BOARD PRESIDENT’S REPORT

OCEAN PINES ADVISORY

COMMITTEE DIRECTORY

After The Summer, Into The Fall We have concluded the summer and the old Yacht Club is gone, but the memories will live on in the hearts and minds of many. As you may have heard we have re-constituted a solid team of Bob Thompson, members experienced in construction, OPA staff leadership, and our general contractor to oversee our construction and investment in the new facility. Soon we Tom Terry will have a page on our OPA website dedicated to sharing information on the progress of the construction. One issue that has arisen in the community is an incorrect message that some costs for the new Yacht Club will not be counted toward the $4.3 million approved budget. To be clear, costs associated with this construction and creation of the new Yacht Club will be counted toward that budget regardless if the source is the 5-year funding plan or reserves for replacement. The status of the project will be reported at a minimum of twice a month in the Board’s working sessions and Board meetings. Further this information will be made available on the OPA website. Additionally, the General Manager will be continuing his town meetings which I am sure will include updates on the Yacht Club effort progress. While the new Yacht Club is clearly our primary focus, we are moving forward with the effort to continue the assessment of all our assets and facilities. The Board is looking forward to hearing from our General Manager on the updated long term requirements and plans that will continue our efforts to establish strategies to meet our needs. This approach will allow us to stabilize the financing and funding tactics needed and to answer the larger question of what levels of reserves will be required over the years. The Board and our General Manager have continued our cooperative approach on the OPA relationship with the Worcester County Commissioners. Board members are attending the Commissioners’ general meetings to assure we are fully aware of issues that could affect our community. The Board is currently working on its initial input and budget guidance to the General Manager as the budgeting process for our organization begins again. This multi-month effort begins with the Department Heads working directly with the General Manager to provide a full assessment of the many varying requests for programs and services. As you might guess with the breadth and diversity of our residents we have a challenge every year to meet individual and combined needs and wants.

But The “Memories

Will Live On in The Hearts and Minds of Many.

YACHT CLUB It has been many years in the making and now the progress is something real we can all see. The old facility has been removed and the new facility is well underway. The utility work is finally complete, the first floor concrete has been poured, the masonry work for the elevator shafts are nearing completion, Bob Thompson steel structural beams have been set and walls are being erected. It is very exciting to reach this stage of work. Getting to this point has been a bit challenging however, every great accomplishment comes with its share of challenges. By overcoming all the challenges we can then say we have truly accomplished something. While there has been a whole lot of noise about some of the internal bumps with the project team, anyone with any type of project experience understands this is not unusual when working through any major project. Any good team has strong players and with strong players will come strong opinions which will lead to strong disagreements. That is to be expected. It is with that level of energy you find the very best results. You just need to stay focused on the end result and work through any differences along the way. I am pleased to say the team that started the project is the same team sitting at the table today and this is exactly what we have been able to do. While the contractor remains focused on construction, we have turned our efforts towards operations. Areas such as new staff training manuals, menus, new job descriptions and much more are being addressed. Additionally, we are up to 27 scheduled wedding/events for the 2014-15 year. The goal over the next few months is to get the exterior closed up before Old Man Winter starts beating on us. Once the building is closed in, the interior work can be accomplished regardless of weather. Keep your eye on our website as we update you on the progress of construction! COMMITTEE IN ACTION We just had our largest Health Fair event held at our Community Center. Each year it has grown. We had over 500 attendees at this year’s event. Over 450 flu shots were given, 75 spine screenings, 77 bone density screenings, hearing tests, blood pressure readings, body mass index (BMI) screenings and so much more. This was a fantastic event put together by our Communications Advisory Committee. Many thanks to the Committee and our Recreation & Parks team for their efforts for another successful Health Fair! LOSING SUCCESSFULLY We recently introduced the Weight Watchers® program right here in our community. Since the program began on September 4th, we have had two times more participation and more than double the weight loss over the previous location for the program. Participants have lost over 380 pounds in total in that six week period. What a great start to the program here in OP! Anyone interested in participation (continued page 6) OCEaN PiNES QUartErlY NEwSlEttEr

