(F48) COTTON: Gossypium hirsutum L.; 'Stoneville 5222BG2' EVALUATION OF DIAMOND 0.83EC FOR CONTROL OF TARNISHED PLANT BUG, AND STINK BUGS IN COTTON, 2003 R. H. Gable LSU AgCenter Macon Ridge Research Station Winnsboro, LA 71295 Phone: (318) 435-2157 Fax: (318) 435-2133 E-mail: [email protected] E. A. Peters M. M. Willrich B. R. Leonard Tarnished plant bug (TPB): Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois) Southern green stink bug (SGSB): Nezara viridula (L.) Brown stink bug (BSB): Euschistus servus (Say) The efficacy of Diamond 0.83EC against TPB and stink bugs in cotton was evaluated. Cotton seed were planted into a Gigger silt loam soil on 20 Jun in plots consisting of 16 rows (centered on 40 inches) × 65 ft. Treatments were arranged in a RCB design and replicated 6 times. Insecticides were applied on 13, 20, and 28 Aug with a John Deere 6000 hi-clearance sprayer and CO 2 charged delivery system calibrated to deliver 5 gpa through Teejet TX-8 hollow cone nozzles (2 per row) at 46 psi. Tarnished plant bug and stink bug (SGSB and BSB) densities were determined by sampling 12-row ft of plants per plot with a shake sheet (3 × 3 ft) on 19, 22, and 28 Aug and 9 Sep. Data for the 4 samples were combined to yield seasonal means. The test area received 0.06 inch of rain between the first insecticide application and the last sample. Data were analyzed with ANOVA, and means were separated according to DMRT (P ≤ 0.05). There were no significant differences among treatments for densities of TPB adults. All insecticide treatments significantly reduced TPB nymphs compared to the non-treated control. All insecticide treatments, except Diamond + Karate, significantly reduced stink bug densities compared to the non-treated control. There was no phytotoxicity observed with any of the insecticide treatments in this test.
