WiSE Hosts “Go Red for Women” Seminar Women in Shipbuilding Enterprise (WiSE) hosted a “Go Red for Women” seminar on Feb. 7 in conjunction with February’s American Heart Month. Julia Spruill, a nurse practitioner in the Advanced Heart and Failure Program at Sentara Hospital, was the guest speaker at the event and spoke about the need to raise awareness and hold discussions about heart disease. Spruill said, “As women, we need to make sure that we are the strongest advocates for our health care. If you know you are not feeling well, it is ok to challenge your medical team to keep testing, and if necessary, to get a second opinion -- it could save your life.” WiSE Vice Chairperson Linda McMillian (O22) said, “Getting educated about heart disease is the first step to prevention and saving a loved one. After attending the ‘Go Red for Women’ seminar, it made me sad

because if I had been educated about the symptoms of a heart attack earlier in my life, I may have been able to save my mom who died of a heart attack. Now that I know what symptoms to look for, I can save my own life as well as other loved ones.” WiSE would like to encourage all shipbuilders to take advantage of the free blood pressure check HealthWaves is offering through their “Pressure Points version 2.0” program. HealthWaves is able to attend staff meetings, group lunches, and take walk-in screenings. Shipbuilders interested in the program should send an email to

NNS Holds Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for the CTB Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) opened the doors to the Consolidated Trades Building (CTB) on Tuesday, Feb. 5. Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, shipbuilders were given the opportunity to tour the new facility, which will house members of the Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH) team. “I think it is a big step toward engaging the leadership and working together to continue the RCOH program as truly one of the best programs in the Navy, as well as submarines and aircraft carriers,” said NNS President Matt Mulherin. Automation of NNS’ Main Phone Line Beginning Feb. 18, Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) will automate the switchboard for the company’s main information telephone number (757) 380-2000 and Information Line, (757) 380-4591. The phone line is being modernized not only to be more cost effective, but because it is a more efficient way of routing calls. As technology has changed, many of the tasks that were performed by the telephone switchboard operators are now being handled directly by employees or administrative assistants.
The new automated system will be available 24/7 and will provide callers with a menu of eight options to assist in routing the call to the desired person or department at NNS and Huntington Ingalls Industries. Emergency calls will be transferred to the Security Communications Center and answered by a Security technician. For more information about the switchboard changes, view the FAQS, on Yardnet.

Beginning Feb. 14, the shuttle will pick-up and drop-off shipbuilders in the North Yard, at the 50th St. gate and the two locations in the Hidens North parking lot. Read what NNS shipbuilders had to say about their “Couch to 5K” experience last year: “Enjoyed the Wednesday runs at the Noland Trail. They got me out of the house for running and walking that I probably wouldn’t have done if it wasn’t for the Couch to 5K. It was a workout for a non-runner.” “I really enjoyed the training. It was beneficial in preparing me for race day.” “This was an excellent program! I’m looking forward to the opportunity to participate in both the program and race this year!” “Couch to 5K was a good training program. It gave individuals a chance to prepare for a 5K, whether it was their first time or a pro. I really enjoyed it and I enjoyed the people I met.”