TREASURER’S REPORT

Comments Regarding First Quarter Summary Financial Report The accompanying Summary Financial Report for the First Quarter of the Association’s 2014 Fiscal Year reflects a negative variance to Budget of $102,000. This negative variance is the result of Net Operating Revenues Bill Cordwell being $326,000 less than budgeted and Operating Expenses being $224,000 less than budgeted. The unfavorable variance to budget is due to the net performance of our amenities which were responsible for a net operating profit of $615,000 vs. the budgeted $852,000, resulting in an overall negative operating variance of ($237,000). The largest of the amenity negative variances were the Yacht Club ($76,000), Golf Operations ($63,000), Marinas ($50,000), and Aquatics ($40,000), accounting for $229,000 of the $237,000 Amenities’ variance. Partially offsetting the negative variances from Amenities were positive variances of $135,000 from Departmental Operations. YACHT CLUB The ($76,000) negative variance of the Yacht Club resulted from significantly less business than budgeted, which undoubtedly related to the construction activity and the overall condition of the facility. Revenues were $410,000 vs. the $660,000 budgeted, a negative variance of ($250,000), or 38%, and represented a decrease of 34% from the 1st Quarter of last year. Regular F&B revenue vs. Budget was negative 44%, whereas Banquet F&B was negative 8%. GOLF Golf Operations’ negative variance of ($63,000) was the result of an $85,000 shortfall in net revenues due to fewer rounds of golf being played than were budgeted. Total revenue for the 1st Quarter, however, was 24% greater than the prior year, reflecting the fact that all 18 holes were open for play this year for the entire period. AQUATICS The Aquatics’ negative variance of ($40,000) was the result of a negative revenue variance of ($62,000) and positive expense

variances of $22,000. The revenue variance primarily relates to a $48,000 (21%) shortfall in membership dues, undoubtedly related to the closing of the Yacht Club Pool for repairs and the uncertainty as to when it would reopen. MARINAS The Marina Operations’ negative variance of ($50,000) was the result of a negative revenue variance of ($62,000) and a positive variance in expenses of $12,000. The net revenue variance was primarily related to a $40,000 shortfall in slip rental revenue (24% variance and down 20% from the prior year). Net revenue (sales less product cost) from fuel sales was $22,000 less than budgeted, of which approximately 50% related to the first six weeks of the Fiscal Year, during which period fuel was not available for sale due to construction related delays. CONCLUSION Overall the 1st Quarter negative Operating Variance of ($102,000) compares with ($140,000) for the same period last year. In both years, the sole reason for the overall variance was the negative variances at key amenities. In FY 2014 however, the golf negative variance was reduced to ($63,000) from last year’s ($155,000), but the Yacht Club’s negative variance increased to ($76,000) from $37,000. Additionally, the Marinas’ operations, which was close to break-even last year, had a negative variance of ($50,000) in FY 2014, primarily due, as noted above, to less slip rental revenue. FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER (cont’d from page 3) should call our Recreation & Parks Department! SPECIAL RECOGNITION The Worcester County Veterans Memorial at Ocean Pines recently received the 2nd annual “William Donald Schafer Helping People Award.” Bob Thompson The Veterans Memorial Foundation was singled out for its commitment to remembering and honoring the sacrifices of veterans through its Educational Outreach program. Congratulations to Marie Gilmore, President and the many volunteers of the Foundation who have worked so hard to make the memorial possible. The group is currently expanding the education offered at the memorial to include a walking path with 14 interpretive panels on various wars along with three new flagpoles that will display MIA, KIA, and the Veterans Remembered Flags. Another great addition to Ocean Pines. ON THE GOLF FRONT I just had a visit from the Regional USGA (United States Golf Association) Representative who was impressed by the dramatic transformation our golf course has been through over the last couple of years. Combine this with all the positive feedback we have received from our golf membership as well as all the favorable comments we have received from the package players and you can see the long-term investments recently made to the golf greens are beginning to pay off. The fall rounds have increased from the past two seasons and a lot of effort is being put into positioning us for a strong spring!

new site will be to provide a secure interactive portal where you will be able to update your contact info, pay your assessment, buy OPA merchandise or sign up for a class. GOING GREEN In addition to our curbside recycling program, we are looking into alternative fueling solutions for our vehicles. These solutions are designed to generate lower annual fuel costs, cleaner burning fuel with lower emissions, and less wear on our vehicles engines. We are also speaking with companies that offer green solutions from solar power that may be able to meet some of the Association’s electric demands. MOVING FORWARD As I have stated on many occasions we are not positioning for short term gains. We are developing the right strategies and implementing specific actions for long-term results. Yes, we will fumble the ball once in a while, we may drop a pass or two on occasion and we are going to throw an interception. One thing that you can be sure of is that it will not keep us from trying. We are going to continue to design plans, practice our plays, evaluate our results, and suit up for a game each Sunday!

OP FIRE DEPARTMENT

Accepting Donations for AEDs Every 34 Seconds Someone has a Heart Attack... In conjunction with The OP Volunteer Fire Department EMS, Ocean Pines Association is currently accepting donations for the purchase of AEDs to be housed at several of our community facilities. Automated external defibrillators, or AEDs, have saved countless lives. An AED is a lightweight, portable device that delivers an electric shock through the chest to the heart. The shock can stop an irregular rhythm and allow a normal rhythm to resume in a heart in sudden cardiac arrest. Most sudden cardiac arrests result from ventricular fibrillation. This is a rapid and unsynchronized heart rhythm starting in the heart’s lower pumping chambers. The heart must be “defibrillated” quickly, because a victim’s chance of surviving drops by 7 to 10% for every minute normal heartbeat isn’t restored. If you would like to help us by donating to this program, please mail checks in any amount to: Ocean Pines Association. Attn: AED Program, 239 Ocean Parkway, Ocean Pines, MD 21811.

