Executive in Residence FAQs: How does Ashoka’s program offer unique leadership development? Executive in Residence takes emerging leaders out of their comfort zone culturally and professionally. Our global network of social entrepreneurs allows for customized placements that provide unique exposure to and perspective on the sector and markets in which your company operates.
What does Ashoka do to facilitate an executive placement? We work with your company to ensure the program aligns with talent development, community engagement, and business goals. We also help you design a selection process to find the highest-potential Executive in Residence candidates. Finally, we interface with the Ashoka Fellows and your team to scope, monitor and evaluate the projects and placements to ensure success.
What happens during an Executive in Residence placement? During the on-site placements, which vary between 2 weeks and 1 year, executives work closely on their project with the social entrepreneur and/or the social entrepreneur’s leadership team. The executive gains an understanding of the market, the sector and the social innovation through office work and field visits to see the social entrepreneur’s program in action.
Is the project over once the executive goes home? Following post-site work and project evaluations, there are ample opportunities for executives to continue engaging with leading social entrepreneurs and Executive in Residence alumni. Ashoka also interfaces with your company to foster further learning and shared value opportunities.
OUR IMPACT: Daniel Canning, Vice President, Product Management - U.S. Money Transfer at Western Union, worked with Ashoka Fellow Satyan Mishra, Founder of Drishtee, and his team to create a marketing plan to scale up operations and improve their visibility in India. “By working within a social business like Drishtee, I was able to get a true appreciation of the ‘shared value’ concept at work. I was also able to witness a highly entrepreneurial organization at work and glean insights into some of the strengths of such an organization that could be applied to a larger organization such as Western Union.” —Daniel Canning Rajeev Sukumaran, Director, Information Systems Strategy at Boehringer Ingelheim, worked with Ashoka Fellow Mukti Bosco, Founder of Healing Fields Foundation, and her team to develop and implement a strategy to expand Healing Fields Foundation’s preventive health focus from the local to the national level. “As we grow as an organization and scale our impact, we look back at the wonderful job Rajeev did of nudging, facilitating and encouraging the Healing Fields Foundation team to find internal solutions to our challenges. This was one of the best gifts from Rajeev’s Executive in Residence placement with HFF, which provided a great learning experience for all of us and has become the cornerstone of our scale-up.” —Ashoka Fellow Mukti Bosco Michael Doell, Director, Corporate Purchasing—Creative Agencies and Promotional Materials at Boehringer Ingelheim worked with Ashoka Fellow Frank Hoffman, Founder of Discovering Hands, and his team to build a support network for visually impaired Clinical Breast Examiners (CBE) in the discovering hands® system. "I am constantly stepping out of my comfort zone while working on a project where I am not the expert but a newcomer. I am trying to add value by sharing observations and perspectives, setting new or enhancing existing strategies, managing change in a newly created market place. This finally helps me to master ambiguous situations in my professional life.” —Michael Doell
