Students Learn the Ins and Outs of STEM During Engineering Career Days Newport News Shipbuilding tested the engineering know-how of about 600 high school students during Engineering Career Day events on February 20-21 in partnership with NASA Langley Research Center, Jefferson Lab and the Peninsula Engineers Council. Chief Engineer Charles Southall shared with the sophomores and juniors some experiences he has enjoyed as a result of his career. He talked about the thrill of riding sea trials on the submarine USS Minnesota (SSN 783) and the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) and playing a role in the floating of the aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78). “This is a phenomenal... Continued on p. 4

Ford Welders Recognized for 762 Accident-Free Days Eleven welders working on Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) were recognized on February 6 for going 762 days accident-free. In honor of their accomplishment, the team celebrated with a pizza party during lunch. “This crew works in Ford’s engine room and down in the reactors,” said X88 General Foreman Ronald Mull. “They are consistently working in small and tight working spaces on the ship, so going accident-free for more than two years is quite an accomplishment. I couldn’t be more proud of this crew – it means a lot to know that they are paying attention, looking out for one... Continued on p. 2 Feb. 24 - 28, 2014

Shipbuilders Attend AASA’s Black History Month Event The African American Shipbuilders Association (AASA) hosted its annual Black History Month Celebration on February 20 in the James River Room of Bldg 520. The evening’s theme of art, music and inspiration was “Paying It Forward, As We Continue the Dream.” Guest speaker, Rev. Dr. Dwight Riddick of Gethsemane Baptist Church in Newport News, talked about the sacrifices of past shipbuilders and other African Americans that paved the way for future generations to succeed. The celebration opened with an inspirational spoken word presentation by Rochelle Robbins (O93) and included several musical selections. An art exhibit showcased the talents of 14 artists including shipbuilders, their family members and friends. “Everyone seemed to leave the event energized and uplifted,” said AASA member Roslyn Long, (E83). “Most people attending summed up their feelings about the evening in one word, ‘fantastic.’”

Pipe Fitters Recognized for Safety Milestone Ten pipe fitters working on Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) were recognized on February 11 for performing more than three years without an accident. The crew is responsible for installing sprinkler systems, working in tanks, compartment completion and miscellaneous piping systems on Ford. To celebrate the safety accomplishment, the crew was treated to a special luncheon. “You all have accomplished this milestone together as a team and I appreciate your hard work,” said X42 General Foreman K.C. Keeter. “You guys talk about safety often and you ask questions when you don’t understand something – but most importantly, you make it a priority to watch out for yourself and your fellow shipbuilders.” Lead Superintendent Donald Suits congratulated the team on their safety milestone and also applauded them on

their quality of work. “One day years from today, you will be listening to the news and hear that Ford is going overseas to help people,” said Suits. “I want you to think back at the work you are doing right now on this ship and know that you completed all your jobs to the best of your ability – good, honest and safe work. I’m very proud of this team and I challenge you to go another 365 days without an accident.”

NEW! Check Out Focus NNS The latest episode of Focus NNS takes a look at the safest year in shipyard history and why 2013 was such a good year. It also welcome a new company that will help bolster Newport News Shipbuilding’s venture into the energy

arena and looks at what’s ahead as it gets closer to the christening of John Warner (SSN 785) this summer. Visit Yardnet to watch the full episode of Focus NNS.

their job right.” Howard Blume (X18), has worked at Newport News Shipbuilding for 12 years. “I think our team’s safety successes come from a combination of things,” said Blume. “We have ‘Take Five’ talks each morning, which help us to not to become complacent in our work environment. We also communicate and look out for each other on a regular basis.” Justin Smith (X18), one of the newest members of the team added, “The shipbuilders with more experience on our crew help guide and watch out for the younger shipbuilders. It means a lot to know that the people I work with care about my safety.”

Foreman William Lemons is proud of his crew not only for their safety successes, but also for their quality work. “This crew not only works safe, they also perform quality work,” said Lemons. “Their safety record proves that safety and quality go hand in hand. I hope to celebrate another accident free year with this crew one year from now.”

Detail Pipe Shop Celebrates Accident-Free Safety Records On February 7, more than 100 Detail Pipe Shop craftsmen who had an accident-free safety record in 2013 were recognized by division leadership with a spaghetti lunch. “Thanks to each of you for leading your crews to an accident-free safety record last year,” said Andy Green, vice president of Component Fabrication and Assembly. “This accomplishment is a great reflection on each of you as leaders in this shop. I’m grateful that I can count on you to encourage safe behavior so that our shipbuilders can return home to their families the same way they came to work.” Pipe Fitter Terry Gray serves as a make-up foreman and a co-leader for the shop’s safety task team. “There were two major things that our crew did well last year to remain accident-free,” said Gray. “We focused on people and processes. Our crew is a very close knit group, so our relationships with each other made it easy to communicate regularly and watch out for each other. The second thing we did was follow our processes closely. Having good processes and procedures in place made our work safer. The processes also made it easier to recognize things out of place or things that needed fixing.”

Andy Green, vice president of Component Fabrication and Assembly, congratulates Pipe Shop craftsmen who had an accident-free safety record in 2013. Photo by John Whalen

Welder Orlando Boyer has been accident-free for the past nine years. “Our crew is like a big family,” said Boyer. “We lookout for each other, talk and share laughs. I think the biggest contributor to our safety successes is discussing safety regularly. Every morning we remind each other to recognize, evaluate and control (R.E.C.) situations and take 10 seconds before we start work to make sure our workplace is safe. During that time we look for anything that could be hazardous or get in the way of us working safely. If anything needs to be done, we notify a supervisor and ensure it is taken care of before we begin our work.”

Security News Flash Determination of “need-to-know” is the personal responsibility of all shipbuilders! “Need-to-know” is one of the most difficult security principles to apply. The practice of “need-to-know” limits the damage that can be done by a trusted insider who betrays trust. Failures in implementing the “need-to-know” principle can cause serious damage to an organization and to national security. When performing your job, you are expected to limit requests for information to that which you have a “need-to-know.” Under some circumstances, you may be expected to explain and justify your “need-to-know” when asking others for information. Likewise, you are expected to ensure that anyone to whom you give classified, sensitive, or proprietary information has a legitimate “need-to-know” even if they have the proper security clearance. Refrain from discussing classified, sensitive, or proprietary information in hallways, lunch areas, elevators, rest rooms, or smoking areas where the discussion may be overheard by persons who do not have the appropriate security clearance or access and a “need-to-know.”

Engineering Career Days Continued from p. 1 ...opportunity,” Southall said. “You are standing right in the

middle of some of the most nationally recognized institutions in this country, and we hope you will take advantage of it.” Using a format similar to speed dating, students experienced hands-on opportunities to learn about different science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines, from nuclear engineering to low-temperature physics. After rotating through four mini-workshops staffed by the sponsoring organizations, the students participated in one of three engineering design challenges. The shipyard challenged students to build the lightest boat that held the most amount of weight before sinking. NASA challenged students to design a landing capsule judged on the rate of descent while protecting the marshmallow payload placed inside. Jefferson Lab challenged students to design and build the most powerful wind-powered machine to lift dice from the floor to the level of the tabletop.
