FANTUNES 2♣ OPENING Author: Simon Gottschalk Created: 23/08/2012; Last Updated: 30/08/2013 1. Introduction The original Precision 2♣ opening showed a hand of 11-15 hcp with at least 5 clubs. If only 5 clubs were held, then a 4 card major was promised. The 2♣ opening holding a 5 card club suit was viewed as a weak part of the system, and partnerships changed the requirement to a 6+ card club suit. This certainly removed all weakness from the 2♣ opening bid, but tended to overload the 1♦ opening bid. Maybe the responses were not well enough developed! 2. Recent Developments Bridge technology moves on and world champions Fantoni & Nunes (FANTUNES) in their system use a 2♣ opening bid to show 10-13hcp with 6+♣, or a 3415 shape (5♣ with the rest of the shape in any of the three suits). The FANTUNES responses to 2♣ are as follows: 2♦ by an un-passed hand is a relay with at least invitational values. Then 2♥ shows at least 3♥ and denies 4♠ with 5+♣ 2♠ shows at least 3♠ and not 4♥, note that if 3♥ held then will have 4♠ 2NT shows 6♣ with a maximum and is GF, but with no 3 card major (with poor 3 card major and strong ♣, the major can be ignored). 3♣ shows 6♣ with a minimum, but with no 3 card major 3♦ shows 6♣ 4♦ with a maximum 3♥ shows 0445 shape 3♠ shows 4045 shape After the sequence 2♣ 2♦; 2NT (maximum with 6♣) then 3♣ is agrees clubs and is GF 3♦♥♠ show 5+ card suits GF After the sequence 2♣ 2♦; 3♣ (minimum with 6♣) then 3♦ is a GF relay, opener can show stops for NT purposes After the sequence 2♣ 2♦; 2♥ then 2NT asks for more information. 3♣ shows 6♣ 3♦ shows 4♦ in a 1345 hand 3♥ shows a 1435 shape 3♠ shows a 3415 shape 3NT shows 4405 shape After the sequence 2♣ 2♦; 2♠ then 2NT asks for more information. 3♣ shows 6♣ 3♦ shows 4♦ in a 3145 hand 3♥ shows a 4315 shape 3♠ shows a 4135 shape Note that in FANTUNES a 22(4)5 shape will be opened 1NT (12-14).
