IZABELA PLUTA Untitled (Lot Card) #9, screenprint on found postcard | 2010 |
The world is a complicated place and there is a lot of photography out there that seems to edit that out. Generic stock photography ‘a horse’ ‘a laughing woman’ ‘a swan’ might be the most blatant, but visual simplification has seeped like contaminated ground water. ‘Easy’ pictures for want of a better word, take all aesthetic guises. Someone told me they think it’s about “perfect veneers without substance.” I also suspect that what’s going on is the substance of perfect veneers- pictures slickly addressing their own slickness of content. The images sometimes have weight, sort of like hiding a real rock in a fake rock. Yet, you can often find yourself drinking up crisply categorized images of neat disasters and tame speculation. There are others who work with complexity out in the open and I would put Sydney-based artist Izabela Pluta in this category. Going against seamlessness, Pluta’s practice deftly exists in the gaps. In her installations carefully selected images of different places and situations deliberate collide against singular cogency; shifting the meaning of images on to unstable ground. A postcard is screen printed and becomes something else. As picture imperfect, Pluta’s work appears to reach a self-complicating point, a maze that expands as you run around in it, and a maze further expanded in this special Excerpt Issue.
WELCOME An exhibition within a magazine and a discussion written with pictures, this is what we hope you will find in Excerpt Magazine, Issue 2. Where 30 people have responded to the cover image with an image or moving image of their own. When looking at a photo you often feel like you are the only person who has actually seen it, that the photo is there for you. This is part of the amazing malleability of images, to resonate with the idiosyncrasies in each of us. This Issue is visual pressed against visual, to get us closer to what others see in an image. Here, through a wordless premise, the magazine inhabits the very openness that keeps us looking at and taking images. We hope you enjoy this Special Issue of Excerpt Magazine.

To seize the day is to be aware of one’s passage through time and to accept the personal significance of each moment. It is to pause on the brink of revelation and to savour each second as it lingers like the sweet aftertaste of a ravishing dream. These pictures represent such moments. As in a dream even if the origin is obscure, the geographical landscape and symbols are hauntingly familiar. The only real difference is that you are actually here. Carpe Diem, seize the day. Allow this moment to possess you. It is uniquely your own. George Schwarz 17 August 2010.
