BURLINGTON, BETTER BY BIKE
Spoilt for choice is the best way to describe family-friendly biking options in and around Burlington. In addition to a bike friendly city center, Burlington is also home to the 14-mile world-renowned Island Line Rail Trail. Its southern terminus at Oakledge Park is also the start of the Burlington Greenway segment of the trail. From Oakledge head north through Burlington stopping to enjoy beaches, scenic boardwalks, a state-of-the-art skate park, restaurants galore, and of course creemee stands! At the halfway point, the graceful arc of the Winooski River Bridge, you will cross into Colchester, Burlington’s northern neighbor. The Colchester path winds through through natural areas, across boardwalks, and past Lake Vista to reach the Colchester Causeway, a breathtaking 3-mile pedal across one of the widest spans of water on Lake Champlain. There is literally nowhere else in the world where you can walk – and ride - on water, on a causeway reserved just for foot and bike traffic.
Lower Bayside Park, Colchester 802.316.2929 | www.colchestervt.gov Spend quality time on Lake Champlain without breaking the bank. Here you will find Stand Up Paddleboards (SUP), Kayaks both one and two person and a Pedal boat. These rentals are available for singles or couples. What a better way to spend a summer day!

However, the 1980s were a catalytic decade for the growth of local arts. The renovated Flynn Theatre opened in 1981, dedicated to “the people of the region: to be a forum for a lively variety of entertainment.” Also in 1981, Mayor Bernie Sanders established the Mayor’s Arts Council to “make the arts available to all, regardless of social, economic, or physical constraints.” By 1983, an office was established in a janitor’s closet in the basement of City Hall; in 1990, the City Council formally established Burlington City Arts (BCA). The Flynn’s reopening and BCA’s nascent beginnings coincided with the 1981 completion of the Church Street Marketplace. The Flynn now serves over 200,000 people each season, including 38,000 students from 172 schools and 196 homeschool families, and over 130,000 arts lovers participate in BCA’s gallery exhibitions and multidisciplinary programs. Imagine downtown Burlington without the Flynn, BCA, and Church Street Marketplace! Another long-lasting venture that flourished: in 1983, the Flynn collaborated with BCA to produce the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival, now gearing up for its 34th annual festival in June, with 110 hours of free music for more than 70,000 attendees. And on 12/31/1983, downtown Burlington inaugurated the annual First Night festival. Phish played the first of many performances at Nectar’s in 1984
and in 1986, artists and neighborhood merchants banded together to form the Greater Pine Street Association setting the stage for the South End Arts and Business Association (SEABA). SEABA’s annual South End Art Hop, now draws over 30,000 visitors each fall. This summer, BCA relocates its print and clay studios to a new space on Pine Street, adding even more vibrancy to this neighborhood.
A LOOK INTO THE 1980'S ART SCENE
Burlington has long been a hotbed for the arts. Memorial Auditorium opened in 1927 and hosted amazing concerts over the years before its closing last year. The extraordinary UVM Lane Series began presenting in 1955, Lyric Theatre performed its first musical in 1974, and Nectar’s opened that same year.
Memorial Auditorium was robustly busy throughout the ‘80s. UVM Lane series brought in such world greats as Itzhak Perlman, Marcel Marceau, Tokyo String Quartet, Judy Collins, London Symphony Orchestra, and Nina Simone. Independent producer Jay Strausser booked numerous Reggae bands, Ray Charles, and, in 1991, presented the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Smashing Pumpkins with a then unknown opening band, Pearl Jam. Burlington’s artistic community has grown exponentially since the ‘80s. Frog Hollow opened its Church Street craft gallery in 1991. The Flynn expanded with the smaller FlynnSpace in 2000, home to Vermont Stage and other local artists. On the lakefront, ECHO opened in 2003 with Main Street Landing following with its two theaters in 2005. In the Old North End neighborhood, North End Studios began programming 2008 and Off Center for the Dramatic Arts opened in 2010, among many other venues. Today, summer festivals abound, new galleries thrive, theater companies flourish, musicians play in multiple clubs, and choreographers continue to dance—all on the bedrock of the formative 1980s. TIMELESS MEETS CONTEMPORARY
