Example Sanction(s) aligned to the severity of a breach of Discipline The sanctions set out below could be used as penalties for breaches of the Discipline Regulations. Multiple sanctions may be given as a penalty for an individual case. Sanctions may be issued in accordance with the level of procedures of the investigation or from a higher level procedure following discussion with the Secretary of the Committee of Discipline as per Section A.6.2 of the Student Discipline Regulations. This is not an exhaustive list. Sanctions for Student Discipline That the case should be dismissed and no further action taken. Instruct the student to provide a written apology inclusive of a reflection on behaviour(s) and action(s) to the aggrieved party/parties. (Seek advice from Enabling Services prior to issuing this sanction to students with known support needs). To issue a formal written reprimand. To issue a fine (up to a maximum of £100)1 To issue a fine (up to a maximum of £300)1 To require the student to make payment of replacement/compensation costs for loss/damage to University and/or a member of the University Community’s property2. By way of restitution to recommend the agreement that the student performs unpaid services to the University Community to a maximum of 40 hours. (Seek advice from the Secretary of the Committee of Discipline prior to issuing this sanction). A fine may be issued immediately or as a suspended fine as part of a Good Behaviour Agreement. A Good Behaviour Agreement should be issued as a sanction to discourage future misconduct by a student. The Good Behaviour Agreement will normally be payable should the student display similar behaviours and come to the attention of the Discipline Procedure in the future and will contribute to the Student Opportunity Fund. 2
In cases where a student is found to have submitted fraudulent documentation to gain financial advantage from the University, he/she shall be required to pay back any difference in amounts. 3
A suspended expulsion sanction may be issued for the remainder of the academic year or duration of the students studies. Any further evidence of misconduct and/or failure to comply with sanctions issued will normally result in in the student being expelled with immediate effect from the University without referral to the full Committee of Discipline.
