Welcome To The Center July 1, 2017 Dear Friends, Welcome to the Community Services Center! The Center is a non-profit organization that offers professional counseling, classes and tours, cross-cultural training, and information services to meet the needs of the international community living in Taiwan.
Registration Information Advance registration and payment is required for all Center activities. Registration may be done by phone, email, online or in person. For online registration please go to the Center’s website: http://www.communitycenter. org.tw
Through our activities program, we offer you the opportunity to explore the local culture, learn new skills and meet others with similar interests. We have many great activities for you to join this fall-from Taiwanese cooking and yoga classes to neighborhood foodie tours and mountain hikes.
Payment for most activities is due at least one week prior to the start or actual date. Some classes requiring special arrangements may require earlier payment. Should a class become fully subscribed and a wait list created, payment will be due upon request.
If you are new to Taiwan, you might want to consider joining one of our Survival Chinese language classes. These classes are designed to help you quickly learn some of the phrases and vocabulary you need to shop, get around town and eat in local restaurants. They are also a great way to connect with other newcomers.
Please note that we cannot guarantee your place until full payment is made. Non-payment when requested will result in the cancellation of your registration.
Whether you’ve been here for six days, six weeks or six years, the Center is here for you. Please take a look through this catalog and sign up for a class or two—or three, four or five! We hope to see you at the Center soon!
Center office hours are Monday - Friday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. Cancellations The Center reserves the right to cancel any activity or program that does not have sufficient enrollment. We make every effort to notify registered participants promptly. Refund and Credit Policy Activities cancelled by the Center: • Full refund will be issued. Refunds may be collected until the last day of the semester. Cancellations due to Taipei city/government closures, i.e. typhoon days, are exempt from this policy.

P.S. On September 7th we will host our annual Welcome Coffee and Open House where you can meet Center staff and instructors as well as fellow expats. Come and learn all about the Center’s programs. No registration required.

Bright, colorful and noisy, the Shi Dong Market is the place for all your produce needs. Join Ivy and learn some helpful hints and tips on what to buy, where to buy it, and how to be sure it's fresh. Ivy will also show you how to select fresh fish, seafood and other items of interest. Time permitting, this informative tour may include stops at various smaller area markets.

Mount Datun, the third highest peak in Yangmingshan, offers one of the finest views in the National Park but is far less popular than nearby Seven Star Mountain (Mt. Qixing). This hike climbs the mountain from the north, descends to the grassy plains of Erziping, and then continues southwards all the way to Beitou. If there's time we'll detour to the small but well-preserved volcanic crater at Towards Heaven Pond. The hike, completely on surfaced paths, has many steps, some steep, but is suitable for walkers who are comfortable climbing the Tianmu steps. Sturdy walking/hiking shoes are a must. Bring water, a packed lunch and rain/sun protection as needed. This hike ends at the Beitou MRT Station by 2:00pm.
Anne Jacquet and Center Staff
You've found a place to live; work and school have started. What next? Join the Center's Newcomer Orientation Workshop for a fast-paced and fun introduction to living in Taiwan and learn what you need to know to help smooth the way as you settle into your new life. This half-day workshop is full of helpful hints, stories and useful information. Topics covered will include: practical daily life tips; typhoon, earthquake and disaster awareness; health and medical information; and, understanding the local culture. For those who would like to stay afterwards and chat with Center staff, a local lunch will be available for purchase at an additional cost of NT$300.
Bridget Chi
Have you ever felt daunted by the thought of spending a day at the National Palace Museum? Do you find the myriad of objects and crowds at the museum bewildering? Join Bridget, who has a background in art history and is keen to share her passion, to unravel the mysteries of the NPM and become an old hand when guests come into town asking for a tour. This will be an interactive visit to view some of the quintessential objects that define the museum. Bridget will also set the objects in their historical context, delve into the hidden symbolism of Chinese art objects and share some fun trivia about the NPM s collections. Cost of museum admission included.

Yangmingshan National Park is not far from Taipei’s busy streets and is a lovely place to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. If you haven’t yet ventured there, then here’s your chance. Starting from the Jiantan MRT we will take a local bus up the mountain to Qingtiangang (aka Buffalo Meadow as expats know it), the high (800 meters-plus) grassy meadows just east of Mount Qixing, the highest peak in Yangmingshan. This short circular walk makes a loop around the meadows, taking in the summit of Mount Zhugao, lots of panoramic views, and of course the beautiful grasslands themselves. This is a fairly short hike, suitable for all regular walkers, almost entirely on stone-surfaced paths, with steps and several moderate but fairly short climbs. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring water, snacks, your Easy Card or change for the bus fares, and sun/rain protection (a raincoat is preferable to an umbrella), as required.