In 1990, Burlingtonians voted on a very special project that would transform the waterfront into the vibrant place that it is today. Twenty-seven years later, the Waterfront Revitalization Plan has well paid off; it is now an alluring fusion of timeless throwbacks and contemporary trends, wonderful for visitors and locals alike. Getting to the Burlington Waterfront is easy - there are plenty of ways by land and lake. If you’re coming from New York, you can hop the ferry and arrive right at the King Street dock. Bike in on our new and beautifully renovated bike path while you’re renting a bike from Local Motion, a wonderful nonprofit rental shop. You can even hop a train from Green Mountain Railroad from a few different VT locations. And of course, if you’re already spending time in Burlington, you can just catch the free College Street Shuttle. It will take you right down to the docks where you can take a cruise on the Spirit of Ethan Allen and then learn about the ecology of Lake Champlain at ECHO Lake Aquarium. When you arrive along the waterfront, there is so much to see -and do and eat that you’ll run out of time if you try to get it all in one day! Spend some time any of the gorgeous parks -Waterfront Park, Perkins Pier, or Battery Street Park -all other stunning views of Lake Champlain. If you enjoy sailing, you can rent a sailboat from Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center. Don’t know how to sail? No problem. The captains of the Whistling Man Schooner and Let’s Go Sailing will gladly take you out - no experience

necessary! If you just enjoy looking at the lake from land, check out Burlington Segway Tours - they will take you along the waterfront to show you all the gorgeous scenery and hot spots to visit. The sun & water will make you hungry, but there’s plenty of food down by the waterfront all local restaurants and all delicious. There’s burgers, dogs, and of course, ice cream at Ice Cream Bob’s, crepes at the Skinny Pancake, cocktails and casual fare on the docks at Splash at the Boathouse, Burlington’s best seafood at Shanty on the Shore, and the tastiest creemees Vermont has to other at the Burlington Bay Market. And brand new this summer, a cool vibe, California-inspired restaurant called Spot on the Dock will open on King Street, right by the Ferries. Hosting events all summer long, the parks are always bursting with a variety of events. Kid’s Day, Discover Jazz Festival, The Burlington Wine & Food Festival, The Vermont Brew Festival, the Maritime Festival, and many, many more take place right along the gorgeous shores of Lake Champlain in Burlington, Vermont. So while you’re visiting or when you’re planning, spend a day, or two, or three down along Burlington’s beautiful waterfront. It continues to become a destination to be enjoyed by all! For those that prefer the downtown experience, Burlington features four major hotels – three branded properties and one independent hotel. Each location is walkable to the city’s pedestrian mall, the Church Street Marketplace, as well as to Lake Champlain via Burlington's Waterfront and access to the Burlington Bike Path. Hotel Vermont, the Queen City’s lifestyle hotel, boasts an on-site restaurant, Juniper Bar & Restaurant with outdoor dining and lake views as well as the Burlington location of the James Beard nominated Hen of the Wood. Known for its farm-to-table cuisine, Burlington offers an array of dining options from coffee shops to kid-friendly eateries to fine dining. If you are looking for a cozy and intimate stay, the Burlington area also offers a number of inns and bed and breakfasts. Often offering a more personal guest experience, bed and breakfasts and inns are a great way to feel a part of the neighborhood; these accommodations usually also include breakfast, allowing you to dine with your host and chat with other guests. Just north of downtown, North Beach Campground is one of the city’s hidden treasures. The campground is open to tenting and recreation vehicles but reservations must be made in advance through Burlington Parks and Recreation. If you are willing to stay outside of the city, more secluded camping options are available just a short drive away from private campgrounds PC: Hotel Vermont
to state parks on the water or in the foothills of the Green Mountains. If the mountains sound intriguing but sleeping outside does not, Vermont is home to a number of relaxing and rejuvenating resorts and spas. Resorts often offer a more holistic stay with restaurants on property, a myriad of activities for any season – from skiing to Frisbee golf - on the grounds, as well as pools, massage and spa treatments to help you fully unwind. EAT
BURLINGTON BYTES: INSIDER SECRETS
Here at Eat Vermont, we love food. We spend as much time as we can in kitchens, on farms, and at breweries. Most days, we have the same experience as anyone else: we get to meet wonderful people and enjoy delicious food and drink. Over time, though, spending so much time exploring and eating pays off. We want to take a moment to share a few pro-tips about local establishments in the Burlington area. Indulge our indulgence:
Breakfast: Several years ago, August First Bakery & Cafe instituted a new policy asking their customers to refrain from using their
laptops. The owners, Phil and Jodi Whalen, were at first quite concerned this type of rule could create some community backlash, but it didn’t. To the contrary, people come and engage with each other over breakfast sandwiches made from scratch on freshly baked bread, homemade granola bowls and delicate and decadent pastries. Magical.
