Exercise: Remote Sensing Image Interpretation This exercise will give you some experience with the delineation of surface features from a variety of types of geospatial imagery. Making use of the seven image interpretation characteristics; size, pattern, shape, tone, texture, shadow, and associated features, we will review some of the imagery from previous exercises and attempt to identify several key features. 1. Open the ArcMap document “Image_Interpretation”. Zoom to the Cape Henry bookmark. The following layers are available for your viewing: etm_p14r34_29jul02.img - Landsat ETM+, 30m spatial resolution, 8 band spectral resolution (make use of multi-spectral bands by altering the symbology) O36076H1.TIF - scanned topographic map, the annotation on these Digital Raster Graphics (DRGs) can be an excellent resource used to assist with identification and/or confirmation of particular features 36076h17.sid – DOQQ, 1m spatial resolution, visible bands only do_s23_2500_10.sid through do_s23_2510_40.sid – VBMP, 1ft spatial resolution, visible bands only. High resolution orthophotography is one of the best resources for the identification of relatively small discrete features. Objects larger than 1ft2 can be discerned. 2. In this exercise you will go on a virtual scavenger hunt. Using the 7 characteristics of image interpretations, find 10 of the following items: • • • •
Golf Course • Cape Henry Lighthouse • Old Cape Henry Lighthouse Marina • Island • Forested Park • Lake Running track • swimming pool • Marsh/swamp • Bridge amphibious assault vehicles • Fishing pier
Annotate the location of your features on the image on the following page. Fill out the chart on the last page of this exercise. For each feature identified, please list any/all layer(s) in which it is visible, any/all of the seven characteristics you used to identify the feature, and the approximate central latitude and longitude of the feature. Make sure that your Map Display Units are set to Decimal Degrees and you can read the location information from the bottom right of the ArcMap display. 3. After you’ve found 10 items, answer the following two questions. Explain how you arrived at your answers. (1) During what season was VBMP image was taken? How was the weather? ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ (2) During what season was the DOQQ taken? ______________________________ Exercise-Image Interpretation | Page 1