On any given street corner, lane or alley you will find a restaurant, food stall or market with delicacies to tempt your palate. But, with so much to choose from--where do you start? This tasty tour with Ivy, our resident foodie, includes stops at a selection of small shops, vendors, and eateries as well as at one of the city’s oldest coffee shops. By the end of this tour you will be on your way to becoming a true connoisseur of eating Taiwanese! Cost of tastings included. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a hearty appetite! Filial Son, Loving Mother and Putuo Mountains are bizarre whaleback rock formations jutting out of the jungle above the village of Pingxi on the headwaters of the Keelung River. Made accessible to walkers after a former KMT soldier painstakingly cut steps out of the bare rock in the side of each peak, this is one of the most extraordinary and scenic walks in the Taipei area, and one of the most popular, since the ascents were made safer with better handrails. The ascents of all three peaks are safe, very short (each about five minutes), and suitable for all regular hikers, but a good head for heights is essential. Participants can skip one or all of the peaks if they wish, as we return to the same point after each. This hike ends back at the Muzha MRT Station. Suitable footwear with a good grip is essential on this trip. Bring sun/rain protection, plus your Easy-Card for the bus.

As a foreigner living in Taiwan, you may have faced situations that are culturally puzzling, surprising and maybe even incomprehensible. When faced with an unexpected situation, you may have not known how to properly respond to a friend, supervisor or co-worker. Understanding the local culture and being aware of the differences between your host country friends and associates and your own values and beliefs can be the key to your success in an expatriate posting. Led by Anne, the Center’s Cross Cultural Trainer, this informative and interactive workshop will accelerate your understanding of Taiwanese culture; help you to better understand your Taiwanese friends and colleagues and build constructive relationships with them; and, equip you with effective communication strategies.
Jennifer Tong
Join Jennifer for a fun and interesting visit to one of Yingge’s oldest pottery makers. Have you ever wanted to learn how to crochet? Well, then join Maria for this introductory workshop where she will teach you the basics of crocheting. In this beginner class you will learn how to make "granny squares," which can be stitched together to create any number of items from simple scarves to small blankets and afghans. Take this class and you will be on your way to creating a lovely item made by your own hands. Cost of materials to make approximately six granny squares included.
Marie Correia
In this fun, hands-on crocheting workshop Maria will teach you how to make a lovely and warm winter hat for an adult, toddler or infant. If you have some basic crocheting skills or have recently taken our Beginner's Workshop, then this class is suitable for you. These hats make great gifts for the not too distant holidays. Cost of materials to complete your hat included.
Miyuki Boice
Furoshiki is a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth originally used in ancient time. By employing techniques similar to origami, the art of furoshiki is an elegant and eco-friendly way to wrap gifts, carry groceries or almost anything—from books and boxes to bottles and plants. In this two-session class, Miyuki will teach you how to determine the correct fabric size for an item you wish to wrap; proper folding and knot tying techniques; what types of items work well with furoshiki; how to make a simple furoshiki carry bag; and offer travel tips for using furoshiki. A short list of items to bring from home will be provided. Cost of fabric and a genuine Japanese furoshiki included.
Jennifer Tong
This class is an introduction to the traditional style of Chinese writing using brush and ink. Jennifer will instruct you on the correct way to hold the brush and maneuver it to produce beautiful results. If you've taken calligraphy or brush painting before, Jennifer will work with you to improve your technique and form. Cost of all materials included.
Mai Katsutani
During the first half of this fun, hands-on workshop Mai will teach you how to carve and make your own Christmas holiday stamps, which you can use to decorate cards, gift tags, wrapping paper, and more. Most people think that learning to read and write Chinese is either not necessary for their short time in Taiwan or just too difficult to attempt. However, in this course, Gloria proves that both of these misconceptions are wrong. By teaching you about the root of each character and how the characters are built, you will discover that learning Chinese characters actually helps you to improve your understanding of the spoken language. So, don’t be afraid, sign up for this full-semester reading and writing class. Prerequisites: completion of our Survival Chinese series or at least 40-60 hours of Chinese language instruction. Course books to be purchased at an additional cost.
Gloria Gwo
This full-semester class will focus on using and practicing what you have already learned in Survival I, II and III to help you advance in your study of spoken Chinese. The class will also improve your listening skills through the use of recorded materials. New topics such as ordering food in restaurants, going to the doctor or dentist, and many other daily life activities will be introduced. Classroom time will be supplemented with occasional outings to local shops, restaurants and businesses. Sound like fun? Then sign up and join this practical, task-based class. Prerequisites: Survival Chinese I, II and III or completed approximately 40-60 hours of language instruction.