Winner Announced in the OP Volunteer Fire Dept. House Lotto 2013 The Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department’s 2013 House Raffle was again a huge success! All 3,000 tickets were sold allowing the OPVFD to achieve its goal for the annual fundraiser which provides funds to purchase equipment for the best possible protection of the community. Thank you to ALL who helped to make this the most successful event yet: the local media, which provided the coverage by publishing press releases with details and entry forms for the raffle that made selling ALL the tickets possible; members of the OPVFD who manned the house, enabling the public to see it inside and out; and to all the many people who again supported the OPVFD with the purchase of ALL the tickets. The brand new, custom 3BR, 2BA Brunoribuilt home located on 82 Windjammer Road was won by Kay and Lenny Hickman! But in reality, we’re all winners as your support helps our fire department better protect our community.

New Maryland Laws Have Taken Effect

OP POLICE DEPARTMENT

Every October 1st, new laws take effect in Maryland. Of particular note to everyone who drives are the following laws: • Driver Using Handheld Telephone While Motor Vehicle is in Motion: This is now a PRIMARY reason for traffic stops, and fines are as follows: 1st Offense = $83 fine 2nd Offense = $140 fine 3rd and Subsequent Violations = $160 fine • Seatbelt Use in Rear Seat: All passengers in the rear seat are now required to be utilizing seatbelts or child restraints. This is a SECONDARY offense. Driver fined $83 per unrestrained passenger.

Be On The Lookout! Burglaries On The Rise Recently During August through mid-September we had several residences that were burglarized. Active investigation(s) are still taking place, but to recount the facts in these cases: There are several common characteristics of these burglaries: • The burglaries are occurring between 5PM and 8PM in most cases. • The residences are entered through the back doors, some of which are unlocked. • The victims are often absent from their residences for a short period of time which may indicate the suspects are watching to see the victims leave before attempting entry. • Suspect may be knocking on doors of residences asking for fictitious individuals to see if the residence is occupied. • Some residences may have been entered from off the golf course, but not all residences, which are spread throughout the community. • In nearly all cases, jewelry, money and precious metals seem to be the target of the burglar.

OP Police Dept. Promotes Public Awareness Chief Massey recently presented a segment on scams at the Worcester County Library. He also did a crime prevention presentation to Neighborhood Watch members and residents at The Parke.

Help Us Take a Bite Out of Crime! Join OP Neighborhood Watch Summer is here and the living is easy! But remember—do not let your guard down when it comes to crime. Always lock your car, home and boat! Watch out for phone and email scams! Discard your prescription drugs safely—at the Drug Drop Box at the OP Police Department! Never drink and drive! Join the OP Neighborhood Watch! We are looking for more volunteers. For info, call 410.641.7747 or email [email protected].

Juvenile Burglary Arrests Two 14-year-old youths were charged with Fourth Degree Burglary of a residence.

Scam Victims A resident was scammed out of nearly $1,300 when she received a bogus check in the mail, cashed it, then wired money back to the scammer, who vanished. Two other residents had their credit cards charged for bogus charges. They only discovered the illegal charges when they audited their end of the month statements. Another victim was scammed out of money by the “Grandpa/Grandmom Scam” for bail money to be wired. The victim receives a phone call alleging a relative is in jail and asks for bail money to be wired to them to be bailed out. Please be careful and double-check the details of any suspicious requests!

Active Shooter Training There are two elementary schools bordering Ocean Pines. In the event of a major crisis at one of those schools, there is a high probability that Ocean Pines Police would be a first responder. In conjunction with the Worcester County Sheriff's Department, all of our police officers have received training on how to properly respond to save lives in the event of a shooting incident at the schools.

