive happiness. You are led to believe that you’ll be happy if, for example, you have more money, less work, a bigger house, more friends, true love and a better figure. There it is again, that little word ‘if’, but in the meantime, while you’re busy dreaming about the day when true happiness comes knocking on your door, you forget that happiness can come from being in the moment. B What makes someone truly attractive? What is that indefinable quality that makes you take notice of someone? Is it the way they dress? Is it their slim figure? Is it the Botox-injected, smooth and wrinkle-free face? Today’s obsession with physical perfection has brought about such unhappiness as people feel the need to achieve the impossible. After all, perfection by its very nature is not something we can possess. To my mind, the truly attractive person is the one who shines from within, whose eyes sparkle and whose smile lights up a room. C My best friend is one of the most natural-looking women I know. She doesn’t wear make-up, indeed she doesn’t need make-up because her complexion is so fresh. She grew up in the countryside where she lived an outdoor life and where make-up had no place, and as a result she’s perfectly happy in her own skin. I envy her because her beauty is totally natural. D Healthy body, healthy mind, and the two combined lead to happiness, in my view. How do we maintain this healthy attitude? One way must surely be by feeding ourselves properly and that means not only with real food but also with positive, happy thoughts. How can you be happy if you feel unwell and fill your mind with negative thoughts? A balanced diet of good food and good thinking is the way to feel your best. E You can have all the money in the world, big houses, fast cars, designer clothes and a hundred credit cards, but will these possessions bring happiness? Only if they are shared with those you love. You can be a successful businessman or doctor, but will you feel happy if love is missing? All too often we believe that we are valued in terms of our wealth rather than simply being ourselves. F Why is it that we so rarely appreciate what we have? Are we somehow programmed into thinking that there must be more? How many people are truly content with what they have and who they are? Why is it the case that we believe that contented people must have very low expectations? It’s high time we started to realise how lucky we are and enjoy what we have. 0 1 2 3 4 5
‘If you want to be happy, be.’ ‘The best vitamin to be a happy person is B1 combined with optimism.’ ‘Of all the things you wear, your expression is the most important.’ ‘The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet.’ ‘There is no cosmetic for beauty like happiness.’ ‘He is rich or poor according to what he is, not according to what he has.’

You are going to read a newspaper article about t brothers who have become successful in UK. Five sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A-F the one which fits each gap (1-5). There is one extra sentence which you do not need to use.
From £ 5 to £ 250 million He came to Britain as a 16-year- old with a handful of qualification, £5 in his pocket and a burning ambition to leave his childhood in Kenya behind him. Vijay Patel was brought up in one room with his brother, Bhikhu, as his schoolteacher mother struggled to raise her family after her husband died. Thirty-five years later, Vijay, 51, and his brother own a pharmaceutical company which employs more than 600 people and does £200 million worth of business each year. Together they are worth £254 million- and now they have been jointly named ‘ Entrepreneur of the Year’. It is an inspirational tale. (1)__ __ He says: ‘We are very pleased and very surprised to have been given this kind of recognition. It has really been about a will to succeed and a determination to distance ourselves from the difficulties of our early life.’ He also praises his mother. ‘ She is an incredible lady. She taught us hard work, honesty, and punctuality and we have based our lives on those qualities.’ Vijay’s father was a timber merchant who lived with his wife in the village of Eidoret, 200 miles north of Nairobi, and died when Vijay was six. At the age of 16, Vijay and his brother, who was two years older, kissed their mother goodbye and promised to bring her to Britain when they made their fortunes. ‘It was 1967 and I had little more than my qualifications and a few pounds in my pocket,’ says Vijay. (2)________ And so he set about trying to achieve just that. Typically, Vijay looks on the bright side. ‘When you start from zero, things can’t get any worse.’ According to him, in those circumstances, ‘You have only one way to go, and that’s up if there is a hunger in your belly for success.’ The pair of them certainly had that. ‘ My brother and I were determined to better ourselves and Britain was the land of opportunity,’ he says. Vijay enrolled at a college in north London, and did courses in physics, chemistry and biology, washing dishes in a restaurant at night to earn his keep. He gained a degree at the College of Pharmacy in Leicester. After graduating, he opened a chemist’s shop in 1975- he was 24. He made it his business to know all his customers names, their children and what conditions they suffered from. ‘The idea was that when people had something wrong in them, they went straight to Mr. Patel,’ he says. By 1982, he owned six shops and sales had doubled. From there it was a short step from buying medicines for his own shops (he now has 21) to supplying other pharmacies, then hospitals and wholesalers. (3)________

: Brother Bhikhu, an architect by training, joined Vijay in 1982 to add some ‘financial discipline’ to the company. Vijay says: ‘My brother and I have built this business together. I simply couldn’t have done it without him. We know each other inside out.’ (4) _______ Vijay is keen to continue putting something back into the country he has made his own. ‘We hope we are model citizens and would like to remain so,’ he says. ‘My brother and I have enormous ambition and drive, but we were also lucky enough to live in a country that never stood in our way,’ he says. (5)______ His message for young people is to do the same:’ Identify your aim, and do not let anything deter you from achieving that goal.’
A
B C
‘But to go with those, I had a tremendous ambition to make something of myself,’ he recalls. As he puts it, ‘If you cannot trust your family, then who can you trust?’ Instead, he hopes that his sons will take over the business after they finish their studies.
D
‘We took every opportunity it gave us.’
E
Yet despite his wealth and this award, Vijay remains modest about his success. Last year, company profits hit £13.8 million.
