Fleischmann HO 4010 BR 89.70-77 Installation of a M1 Decoder
This Tank locomotive has power pickups on 6 wheels. The best method to disassemble the locomotive is to turn it upside down.
There is 1 screw holding the body to the chassis, and the there are locating tabs at the back of the cab. Remove the screw.
Rotate the body up and away from the drive gear, it will pivot on point B (pictured above)
Once the body has been removed, unclip the motor and remove the floor of the cab. Remove the capacitor (C above) Also remove the two RF chokes linking the pickups to the motor brushes. This effectively isolates the motor from the pickups ready for the decoders wiring.
The OEM lampholder needs to be insulated with heatshrink or removed (D Pictured Above)
Replace the OEM lamp with a “Warm White” LED or a SMD would be better, feed the Blue and White wire as shown .
Fix the Blue and White wire in place with Cyano-Acrylate Glue ( or similar), so they remain clear of the wheels.
Solder the Decoder wires (as shown above) Red to the tab leading to the right side power pickups , Orange to the Motor contact, Blue Joined with the Blue wire from the front light. White via a 1K Ohm resistor to the front light.
Looking at the other side of the loco , Black to the Left side power pickup tab , Grey to the Motor terminal. This will allow the motor to be removed if needed.
Fix the Decoder on top of the Motor clip, with a small piece of Double Sided Tape; take care not to stick the tape to the moving parts of the motor, which are exposed. Care should also be taken to keep the wiring free of the motor as well.
Paint the Blue and White wire Red where the wire runs exposed to view. The wiring near the decoder should be painted black as well. Put the loco on the Programming track to make sure all is OK. Then put the body back on tacking care to keep the wiring free from pinch points in the body.
The decoder is just visible in the cab, resting above the motor.