GREEN STREET

from the Environment & Natural Assets Advisory Committee

Can You Say Phragmites (frag-might-eez)? You may not know how to pronounce it, but you certainly have seen it here in the Pines. Phragmites, also known as common reed, is a large, coarse, perennial grass often found in wetlands. Phragmites is an invasive plant that reduces the diversity of native plants and wildlife species, which contributes to the degradation of our waterways. It grows in wet areas including fresh or brackish marshes, creeks, edges of ponds and lakes, ditches, and the dune systems of barrier coastal islands. Phragmites has a thick stalk that can reach 13 feet in height. It has a large plume-like flower that persists throughout the winter. Phragmites most often spreads by creeping rhizomes (roots). All stands have vertical and horizontal rhizomes, and young stands have long surface runners that help in rapid expansion of the colony. It is increasing in abundance and distribution throughout Maryland. Some shorelines, drainage ditches and ponds in Ocean Pines are inundated with phragmites. The Ocean Pines Department of Public Works, in collaboration with the OP Environment and Natural Assets Advisory Committee, is undertaking a concerted effort to reduce the proliferation of phragmites in the Pines. Based upon experience obtained in Maryland and other states, the most practical method of controlling phragmites is treating the plants with herbicides approved for aquatic use. Multiple treatments are usually necessary to effectively control a heavy stand. These broad-spectrum herbicides pose no threat to mammals, birds or fish when used according to instructions and applied by a professionally certified technician. Our Public Works

Department presently has two certified individuals. Phragmites can be treated successfully when plants are actively growing and are at mid-to full-bloom (late July–Oct. but before a killing frost). Public Works has begun this effort at the Yacht Club site and will proceed with other sites in future blooming seasons as resources permit. The Environment and Natural Assets Advisory Committee will continue to assist Public Works and to seek grants for native plants to replace the phragmites if needed. The conservation of our natural resources concerns everyone. Many people rely on wetlands resources for their livelihood, recreation and the enjoyment of seeing and experiencing nature. Maryland has lost nearly 45% of its wetlands. We are hopeful that our efforts will arrest and perhaps reverse the aggressive invasion of phragmites in the Pines.

Please Help Save Diamondback Terrapins! The Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore has awarded Maryland Coastal Bays Program (MCBP) a $5,000 community outreach grant for a ghost crab pot/turtle excluder program. Crab pots attract Diamondback Terrapins. Without a turtle excluder, turtles get into the pots to eat the bait and drown because they cannot get out. MCBP volunteers will be contacting local crab pot vendors to see if their pots include turtle excluders, If they do not, volunteers will ask to attach turtle excluders to the pots and include an outreach brochure. Funds from this grant will be spent on expenses to remove abandoned pots in our bays, a brochure and public service announcement on the importance of turtle excluders, and actual turtle excluders. Please get involved! Contact: Sandi at 410.213.2297 x107 or [email protected].

Following the success of its second spring and summer season, the Ocean Pines Farmers Market will, for the first time, operate through the fall and winter. It is the only area fall and winter farmers market scheduled to be open on Saturday mornings. The addition comes at the request of customers and vendors with products suited to the change in seasons. New and current market vendors will be offering fresh produce, breads, homemade items, flowers and more. Originally scheduled to run through October, the fall and winter market will now stay open through the last Saturday of April 2014 from 8am to 12 noon at White Horse Park, located at 239 Ocean Parkway. The OP Farmers Market supports family-based farming, farmers, and food producers of the Eastern Shore. Cutting out the middleman has allowed for direct contact and feedback between customers and producers, giving area residents an opportunity to ask questions and gain knowledge about the food they eat. Vendor applications are being accepted. Visit oceanpines.org for application or call Teresa Travatello at 410.641.7717 ext 3006. oceanpines.org • email: [email protected]

“Festival of Boats” Planned for Summer 2014 The Ocean Pines Boat Club is pleased to announce that, after an absence of several years, a committee has been formed to revive the annual boat parade. Now named “The Festival of Boats,” the boat parade was a signature summer event for many years in Ocean Pines and is tentatively scheduled for July 26, 2014. The activities, which will include both water and shore festivities, will be centered in the South Ocean Pines waters with the thought of alternating north and south in future years. The event is open to all Ocean Pines businesses, all members of the Ocean Pines Chamber of Commerce, all Ocean Pines organizations and individual Ocean Pines boat owners. While it is too early for specifics, it is never too early to start thinking about your participation. It would be greatly appreciated if you would help us determine how much community interest there is in reviving this event. If you, your business or your organization are interested in entering a boat or helping with this event, or if you would like additional information, please contact either Steven Stein at 410.641.8930 ([email protected]) or Fred Heinlen at 410.208.3165 ([email protected]).

House-By-The-Sea on a sight-seeing and fishing trip in the coastal bays of Ocean City. Operated by the Believe In Tomorrow Foundation the home hosts families of children with life threatening illnesses. During that time the Ocean Pines Anglers Club, seeing the value of the program, became involved with additional funding, boats, equipment and volunteers. The Atlantic Coast Chapter of Maryland Saltwater Sportsfisherman Association and Ocean Pines Boat Club also provide funding and Captains to offer these young people and their families a memorable experience on the water. Currently there are 28 Captains, who, combined, average about 30 boating and fishing trips each summer. Over its life the program has introduced well-over 500 children to the joys of fishing, or just watching the ponies on Assateague. Childrens’-House-By-The-Sea Director Wayne Littleton has commented that the fishing and boating activity are one of the most enjoyable experiences offered to the children. The health of the children and desires of the family determine the length of the trips which last anywhere from an hour to all day. There isn’t a volunteer Captain who doesn’t feel that they receive much more out of the program than they give. The smiles on the childrens’ faces are more than enough reward.