Lunch: The Skinny Pancake is famous around town for their savory crepes, and for good reason. You can find them at the food cart
on Church Street, their restaurant down on the Burlington waterfront, or for a perfect pre-flight meal at the Burlington International Airport. However, they don’t specialize in just crepes – The Skinny Pancake recently spearheaded the video series called “Local Motive” that was distributed by Vermont PBS and explores local food systems and solutions to strengthening the bonds between local consumers and food producers - definitely worth a watch!
Snack: New Moon Café is a popular spot for rich espresso drinks, indulgent bite-sized cupcakes, as well as a full, freshly made breakfast/lunch menu (that includes a rotating list of seasonal specials and a variety of vegan and gluten-free options!). Besides their amazing food selection, New Moon has a deep commitment to serving the community. Customers can pay for meals (at at-cost prices) that anyone - cold, hungry, and/or homeless - can redeem. The cafe matches all donations and opens their space to anyone who needs a place to eat or rest. Drinks: El Cortijo has the best margaritas we’ve ever had. There’s just nothing that beats capping a long day of walking around town
like popping into a booth at Cortijo and sliding into a salty rim glass of tropical heaven. The blood orange and coconut margaritas are in a fierce competition for our favorite, but you absolutely couldn't go wrong by trying both!
Dinner: Leunig’s has been a Church Street classic for decades. Our favorite shared appetizer is the Graham Cracker Crusted Duck Frites, which come served with a chili maple dipping sauce. The owner Bob Conlon, started in the restaurant industry at 15 years old as a busboy and worked his way to the top of Leunig’s. Bob, a living legend in town, is one of the most devoted owners we know and can be found at the restaurant almost every day of the week greeting and seating customers. A must-taste destination… and while you’re there, let Bob know we sent you! Written by Eat Vermont. Eat Vermont is a creative media group that believes access to great food is a human right. Our mission is to tell the stories of producers – farms, restaurants, and value-added brands – and to help make it easy for them to focus on their passion: creating good food and drink! WE THANK THE LAKE CHAMPLAIN REGIONAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE FOR NAMING LEUNIG’S BISTRO BUSINESS OF THE YEAR WE ARE HONORED, AND WE HOPE THAT EVERYONE WHO VISITS HAS AN EXPERIENCE LIKE THE ONE SHARED RECENTLY BY THIS REVIEWER ON YELP: “Lovely little boisterous French eatery in the heart of downtown Burlington…The warmth and crispness of the venue was what jumped out at me as I walked in; this was not a stuffy French restaurant, but rather a hospitable dinner spot with a welcoming vibe. It’s finer dining, but not over the top. Be comfortable and enjoy your cozy confines…you will be very close to your table neighbors. However it’s more part of its charm than a nuisance to be “Nice choice seated close together.
for a date, or a small group dinner with friends∏”
The menu is simple, though larger than I would expect from the typical French restaurant…warm soups and bread along with deliciously prepared meats in the classic French styles. The wine menu …offered a nice selection of accompaniments to the entrées…The service was succinct and professional…The noise level is, as I said, boisterous, and the tables are a bit close together; however, don’t let that discourage you, as you will see it invites the atmosphere nicely. They also offer most of the dishes in ‘petite’ plates, which I loved. Overall, I suggest enjoying a meal here. Nice choice for a date, or small group dinner with friends; if you do, please partake in the creme brulee... you can walk it off with a nice stroll through the parlor after; trust me, it’s most definitely worth the calories!” –Yelp reviewer, November 2016

DRINK
Clinking glasses, the unofficial state song, lures both nuanced palates and novice social gatherers. From sommeliers to your Average Joe, many make the pilgrimage to our burgeoning brewing mecca here in Vermont, where you can appreciate the Green Mountains from arguably the best seat in the house: through a pint glass. Steeping hops, fermenting apples, harvesting grapes--our crafters apply the same “Made in Vermont” flair that’s long attracted outsiders to Vermont maple syrup to beer, wine, mead and spirits. Farm to glass, Vermont crafters combine passion, hard work and local products to craft intoxicating libations, turning glistening Lake Champlain waters into a $200 million industry. One zip code and nearly 100 stateside hard-beverage artisans: Vermont may be small but its brewing repertoire is far from it--instead, Vermont is first in the nation for breweries and brew pubs per capita and what’s bottled and packaged in this state has since earned nationwide recognition--including the Top Beer Tourism Destinations by Travelocity in 2016.
