120 WILDFLOWER & NATURE EVENTS FOR EVERYONE MARCH - OCTOBER 2017
YOUR FREE GUIDE
Be Inspired Welcome to the 2017 Flowers of the Dales Festival, celebrating all things wild and wonderful in and around the Yorkshire Dales. Each year the Festival brings together an exciting collection of activities inspired by nature. This year we have more than 120 events on offer between March and November, so we hope that you will find something to tempt and inspire you. Choose from guided walks, talks, family activities, arts and crafts, identification courses, conservation days and photography workshops, to name just a few. Wildflowers can be found all over the Dales; in traditionally-managed hay meadows, ancient woodlands, heather-clad moors and amongst limestone pavement. These habitats and their wildflowers provide food and shelter throughout the year to support a wealth of wildlife, including bugs, birds and bats. Careful management is required to ensure that the Yorkshire Dales, their habitats and wildlife can be enjoyed and appreciated by future generations. The Festival aims to help you to discover the wonderful wildflowers of the Yorkshire Dales for yourself, so that you may go on to help to protect and value this special place in years to come. Since 2009 more than 33,000 people have taken part in Festival events – an achievement we at Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, as Festival coordinators, are incredibly proud of.
A special thank you
We would like to say a huge thank you to players of People’s Postcode Lottery, whose vital ongoing support helps to make this annual festival possible. With a minimum of 30% of the ticket price going directly to charities and good causes like Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, players have raised over £175.5 Million, making an incredible difference to inspiring projects that support both people and the planet. The Flowers of the Dales Festival is just one of the countless projects supported by players of the charity lottery. A special thank you also goes to the Linden Charitable Trust who have generously supported the festival programme in recent years. We’re also grateful to H2A Limited for producing this programme. About Us Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust (YDMT) is a small charity doing big things to help support the environmental, social and economic well-being of the Yorkshire Dales. This year marks our 20th anniversary! Over this time we have helped to deliver over 1,900 inspiring projects worth around £27 million in the Yorkshire Dales and surrounding area, helping to protect this wonderful landscape for future generations.
Some of our key achievements so far • Planting 1.3 million new native trees to create hundreds of woodlands • Restoring the botanical diversity of more than 350 hectares of degraded hay meadow • Coordinating life-changing rural apprenticeship opportunities for local young people • Bringing more than 8,000 people from disadvantaged urban backgrounds into the Dales for health and well-being benefits • Helping to improve life in rural areas by providing grant funding and advice to support local community groups, partnerships and businesses • Leading education activities for more than 3000 school children across the region, focussing on the local landscape, environment and cultural heritage. • Engaging over 33,000 people in wildflower-related events We wouldn’t be able to continue this important work without the generous support of our partners, local businesses and countless individuals like you. If you share our passion for the Yorkshire Dales and wish to support our work, please visit www.ydmt.org or call us on 015242 51002 to find out how you can help.
