FOOD SECURITY SECTOR Quarterly Report (Oct 2017 – Dec 2017)

Key achievements 

By the end of the Forth quarter of 2017, over than USD 140,853,393 were provided in the form of cash based food assistance to around 536,353 vulnerable individuals in camps and host communities.

Through the provision of healthy meals and school feeding program, the Food Security sector was successfully able to enhance the participation and school enrollment of 33,267 Syrian children in camps and 378,327 vulnerable Jordanian and Syrian children in host communities.

Due to the ongoing advocacy, the Food Security sector successfully drew the required attention from donors to insure funding for the Food Security sector projects. Based on the forth quarter financial tracing (As of Dec 2017), the Food security sector received 105 percent of the planned budget under refugee pillar and 46 percent under resilience pillar.

The Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), the chair of the Food Security JRP task force, with support form the Food Security sector ,succeeded in accommodating all the budget required by partners in order to implement food security activities in 2018 for both refugee and resilience pillars.

Challenges faced during the reporting period 

The implementation of resilience projects under the Food Security sector was affected as only three organization out of five were successfully able to secure funding in 2017, thus affecting the sector ability to promote food security, maintain sustainability and efficient use of agriculture resources.

As of Dec 2017, the resilience pillar received only 46 percent of the requested budget.

Nutrition awareness for improved food utilization is one of the key project for the food security sector that was affected with limited funding. Only one percent of the planned target were able to receive training in good nutritional practices.

2017 Key lessons learned 

In the process of formulating the JRP Food Security sector response plan, the Food Security sector with guidance form MoA, took into consideration the information obtained from the quarterly financial tracing and the trends noted from the sector progress report. The project In-Kind food assistance in host community was shifted from refugee to resilience pillar to allow for better budget allocation.

In 2017, the project REF 1.5 “Nutrition awareness for improved food utilization and nutrition” was the only under funded project in the refugee pillar. Taking into account that all food distribution activities include Nutrition awareness raising, the Food Security sector revised the project and agreed to include it as an activity under the food security projects in 2018 instead of a standalone project.
