T
he Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) and United Nations Development Organization (UNIDO) have strategized plans to deploy the use of standards to drive development in the nation's agricultural sector. During a two-day training for SON staff on certification programmes, the agency's partnership with UNIDO is aimed at ensuring that Nigeria's agricultural products from the farm to table meet the minimum requirement of global standards. According to the Director General, SON, Osita Aboloma, to reduce rejection of Nigerian products in global markets, the agency would relentlessly continue to mentor and provide technical assistance to local manufacturers, exporters and importers on the need to do things the right way. He added that the collaboration would also end further occurrence of Nigeria's agricultural produce being rejected at the global markets stressing that the agency had already taken other measures towards enhancing its performances in the area of standardisation and quality assurance. in favour of India. The two countries have long been locked in a bitter rivalry. But worsening political relations seem to have little impact on bilateral trade relations, according to trade analysts. One reason for Pakistan's improved exports to India is high cement demand in the neighbouring country. After growing by 14 per cent, exports from Pakistan to India amounted to $286 million in the July-February period. Imports from India fell 23 per cent to $958.3 million from $1,244 million recorded a year ago, the SBP report said. (Excerpt from www.economictimes.indiatimes.com)
