As astonishing as the photos in National Geographic. And an exhilarating life adventure: A Lindblad-National Geographic expedition— a complete experience in a thrilling geography.

TM

Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic have joined forces to further inspire the world through expedition travel. Our collaboration in exploration, research, technology and conservation will provide extraordinary travel experiences and disseminate geographic knowledge around the globe.

Dear Traveler, The 21st century will be the most exciting century ever for exploration. These sentiments phrased in many different ways were echoed over and over at National Geographic’s 125th year celebration where a thousand people gathered at the grand National Building Museum on June 13th in Washington, DC. We were there to honor an institution and individuals who so nobly represent what National Geographic stands for. In his opening remarks, John Fahey, the Chairman and CEO of National Geographic, said, referring to exploration:

From left: E.O. Wilson, Sven Lindblad, David Shaw, at the National Geographic Society’s 125 Anniversary Gala where E.O. Wilson was awarded the 2013 Hubbard Medal, the National Geographic Society’s highest honor—for distinction in exploration, discovery, and research.

“Today we have the same goals, but our explorers—and those like you who support them—are driven by a deeper purpose. In this new Age of Exploration, they want to help navigate the increasingly complex relationship between humanity’s needs and the natural world that sustains us.” Many of these explorers have become, over the years, very close friends and I’d like to amplify what John said in his remarks. I’m talking about men and women who have dedicated their lives to exploring and understanding the ocean, the forests and the grasslands of Africa, or the ice realms of the poles. They have seen and they know so much and now in the 21st century what they seek more than anything, what they believe is the essential ingredient for hope, is exponentially increasing the level of knowledge and understanding for as many of us as possible. We are all explorers at heart. We indeed have an increasingly more complex relationship with our planet. We need to better understand and appreciate the wonder and the threat inherent in this relationship. So, for you, for them, for all creatures that inhabit the earth—let’s EXPLORE, become inspired and then find creative ways together to improve and rebalance our tenuous relationship with our one home, our special and beautiful planet. Yours sincerely,

Baja California Easily one of the great treasures of the northern hemisphere, Baja California presents the chance to encounter the exhilarating living sea. Soak up the sun in the Sea of Cortez and snorkel with playful sea lions. Hike through cactus forests on idyllic isles. Or meet the gray whales during their annual winter respite from mid-January through March. Be sure to pack your camera—the photo ops are fantastic!

Antarctica For a brief period each year Antarctica, the coldest, windiest, driest, highest, most desolate place on Earth catches a break. For the short austral summer, Antarctica is one of Earth’s most welcoming sights, displaying its wonders—an unimaginable beauty and bounty of life. In this shining season a new set of superlatives apply. The most fascinating penguin behavior. The grandest icescapes. The most riveting exploration history. In this short time between polar night and day, a region that’s unequivocally inhospitable turns into one of the premier destinations that any adventurous traveler can visit.

Upper Amazon Far from the ordinary lie the pristine headwaters of the Amazon, source of the hemisphere’s mightiest river. We’ll explore the labyrinth of tributaries and lush riverscapes of Peru’s Pacaya-Samiria Reserve, spotting pink river dolphins, myriad wildlife, and visiting ribereños’ villages. Life aboard Delfin II, the finest ship on the river, is tropical style at its best: beautifully appointed, with haute Peruvian cuisine.

Epic Adventure

Among the planet’s marvels our ships explore each year, few regions and few itineraries rival these. Patagonia, with its imposing natural barriers and lack of tourist infrastructure put this land well beyond the scope of most travelers. The storied coast of South America, from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Salvador, Brazil, is a region rife with glittering cities, beaches, and rain forest wildlife. And the grand tall ship Sea Cloud, with its storied history is a veritable destination in itself, sailing aboard her a life-list must.

Patagonia Saw-toothed peaks, a maze of channels, towering fjords, and remote glacial lakes in unearthly hues of green and blue. This wild land, shrouded in mystery, has always been largely inaccessible. Go deep and explore up close aboard National Geographic Explorer venturing to protected parklands and private reserves accessible only by special permission we’ve arranged.

» See page 28.

Buenos Aires, Rio & Brazil’s Wild Coast Urbanity and elegance in Rio, Montevideo, and Buenos Aires. Colonial capitals that boomed with the cacao and gold trade and now mix history with a samba-tinged modernity. Go beyond the intoxicating beaches and green-shrouded mountains to explore a region few travelers know—the diverse wildlife of the Atlantic rain forest and a thriving ocean environment.

» See page 26.

Sea Cloud in the Caribbean The famous trade winds and the incomparable Sea Cloud: a marriage made in heaven, sure to awaken the sailor’s heart in every traveler. Sea Cloud is a destination that moves—wending its stately way through idyllic isles. Savor golden age elegance in our comfortably casual style. This is a bucket list-worthy experience.

Discover the balance of pure wildness in Costa Rica with the busy Panama Canal. The mute ruins and monuments of Machu Picchu and the vibrancy of contemporary Peru. The history of Lewis & Clark’s famous expedition and the modern culinary culture of the Pacific Northwest. Experience how vital and alive these places are where the past informs the present.

Costa Rica & The Panama Canal Discover the pure wildness of Costa Rica’s rain forests and Panama’s pristine, protected islands, and transit a man-made wonder, the Panama Canal, where you’ll enjoy special access to the Smithsonian research institute on Barro Colorado Island in the Canal’s Gatún Lake. Add an extension to the Monteverde Cloud Forest or Arenal Volcano and Sarapiquí, and experience Costa Rica’s many inland dimensions.

