This updated textbook is designed to be a study aid for medical students and a resource for medical education. The organisation of the book is standard, with the first chapter devoted to the introduction of imaging techniques and the subsequent chapters organised by body systems and their disorders. The book consists of 10 chapters with 607 figures. Each organ system-based chapter begins with an introduction to the relevant anatomy, physiology and pathology and imaging techniques with the aim of providing a problem-oriented approach to imaging. In addition to the standard sections, the imaging strategies in each system represent a unique aspect of this book. With increasing health care costs being a major concern in current clinical practice, understanding the strengths and weaknesses of imaging modalities enables learners to think through the cost-effectiveness of various diagnostic and therapeutic alternatives, and assists them to decide what roles these imaging modalities play in the imaging of different physiological systems and pathologies.

The book is directed primarily at medical students, but it will also prove useful for medical educators, medical imaging students, medical imaging technologists and non-radiology physicians and nurses. As a resource for medical students and educators, this textbook might be enhanced by outlining learning objectives at the beginning of each chapter and providing study questions or test images at the end. However, it is easily readable and provides a good overview of contemporary radiology, with state-of-the art examples of more recent imaging. The book may also serve as a useful reference for physicians with regard to the judicious use of radiology in the care of their patients. Referral of unnecessary or inappropriate imaging examinations is the driving force of the high cost of health care and exposing their patients to unnecessary risks and inconvenience. A thorough understanding of the appropriate use of imaging modalities in patient care is another goal of the book. This third edition of Essential Radiology aims to provide a valuable resource for enhancing the quality of clinical practice and medical education.