32 | www.VERMONT.ORG
In this beer lover getaway, not only can you tantalize your tastebuds with these craft beverages but can immerse yourself into the culture. Watch brewers bottle their art, complete a hard cider tasting and get a crash-course on winemaking--let your thirst and appreciation for the craft steer your way through the state. Hop from one brewery and cidery to the next in Burlington--from Magic Hat and Switchback to Citizen Cider and Foam, or spend your afternoon in its surroundings regions at either Shelburne Vineyards or WhistlePig Rye Whiskey; come in the Fall to celebrate stunning foliage and Oktoberfest, or spend the summer sipping craft beer at a waterfront concert. No matter the season, region or whether you are an in- or out-of-state traveler, there is something for you. Come thirsty and ready to explore a world-class brewing culture; Vermont has reserved you a seat at the bar and is waiting to pour you a glass. Visitors and residents have come to the Islands for over a century for the Lake experience: boating, fishing, swimming, ice skating in winter and enjoying the peace and quiet all year round. We encourage you to take advantage of the beauty of Lake Champlain, as well as centuries of history and a world-class geological formation. You know you have arrived at a special place when you approach the Islands on the Causeway crossing Lake Champlain. The lake shimmers with reflected sunlight as the purple Adirondacks rise over the lake and Islands in the distance. Whether you come in winter or in summer, there is always lots to do and unobstructed views are revealed at every turn. This winter you can stay at the cozy North Hero House Inn and Restaurant, enjoy a fine meal and activities like skating, ice fishing and the Great Ice Festival held from February 17-19. As winter gives way to spring and summer, the lake opens up for a multitude of activities and events. The islands are one of the most popular destinations for bicycling. Ride the Island Trail Line and take the Bike Ferry as it crosses Lake Champlain to the Islands. The gentle terrain make the 7 Island Bike Trails accessible for all ages to be awed by natural beauty. In July and August, the famous Lippizzan Stallions perform at Knight State Park. The Islands are home to Snow Farm Vineyard in South Hero and Hall Home Place in Isle la Motte. Our warmer micro-climate produces award winning wines and ice ciders for you to taste the “terroir” of our fertile farmlands. From Spring through Foliage season, the Lake Champlain Islands are a magical place to swim in its clear waters, Kayak with Island Passages, cruise with Driftwood Boat Tours and take your turn angling in the finest fishery North America has to offer. The Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce has an office in the quaint 19th century village of North Hero. DAY TRIPPING
Take a break from the mundane and avoid the maddening chaos that is booking flights, crafting week-long itineraries and budgeting for big vacation expenses--instead, spend a few hours or an entire weekend afternoon in any of regions which give Vermont its irresistible appeal. Not quite sure where to begin your journey? Looking for some inspiration? With our prepared regional day trip itineraries, you can work your way through the state in a manner that speaks to your interests and the season. Begin a brew tour at Burlington’s Foam Brewery, move along to South Burlington’s Magic Hat, and then finish off your day of hoppy elixirs with a glass of vino at Shelburne Vineyard; or make your afternoon about the kids with a engaging lesson at ECHO, Leahy Center for Lake Champlain, lunch along Church Street Marketplace, and a tour of Vermont Teddy Bear. Head to Waterbury where your friends Chunky Monkey and Cherry Garcia are ready to dish out tasty entertainment at the Ben and Jerry’s Factory, and then head to Stowe Mountain Resort for a day of skiing or a gondola ride up the mountainside to explore fall foliage. Spend a summer day on the Lake Champlain islands. Catch the farmer’s market in South Hero, or head to Grand Isle State Park to paddleboard; have Snow Farm Vineyard and Winery or East Shore Vineyard prepare a wine tasting, or grab lunch and peruse art at Grand Isle Art Works. Occupy a rainy spring day with history at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum at Basin Harbor; or watch the sunset at Colchester’s Niquette Bay State Park. In Vermont, boredom and stress are never part of the equation.
A PERFECT DAY FOR AN ADVENTURE
Whether a local or visitor, one of the best things to do in Vermont is escape for awhile. Along the 159 mile stretch connecting its Northern mountains to its the Southern valleys, Vermont features a slathering of treasures. And in a state where you can travel from one end to the next in a matter of hours, and stop by quaint villages, stunning peaks, museums overflowing with delights and wonders along the way, a day trip is a great way to take in all the Green Mountain state has to offer.
Because in the end, you won’t remember pouring yourself a second cup of coffee or paying your electric bill--climb a mountain, share a drink with friends and let Vermont be your guide to a day you aren’t likely to forget.