» See pages 22-25.

Upper Amazon 10 DAYS/9 NIGHTS—Aboard delfin II

Experience & Expertise

PRICES FROM: $5,870 to $6,990 (See page 45 for complete details.)

We have conducted numerous Amazon expeditions in our history, and launched our first expedition voyage aboard the beautiful, 28-guest Delfin II in August 2010. In order to provide expedition leadership in this pristine region, we tapped our tenured expedition leaders to lead our Amazon voyages, providing our guests with the same in-depth interpretation they find on our other expeditions. Our veteran team is highly knowledgeable about this locale, and trained to illuminate all the discoveries you’ll make.

Voyage to the headwaters of the mighty Amazon in the heart of Peru’s rain forest aboard the elegant riverboat Delfin II. Slip through an intricate network of jungle waterways in a skiff or kayak, spotting hundreds of bird species, as well as caimans, tamarins, and sloths. Skim past massive lily pads, peer up at towering ceiba trees, and witness glorious sunsets on the still waters of the Amazon River basin.

Expedition Highlights ▶▶ Explore the tannin-rich lakes of the flooded forest of Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve with a team of experienced naturalists. ▶▶ Spot legendary wildlife of the Amazon, including pink and gray dolphins, monk saki monkeys, piranhas, and scarlet macaws. ▶▶ Get acquainted with native ribereños on a visit to a community on the river’s edge. ▶▶ Gaze at the wilderness from the comfort of the Delfin II, and enjoy delicious, local meals prepared by our onboard chef.

Day 2: Lima/Iquitos/Nauta Enjoy a morning tour of Lima, then fly to Iquitos and continue overland to the riverside village of Nauta, where the Delfin II awaits. Settle into your cabin, and gather for a welcome dinner of fine Peruvian cuisine on board. Tonight, step out on deck to gaze at the magnificent Amazon night sky. (B,L,D) Days 3–8: Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve Spend this week exploring the PacayaSamiria National Reserve, a pristine swath of jungle—one of the largest in South America— stretching more than five million acres, and harboring some of the Amazon’s most fascinating flora and fauna. Bordered by the Marañón and the Ucayali, two powerful rivers that converge to create the famed Amazon, the reserve floods annually with nutrient-rich waters and is known locally as the Mirrored Forest for the reflections created by its glassy water. Set out into this remarkable wilderness on daily excursions by skiff, kayak, and, when the water level permits, hikes on terra firma. Skim past giant lily pads afloat on tannin-rich lakes, and venture deep into the rain forest on narrow tributaries. Spot sloths and monkeys, including variably colored saddleback tamarins, noisy howlers, and shaggy-tailed monk saki monkeys. Watch for an astounding variety of birds, from

tanagers and hummingbirds to parrots and endangered scarlet macaws. In the river, look for rare pink dolphins, and the infamous piranhas. Enjoy an opportunity to swim in a lake in the reserve’s interior. Seek out Victoria amazonica, a giant water lily that grows in small lagoons. Go on a bird-watching hike, listening for the vocal oropendola and then looking for its telltale yellow tail. Watch the sun set and listen to a cacophonous symphony of nocturnal animals calling out across the treetops. Then slip through the forest in a skiff as night falls, using a spotlight to find caimans, frogs, fishing bats, and other creatures of the night. Pay a visit to one of the communities on the reserve’s edge and get to know the ribereños, those who live on the riverbanks, and their age-old traditions. Meet local women and children, and watch them make jewelry and other handicrafts. Learn how local subsistence farmers cultivate wild plants and trees to earn income. Hear about how the locals find edible fruits and indigenous plants with medicinal properties hidden in the jungle. (B,L,D DAILY) Day 9: Nauta/Iquitos/Lima Enjoy one last morning excursion by skiff to view wildlife. After lunch, disembark in Nauta, and return to Iquitos overland for a lateafternoon flight to Lima, and overnight at the Costa del Sol Ramada. (B,L) Day 10: Lima/U.S. After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight home. (B)

TERMS & CONDITIONS Reservations: To reserve your place, an advance payment is required at the time of reservation. The per person advance payment amount varies by program, and is outlined in our brochures, as well as on our website. Payment is accepted by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, or by check. Receipt of your initial payment indicates your acceptance of our complete Terms and Conditions. We require written notice at the time of reservation for any physical condition, diet, or treatment requiring special attention. Once your reservation is confirmed, we urge you to use your personalized online account for important information to help you prepare for your voyage. Managing your documents online will facilitate fast and accurate communication, and allow you to provide us with pertinent details we require, in order to complete your reservation. Your online account gives you access to your Expedition Guide, which includes valuable information specific to your voyage. You can also use your online account to make easy payments, view recommended flights and reading material, packing list, and so much more. Final Payment: For expeditions of eight nights or less, final payment is due 60 days prior to departure. For expeditions of nine nights or more, final payment is due 90 days prior to departure. By registering for a trip, the guest agrees to all such terms and conditions. Note: Itineraries and prices listed in this brochure are valid as of publication date, and are subject to change. Under normal conditions, the total expedition cost is guaranteed at the time of booking. However, the published price is determined far in advance of initial departure on the basis of then-existing projections of fuel and other costs. In the event we determine that current costs create an unsustainable financial model, including but not limited to increases in the price of fuel, currency fluctuations, increases in government taxes or levies, or increased security costs, we reserve the right to pass on these costs to you, to cover such unexpected increases. We will always provide a transparent accounting of the reason for such an increase in costs.
