Saturday, October 19, 2013 Three years before World War II, 2,800 idealistic Americans fought in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade (ALB) beside Spain’s government against General Franco’s fascist rebels. While Hitler and Mussolini sent Franco planes and heavy arms, Britain, France, and the U.S. remained “neutral.” Only the Soviets aided the government. Like nowhere in history, ideologies— Liberalism, Socialism, Republicanism, Nazism, Communism, and Anarchism—clashed in day-to-day life as well as on the battlefield. Many ALB Veterans fought on in WWII. Inspired artists alerted the world, including Hemingway (For Whom the Bell Tolls), Orwell (Homage to Catalonia), and Picasso (Guernica).

Effective and Engaging Strategies for Common Core Literacy Standards

Collaborative for Educational Services 97 Hawley Street, Northampton, MA (I-90 north to I-91 Exit 18) 9:00am to 3:30pm | Lunch will be provided | Free workshop

The ALB Archives and partners today make available online a trove of documents and images. Seasoned scholars and educators will present these rich stories and primary sources in a daylong workshop. • Who were these American visionaries? What did they achieve? What price did they pay? • How did ideology shape the war on the ground? What legacy did the Spanish Civil War pass on in the decades since? Create Common Core aligned lessons and resources to engage students with this unique and compelling era and its enormous impact. Featuring resources from:

The Library of Congress www.loc.gov

Abraham Lincoln Brigade (ALB) Archives

To earn 10 PDPs and a $25 gift card, participants must also complete two hours of online sessions and submit a lesson plan using primary sources from the Library of Congress.

This workshop made possible by a partnership between: The Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources Program at the Collaborative for Educational Services, Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives, the Puffin Foundation, Boston Public Schools, UMass/Amherst Department of History and the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Since 2006, the Collaborative has introduced hundreds of teachers to in-depth work with primary sources through its Emerging America: Teaching American History Program. In 2010, the Library of Congress awarded a grant to the Collaborative to serve as a Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) Consortium member—and the sole member in New England, providing professional development throughout Massachusetts in the use of the Library’s vast online resources. For details and other workshops, visit EmergingAmerica.org/tps.