Great Time at the Bavarian Hops Match, Sept. 28th The Bavarian Hops Match, created by OP resident and lifetime member Ernie Stiles, is a great day of golf benefitting 2 great causes! The organizers of the match accepted donations for two local charities, Diakonia and Worcester County Humane Society. This year’s results from the event: • All 72 players showed • 2 Skins: Van Der Voosen & Don Schaefer on 6 ( 3/2 ) / Ron Morley & Janet Stoer on 8 (4/3) $150 each skin • Closest to the Pin : Jim Spataro won $50 & honor of the Bavarian Hops Hat • Raised $2580!

COMMUNITY HAPPENINGS

Be a Santa to a Senior® Program

The Delmarva Chorus performed at one of the community’s many 45th Anniversary Celebrations held in August.

Delmarva Chorus Looking for Women! Love To Sing? SWEET! If you love to sing, then we have a place for you! Join us Mondays 7–9pm at the Ocean Pines Community Center. We are on a search, again, to temporarily or permanently find women to sing with us for the Christmas holidays. Come to our guest night on Nov 18th. You will learn all our holiday songs and sing out with us at Berlin Tree Lighting Nov. 29, OP Tree Lighting Nov. 30 and OC Downtown Assoc. Dec. 13. We are a Sweet Adeline group that is continually learning the craft of acappella singing. Join us in our journey in singing and having an awesome time doing it. And remember... NEVER sing in the shower! Singing leads to dancing. Dancing leads to slipping. Slipping leads to paramedics seeing you naked! Instead, get out of that shower, put on your comfy clothes and step up on the risers of the Delmarva Chorus. Call 410.208.3018 for information.

Vintage OP Poster to be Raffled Off The Ocean Pines Players are raffling off a rare Vintage Ocean Pines Poster (circa 1970) to raise money for their Scholarship Fund. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5 and can be purchased in the Community Center Lobby where the poster is on display. The drawing will be held in December. The winner need not be present to win. For more info, call 410.726.2440.

The purpose of the Home Instead Senior Care® community service program, Be a Santa to a Senior®, is to positively impact the community by providing holiday cheer and gift giving to seniors who are least likely to receive a present during the holiday season, are lonely and financially challenged. The local Home Instead Senior Care office is developing a Be a Santa to a Senior partnership committee consisting of community leaders and non-profit organizations. The committee will obtain the names of needy or lonely seniors as well as gift ideas for each senior. Local merchants will place a Christmas tree inside their stores from November 4th through December 6th. Volunteers will write the first name or code name of the participating senior, and their gift preferences, on a Be a Santa to a Senior tree ornament. Each ornament will be placed on the Christmas tree. Merchant customers will pull an ornament from the tree and purchase a gift for the specific senior listed on the ornament. The gifts and corresponding ornament will be grouped together and left in the store. Gift ideas include functional clothing like slippers, socks or gloves. Program volunteers will regularly collect gifts and refresh tree ornaments as needed. The final gifts will be collected on December 9th. Committee members and volunteers will distribute the gifts December 11th – 13th. Christmas tree store locations include Apple Drugs Stores in Berlin, Fruitland, Snow Hill, Salisbury, Berlin, and Salisbury Chambers of Commerce. For more information, call Home Instead Senior Care – Lower Eastern Shore Areas at 410.641.0901 or visit their website at www.homeinstead.com/734.

Mediacom to Hold Town Hall Meeting in OP Ocean Pines will host a town hall meeting with Mediacom representatives on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 6pm at the Ocean Pines Community Center. Members of the Mediacom team will be present including Glenn Bisogno (Director of Area Operations, Mid-Atlantic System Director of Operations), Katie Brinsfield (Admin. Assoc. to Glenn), Pat (Technical OP’s Manager), Tim (Service Supervisor), Mike (Installation Supervisor) and David (HFC/Maintenance Plant Supervisor). All of the representatives will be in attendance to respond to questions and concerns from OP cable subscribers. Homeowners are encouraged to submit questions in advance in order for Mediacom to provide more detailed responses. Questions will also be taken from the floor at the event. Questions and comments may be submitted by email to info@ oceanpines.org, in person at the Ocean Pines Administration building or mailed to Ocean Pines Association, Public Relations, 239 Ocean Parkway, Ocean Pines, MD 21811.

