(B1) CAPTAIN WALES One of the guys Prince Harry has spent the last five months in very different surroundings to what he is used to. Dressed in khaki and known as Captain Wales he has served his country as an Apache helicopter pilot. Based in Afghanistan and away from his usual duties gave him a chance to be "one of the guys." "Itʼs very easy to forget about who I am when I am in the army. Everyoneʼs wearing the same uniform and doing the same kind of thing.” When asked how it feels to pull the trigger, he replied "Take a life to save a life.... If there's people trying to do bad stuff to our guys, then we'll take them out of the game..." The gaping stares he received as he was spotted sitting in the canteen at meal times however, was a constant reminder that he can never exactly blend in with the crowd!

(A2) FOOTLONG Not quite! John Farley and Charles Pendrack are dissatisfied Subway customers. They are angry about being cheated and have decided to sue the company. A photograph of one of Subway's "Footlong" sandwiches was recently posted on the company's Facebook page. Next to the photograph was a ruler. The sandwich measured eleven inches - one inch short! Stephen DeNittis, the lawyer handling the case, investigated seventeen "Footlong" sandwiches at different Subway stores. Each of them was roughly one inch shorter than it should be. "The case" he said, "is about holding companies to deliver what they've promised." Subway has responded by saying that they will "ensure that every... Footlong sandwich is twelve inches at each location worldwide."

(B2) DEFENDING THE HELPLESS Scarred but alive One year ago, Ben Hardwick posted the moving story of an extraordinary human being who had suffered at the hands of merciless thieves breaking into an orphanage. Anthony Omari and his mother struggled to run and maintain an orphanage in Ngong, Kenya. On the 23rd of January, 2012, a gang of machete-wheeling bandits broke into the orphanage. Anthony, the only adult male in the house, heroically sprung to action to ward of the attackers. His reward was a machete to the face. Posting Anthony's story, Ben pleaded with people to donate whatever they could afford, in the hope of raising 2,000 dollars to build the orphanage a barb-wire fence. Twelve months later and Ben returns to social media with an update. The orphanage now has an eight foot stone fence, security guards, new beds for the children and no shortage of nourishing meals. (A2) HEROIC GREAT-GRANDMOTHER Like rag dolls Two year old Zane Mcfarland has a broken leg and his family are rejoicing. You might ask why a family would be happy about such a thing. Well, together with his great-grandmother, Betty Stewart, Zane was caught in a tornado. Betty wrapped her great-grandson in a quilt. She clung to him, shielding him with her own body. The two were flung through the air like rag dolls. The home they had been in was also lifted by the twister. They were found amongst the debris by paramedics. (B1) REMOTE CONTROL LEGO iPhone on board The next time you create a Lego robot and want to control its movements from a distance, you may just be using your iPhone as a remote control. Last month it was announced at the start of the Las Vegas International CES gadgets show, that Lego's 350 dollar Mindstorms EV3 kit is now compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod touches, through bluetooth wireless connections. Previously it was possible to operate the robots remotely using android smart phones, but not with Apple devices. Apple consumers, understandably, wanted this issue rectified! Given that Apple products hold a huge share of mobile device market, Lego were wise to comply! Also new to the world at the gadgets show was an electronic pen. (B2) REVOLUTIONARY No, you can't have my seat 100 years ago on February 4th, 1913, Rosa Parks was born into an Afro-American family in Tuskegee, Alabama. She was taught from a young child to travel at the back of buses and to give up her seat for white people. But after a hard day's work in 1955, Rosa precipitated a revolution. Tired from her work as a seamstress, Rosa boarded the bus for home, happy to plonk her aching limbs in a vacant seat. A white man got on the bus, and the bus driver requested that Rosa vacate her seat. Spontaneously and politely, Rosa simply refused to give up her seat. She was arrested and charged for violating the laws of segregation. Appealing her conviction Rosa challenged the legality of segregation and sparked a boycott of the bus company which lasted 381 days. In December 1956 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the segregation law was unconstitutional.

