Level A1 and upwards. For levels A2 and A2+ see variations B and C below Aim To practise giving opinions To focus on holiday vocabulary Task To discuss different holiday options and holiday-related topics in a more or less structured way, depending on the level of the class. Preparation Make one copy of the holiday worksheet for each small group of students. It is a good idea to copy each worksheet onto paper of a different colour. This makes it easier to keep the cut-up packs of prompt cards separate when collecting them from the groups again. Cut up the cards. You might also like to laminate them to make them last longer. Timing 15 – 30 minutes, depending on level Procedure 1 Brainstorm different kinds of holidays. Make sure to mention any expressions you think may be unfamiliar to the class. Avoid getting into a discussion about the pros and cons of the different types as this will pre-empt the task! 2 Divide the class into small groups. 3 Give each group a pack of prompt cards. 4 Ask the students to put the cards face-down on the table in front of them. 5 Tell students to take turns picking up the top prompt card and show it to everyone in the group. 6 Depending on the level of the class, follow one of the following three sets of instructions: A (A1) Ask students to comment on each prompt card by saying whether they go on or like this type of holiday. Encourage them to ask the others in their group for their opinion. If appropriate, students can explain their comments. You might like to write the sentence beginnings you would like them to practise on the board: I like … I don’t like … I never go on … I often do … etc. The last three prompt cards on the worksheet (eating and drinking, packing and souvenirs) are holiday-related topics, rather than types of holiday. You may choose not to include these prompt cards for students at this level. B (A2) Ask students to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the topic on each prompt card. They can also consider the suitability of certain kinds of holiday for different target groups. You might like to make it into a competition to find the most original or the greatest number of advantages and disadvantages for each topic. C (A2+) Ask students to use the topics on the cards to discuss their attitudes towards and experiences of different aspects of holidaying. 7 Finish the activity in class by asking students what makes a good holiday for them.

Follow-up Working in groups again, students can create questionnaires based on their discussions for other students to answer. This can be done before step 7. Variation Instead of working in groups, this can be set up as a milling snowball activity. Each student receives one card and finds a partner to talk about the topics with. After a short exchange of opinions, students exchange cards and move on to another partner to discuss the new topic. Continue until students have spoken to most other students in the class. This variation is more suitable for less advanced students as it gives them the chance to talk about the same topics more than once and, in doing this, to benefit from what they have heard from others in order to refine and expand their own comments.