Kiwanis House Number Signs Raise Funds The signs are brown with orange numbers which are placed at the street in front of a house in the Pines to make it more easily seen by a the OP Police and Fire Departments in emergency situations as house numbers are not always readily visible. The sign also makes it easier for anyone to find the house, like visiting relatives and friends. The officially approved Ocean Pines House Number ID Sign is made and sold by Kiwanis for only $15. Also, there are many signs in place all around the Pines that can be re-painted for only $10 when they get weathered, faded and harder to see. To order signs or re-painting, stop by the Ocean Pines Administration Office at White Horse Park and fill out an order form and attach your check made payable to Kiwanis Club (of Greater OP/OC) and deposit in the box just below the sample sign. Your safety is important!

This idiom generally means “you are in a difficult situation in which there are likely to be some dire consequences,” but that is not the case. Actually, you have an opportunity to receive some “cool cash” if you install a high efficiency electric storage water heater. Choptank Electric Cooperative’s new Electric Storage Water Heater Program (ESWHP) is designed to encourage members of the co-op to purchase energy efficient electric storage water heaters instead of conventional or standard units. The ESWHP helps our members overcome the additional cost barriers with rebates toward the purchase of energy efficient electric storage water heaters. After heating and cooling, water heating is the biggest use of energy in your home. From hot showers to dishwashing, a typical household spends an average of $500 per year on heating water. By installing a more energy efficient storage water heater, you can cut costs without cutting daily showers. Whether you’re replacing a worn-out, inadequate or obsolete water heater, or looking for the best model for a new house you’re building, it pays to choose carefully. Storage water heaters, the most common type, work by heating up water in an insulated tank. Heat is lost through the walls of the storage tank (standby heat loss), consuming energy even when you’re not using hot water. New energy efficient storage waters have higher levels of insulation around the tank, substantially reducing standby heat loss and saving you money. The ESWHP offers rebates from $75 to $250 depending on the Energy Factor (EF) of the electric water heater. The EF indicates the water heater’s overall energy efficiency based on the amount of hot water produced per unit of fuel consumed over a typical day. The higher the EF, the more efficient the unit. This includes the following: • Recovery Efficiency – How efficiently the heat from the energy source is transferred to the water

• Standby Losses – The percentage of heat loss per hour from the stored water compared to the heat content of the water (water heaters with storage tanks)

• Cycling Losses – The loss of heat as the water circulates through a water heater tank, and/or inlet and outlet pipes

Visit our website at www.choptankelectric.coop or contact Thomas Tyndall, energy program coordinator at 1.877.892.0001, ext. 8633, for more information about the program. Submitted by Thomas Tyndall, energy program coordinator, Choptank Electric Cooperative

COMMUNITY HAPPENINGS A Historical Donation to Ocean Pines

Pictured above from left: MD Senator Jim Mathias, Sharyn O'Hare, Sheriff Reggie Mason, Ed Little, Marie Gilmore, Comptroller of Maryland Peter Franchot, and MD Delegate Mike McDermott.

Veterans Memorial Award The Worcester County Veterans Memorial at Ocean Pines received the 2nd annual “William Donald Schaefer Helping People Award.” The award was presented by State Comptroller Peter Franchot to Foundation President Marie Gilmore, representing the Board of Directors of the Veterans Memorial Foundation. This award was created two years ago in memory of former Governor and State Comptroller William Donald Schaefer, “to honor those citizens or organizations who have made an impact on their County by improving their community, solving a citizen problem, aiding the most vulnerable or creating a public/private partnership to improve the lives of Marylanders.” The Veterans Memorial Foundation was singled out for its commitment to remembering and honoring the sacrifices of veterans through its Educational Outreach program. Reese F. Cropper, Jr., chairman of the Board of Directors, Calvin B. Taylor Bank, made a presentation to the Ocean Pines Association at its October Board Meeting. On behalf of the Bank, Reese presented the original options/ contracts of sale for those 26 properties that make up most of the Ocean Pines community. The documents were given to Taylor Bank by Raymond D. Coates, Sr., Attorney who closed these sales for original developer, Maryland Marine Properties, Inc., a subsidiary of U. S. Land Co. of Chicago, IL. Shortly thereafter the property was acquired by Boise Cascade. Raymond D. Coates, Sr. felt that those documents belong to Taylor Bank for Reese F. Cropper, Sr. who acted as Escrow Agent because of the wariness of the local sellers dealing with a company from Chicago. Reese stated that his father, who was president of Taylor Bank at the time, held the deeds until the various checks cleared the bank they were written on. Only then did he release the signed deeds for recording. It is interesting to note that all of the properties that are included in these documents were sold for a total of just less that $4 million. The largest amount for one property was $1,487,000.00, the smallest amount was $2,500.00. Reese encouraged the Ocean Pines Association to frame these documents and display them in a public location for the community to enjoy. Reese F. Cropper, Jr. stated, “I am proud that now after 45 years, these documents are home.”

Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast a Great Success!

Crafter of the Month Janet Rosensteel The Pine’eer Craft Club of Ocean Pines has named Janet Rosensteel as the October Crafter of the month. Janet has served as Corresponding Secretary of the Club for the past 6 years. Her handmade items include cards, decorated starfish and Raven and holiday wreaths and ornaments using crab shells. Her items may be seen at the Pine'eer Craft and Gift Shop every Saturday and Sunday, from 10am to 4pm in White Horse Park.

Janet Rosensteel displays her Raven/Oriole wreaths and ornaments.

Successful Kiwanis Duck Race Raises Bucks for Ducks! Friday August 23rd, it was a rainy dreary day perfect for ducks, but it did not daunt the spirits of the nearly 100 spectators, most of whom attended the Roast Pig and Chicken Picnic prior to the race. Kiwanians (L-R) Jim Spicknall and J. Graham Caldwell manned the starting gate and the ducks were off! What a sight, ducks helping to fund scholarships for local graduating senior students each year. Pictured are a couple of the winners. (L-R) Al Morris who won one of the donated gifts, his being a gift certificate from Whiskers Pub in the Pines Plaza and Rita & Dave Landis, winners of the second place prize of $300. In addition to the 3 cash prizes of $1,000, $300, and $200, there were 26 donated prizes awarded.

Mustered out front are some of the "kiwanis-Cakes" team (L - R) Ron Graybill, Charlie Warner, Mary Logisz, Jane Slotter, co-chairs Stella Hartington and Carolyn Dryzga, Past President Barb Peletier, George Wayson, Terry Chuvala, Lee Brooke, Tom Southwell and Joe Logisz.

A great amount of effort goes into raising money to support the programs of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines–Ocean City, but a greater amount of satisfaction and reward is received from the support of the community. They served a “Full House” in the Ocean Pines Community center gym for the July 13th Pancake Breakfast. The kitchen workers and servers were there before the 8:00am start to be sure everything was ready. Some of the kitchen crew (pictured right), seen working in the pretty “warm” kitchen, are Phil Lassiter, Ed Aurand, Ralph Chinn and Bob Fralley. Of the 63 member club, 81% participated in some way with the event. Lots of involvement for a great cause to benefit the youth of the community. A big THANK YOU to all that supported and continue to support the local Kiwanis Club.

Wreaths Across America 2014 The Worcester County Veterans Memorial continues its mission to Honor, Remember and Teach. The Wreaths Across America program places a wreath at the grave sites of veterans in over 350 veterans cemeteries across the country. Our program supports the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery at Hurlock, Maryland. We will be placing wreaths at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery on December 14th at 10am. This cemetery currently has over 8,500 grave sites. Last year, our best year yet, 1,200 graves were covered. It is our mission to help cover the entire cemetery. You can help by sponsoring a wreath for just $15. Visit www.OPVETS.com, click on the Wreaths Across America link on the Home page. Print the form and mail to: WCVMF, P.O. Star Charities Presents Proceeds from Wounded Veterans Fundraiser On September 20th, Star Charities held a well attended and successful fundraiser to benefit Wounded Veterans in Maryland. Through the wonderful support of the public, the donations by the caterer, Monty Jones of Lazy River Saloon at Frontier Town, the entertainers, namely the Still Rocking Band and The Bayside Strummers, and the donation back of his 50-50 raffle winnings by State Senator Jim Mathias, $1700 was raised. On October 18th the proceeds were presented in the Ocean Pines Library. Commander Lewis was most appreciative of the funds which are used for Maryland Wounded Veterans, as was the case this past summer when two buses full of 75 veterans from Walter Reed Hospital and other Veteran's hospitals in Maryland, along with some of their families, came to Ocean City in early June. Great work for a great cause. Thank you to all who helped! oceanpines.org • email: [email protected]

PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT

leaf or yard debris only. When bagging, please use paper bags, which is preferred, or use plastic bags but they will have to be dumped out. For more info, call 410.641.7425 or email [email protected].

