Leonard Macon Ridge Station LSU AgCenter Winnsboro LA 71295 White grubs: Phyllophaga spp. Cutworm: Agrotis spp. Southern corn rootworm: Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi (Barber) Chinch bug: Blissus leucopterus leucopterus (Say) Sugarcane beetle: Euetheola rugiceps (LeConte) Field performance of ten selected seed treatments was evaluated against soil insects in field corn at the Northeast Research Station near St. Joseph, LA. Corn seeds pre-treated with Cruiser Extreme (A14115) and other seed treatments were planted on a commerce silt loam soil on 15 May with a John Deere 7100 series planter equipped with 10-inch seed cones mounted to replace the seed hoppers. Plot size was 4 rows (centered on 40 inches) x 65 ft. Granular in-furrow treatments (Force 3G) were applied at planting with 8-inch belt cone applicators mounted to replace the standard granular applicators. Treatments were replicated four times in a RCB design. Plant density and number of healthy plants were recorded at 21, 28, and 35 DAP by examining 10 ft on each of the two center rows within each plot. Grain yield was determined by mechanically harvesting the two center rows of each plot on 15 Sep. Grain yield was adjusted to 14% moisture. Data collected from the two center rows in each plot were pooled. Pooled data were analyzed using ANOVA and means were separated using the LSD test at 0.05. Insect pest pressure was very low during the test period. There were no significant differences in plant stand, number of healthy plants, and grain yield among the ten treatments. The results suggest that benefit of corn seed treatments is not warranted in Louisiana when pest pressure is low.
