Facts & figures on the Brothers Grimm Who were the Brothers Grimm?......................................................................................... The brothers Jacob Grimm (born 4 January 1785 in Hanau, died 20 September 1863 in Berlin) and Wilhelm Grimm (born 24 February 1786 in Hanau, died 16 December 1859 in Berlin) were linguists and literary scholars. The Brothers Grimm became famous after publishing a collection of ‘Children’s and Household Tales’. Which fairytales did the Brothers Grimm record?.......

Famous examples include Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel and Mother Hulda. Five interesting facts about the Brothers Grimm*: 1. The fairytales collected by the brothers have been translated into more than 160 languages. 2. The Brothers Grimm Fairytale Festival in Hanau started in 1985 in the park of Philippsruhe Palace and has enchanted more than a million visitors so far. 3. The final series of Deutsche Mark banknotes issued in 1991 featured the Brothers Grimm on the 1,000 Mark note. 4. In 1896 a statue in honour of the Brothers Grimm was erected on the market square in Hanau. It now marks the starting point of the German Fairytale Route. Since 2006 Hanau has officially been calling itself ‘Brothers Grimm town’. 5. The Brothers Grimm were buried next to each other at the Old St Matthew’s Cemetery in Berlin-Schöneberg, where other well-known Germans also have their last resting place.