OP Leaf Clean Up Options Bag Leaves for Pickup with Waste Management, Anytime: WM customers can have up to 4 bags of leaves each pickup in addition to trash pickup. We encourage customers of WM to remove up to 8 bags/week in paper or plastic bags. On the South Side of Rt. 90 bridge, WM pickups are Tuesdays and Fridays. On the North Side of Rt. 90 bridge, WM pickups are Mondays and Thursdays. Bagged Leaves Curbside Pickup Begins Nov. 18: Running in sections opposite days of the WM trash trucks, OP Public Works will be collecting any amount of bagged leaves on the North or South side for all residents. In addition, branches will be picked up if tied in bundles limited to 4’ long. Please use paper bags when possible. Paper bags are biodegradable and cost much less to remove. Paper bags are for sale at the Public Works and Admin. Office for $1 each or you can purchase at a department store. Ditch Leaves Vacuum Pickup Begins Nov. 25: Public Works will be making the rounds in the leaf vacuum truck to collect loose leaves you rack from your ditch. If you rake just your ditch out to the street, Public Works will pick them up with the vacuum truck. There is no schedule for this option so bagging the leaves is better to keep them in place until the vacuum truck is in your section. Remember the vacuum truck is for leaves in your ditch only so please do not rack you whole yard in the ditch or discard sticks and other yard debris in the leaves collected from the ditches. Bring Your Leaves to Us! OP Public Works Yard beside the recycle containers behind the Southside Fire Station, Mon–Sat, Nov. 18–Dec. 21 (closed Thanksgiving Day) 7–4pm for bagged or bulk

Expect Delays on King Richard Due to Construction Worcester County Public Works officials advise the public to expect traffic delays on King Richard Road through late November, as construction crews make the following repairs: Replacing water service lines over the next three weeks, to eliminate leaks that have caused excessive maintenance in other areas of the OP system. Installing a 6” diameter sewage force main to connect the Casino to the OP Wastewater System. It is the intention of the contractor to maintain one active lane of traffic during the construction on King Richard Rd. Complete road closures will be avoided during construction unless absolutely necessary. Reconstructing and repaving King Richard Rd. Public Works officials hope to limit disruptions to the public by performing these activities concurrently. Anyone with specific concerns may contact Public Works Deputy Director John Ross or Construction Technician Mike McCabe at the Dept. of Public Works Water & Wastewater Division at 410.641.5251.

OP Tennis Davis Cup 2013 Winners Closing Meeting/Block Party Held On Sept. 29th Approximately 30 Members attended. The Men’s Flight Finals preceded the Meeting/Block Party. The Flight Final was won by Don Tomb. Congratulations to Don and the other finalists, Rick Lang, Lou Rixham, and Dale Ash. I opened the Meeting with a few remarks including: Comments on the successful Drop-In program, Flight Programs, and Special Events such as the Pink Ribbon Charity Event, Davis Cups, and Points of Compass. I also commented on the increased emphasis of evolving to a notion of a Racquet Sports Center vs a Tennis Center, with closer integration and cooperation between Platform Tennis, Pickleball and Tennis. A Master Plan for the Manklin Park Recreation area has been drawn up and presented to the OPA Board of Directors. The Plan highlights: adding 2 Platform Tennis Courts, 6 Pickle Ball Courts, increased parking, and ideas on the refurbishment or replacement of the Club House facility. It is possible we will see some of these plans coming to fruition beginning with the 2014 Playing Season. Mitzi Ash presented the Treasurer's Report. To summarize, we began the 2013 Season with $1765 in the treasury, and ended the Season with $1187. Ron Kerchner made more detailed comments regarding the Special Events, recognizing all the winning teams and individuals. Nomination and election of OPTC Officers for the 2014 Season was completed. Mitzi Ash was nominated and elected to continue as Treasurer. Leslie Shippee was nominated and elected Vice President. John McNult was nominated and elected to continue as President. Mitzi Ash presented cash awards to the Staff, Ron Kerchner, George Eitel, Jonathan, and Kyle on behalf of OPTC in appreciation for their service during the 2013 Season. Mitzi also presented a cash award to John McNult for service as President. Ron recognized the Flight winners and presented awards to the two present, Dale Ash and Don Tomb. I failed to take note of all the other winners names, my apologies for not listing them. Meeting was closed. We enjoyed a few rounds of Round Robin doubles followed by hot dogs, burgers, beverages, and other goodies. Special Thanks to Dave Marshall for attending the event and graciously providing and grilling the dogs and burgers. Thanks to all helping to set-up and clean-up. Submitted by John McNult

Ghost Prevail Over Goblins Ocean Pines Platform Tennis held its annual fall tournament on October 19. With 60 sign-ups, it was the largest tournament turnout ever! In celebration of Halloween, the theme was Ghost vs. Goblins. Pumpkins, streamers, mums and flying ghosts and goblins filled the court areas and the clubhouse. Each competitor played a total of 3 separate matches for 25 minutes each. All 4 courts were surrounded by cheering spectators. It was a close match between the Ghosts and Goblins, but near the end the Ghosts pulled ahead and the final score was 180 to 152. Tom and Megan Herrick did a spectacular job of organizing the event, decorating and planning and the luncheon menu. Other committee members included Cathy and Scott Wheatley, Ron Ferger, Julie Woulfe, Jim and June Freeman, Jim Wahl, Linda Horst and Dot Waters. Lunch leftovers were donated to Diakonia.