(B1) EMERGENCY? Tempers flare A 60 year old man was out hiking on New Zealand's South Island, last week. He was running late and wanted to get back to his car as quickly as possible. The hiker set off his emergency beacon. The beacon alerted The Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Greymouth who promptly responded, dispatching a rescue crew to his aid. When the helicopter landed they found the man in good health and in no danger whatsoever. Using the emergency beacon in this way has incensed the director of the emergency services. "That aircraft was unavailable for any other genuine emergency that may have arisen.'' Due to one man's selfish agenda, the helicopter was in fact out of service for some two and a half hours. Such blatant misuse of the beacon wasted time, money and potentially put others' lives at risk. The man's actions could cost him up to 30,000 dollars and prosecution.

(B2) MAGIC BUTTONS Leaking not an option A technology company in the US has developed an exciting new feature to get the most out of touch screen devices. Users of a now endless array of smart phones and tablets are well and truly smitten with their devices, but have to admit that they miss the certainty of tapping an actual button or key. It can certainly be a hit and miss affair typing messages; all too often unintended mistakes are sent, causing, at the very least, confusion. By the end of the year, touch screen users will be able to avail themselves of actual keys that seemingly magically appear out of the screen. Physical keys are created, as a non toxic fluid is pressurised, pushing up the surface of the panel. When not in use, the key pad simply flattens out and the touch screen reverts to a completely smooth surface. Varying the pressure of the fluid will create buttons that either feel squishy, like a gel, or firm, like a traditional plastic key. The company is still working on ensuring durability, so your device will be sure not to spring a leak!

newsLetter - 20

EXERCISE (B2) MAGIC BUTTONS Leaking not an option 1a What is it that the firm is yet to guarantee its customers of? 1b What is it that users of touch screens would be happy to avoid? 1c What happens to the fluid beneath the surface of the screen that results in buttons forming? 1d Who will benefit from this new technology? 2a As a class, read slowly through the article together in order to practice pronunciation. At the end of each paragraph discuss any new words or phrases and their meanings. 2b Write a letter to your grandmother or grandfather telling him or her about this new technology and how it functions. Try to convince him or her of the ways in which they would benefit from its functionality. (Watch the You Tube clips below if necessary to learn more about the technology and how it looks) 2c Give your letter to a friend for feedback and correction. 2d Read out your letter for the class, if time permits. 3a In pairs, watch the following You Tube clips demonstrating this new technology. It is common for dolphins to travel in groups of two hundred or less. But in this pod, experts estimated that there were between two and three thousand dolphins. The pod extended some seven miles long and five miles wide. The captain of the boat tour, Joe Dutra, said he had never seen a pod so large. He followed the pod for over an hour. When it came to paying the 250 dollar bill, they had the most pleasant surprise of their lives! Attached to the bill was a note which simply read: "Random Act Of Kindness. (B2) COSMIC INTRUDERS Wake-up call In the wake of the damage caused by a meteor entering the earth's atmosphere, showering Russia with debris, injuring five hundred people, and traumatising thousands, there has been renewed interest in becoming much better watchdogs of this planet. Edward Lu, a former NASA astronaut remarks: “Wouldnʼt it be silly if we got wiped out because we werenʼt looking?” In particular, Ed explains, the focus needs to be centred on funding the deployment of early detection tools. A high powered telescope could orbit the sun looking for potential threats. Meanwhile, an asteroid large enough to destroy a city whizzed passed the earth the same day. Observatories in Australia recorded it as the "closest ever predicted approach to Earth, for an object this large." NASA had been tracking the asteroid since its discovery last February, foretelling that it would safely pass us by. They also conceded, that only 10 percent of what's out there ever gets detected. Russia's unannounced cosmic intruder may just be the wake-up call from space needed to save our planet.
