When the first snow falls, people withdraw into their houses and hibernate like animals. But Robert, Annina and Kudowski, all three stranded in the small village of Waldesruh, stay awake and set off, leaving the village behind them.

© Gianni Occhipinti

In a black Suzuki Samurai they drive through a white country in the grip of winter. It is the country they know, and yet it is different. The silence of the houses and the closed shutters tell a story of deep dreams, and there is hardly a person to be seen on the streets. The three travellers do not know each other well. Chance has brought them together – each with his or her own story and secrets – and their journey through the snow towards the South turns out to be taking them somewhere where it is not just winter that comes to an end. Benjamin Lebert has written a poetic novel about friendship and about ways of defying coldness.

Once again Andrea Maria Schenkel has turned an historic murder case into a breathtakingly exciting crime novel. A small village in the middle of the Bavarian Forest, 1944. The young and beautiful Afra is pregnant and returns to the restrictions of the parental home she had left years before to seek her fortune elsewhere. Driven away for being a Franzosenschickse, a German girl who sleeps with the French soldiers, she now has no choice but to return to her parents, strict believers living in poverty, who are ashamed of their daughter. When Albert is born, scarcely a day goes by without a row. In the small village in the Bavarian Forest, the voices talking about the cottagers and their sluttish daughter grow louder and louder. And then one day Afra is found dead, lying covered in blood in the sparsely furnished living room…

Wiesbaden is groaning under a heatwave and a cunning rapist is speading fear and terror in the town. Four women have already fallen victim to him. It soon becomes clear to the detectives Winnie Heller and Hendrik Verhoeven why the serial rapist is being described as an ‘artiste’ in the press: he is an adept at spying on women and infiltrating himself into their homes unnoticed. All the stranger then, the inconsistencies of the most recent case, in which the victim’s husband was shot dead. Why doesn’t the young Russian woman fit into the artiste’s pattern of victims? And how could the meticulous schemer let himself be caught by her husband? The investigators aren’t the only ones asking these questions; the artiste too is casting about, because somebody is trying to pin a murder on him which he hasn’t committed.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is wrong. The climate debate needs to be reopened.

© Angela Franke

© Peter Hundert

Contradicting earlier predictions, global warming has been at a standstill for ten years. The latest findings prove this is mainly caused by oceanic cycles and the sun entering a phase of low activity. With great clarity two experts now show how this has far-reaching consequences for our climate. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is sure – humans alone are responsible for the recent global warming. But are the infamous greenhouse gases really the culprit? Why hasn’t it gotten warmer over the last 10 years? During their research, Vahrenholt and Lüning closely examined the various IPCC climate models and reached the conclusion that the global warming of the past 150 years is to a great extent all part of a natural cycle controlled by the sun. The next decades will even see a slight global cooling rather than further warming. This gives us valuable time to develop renewable sources of energy in ways that are both sustainable and economically sound.

The first biography of Hans Scholl!

© Christopher David

Hans Scholl is the epitome of the resistance against the Nazi terror, and yet his life is barely known. Only recently have documents become accessible which allow us to trace his inner path from Hitler Youth leader to founder of the White Rose. Barbara Ellermeier describes the development of this religious intellectual in a major biography which replaces old legends with sound new facts. In the books and films about the protagonists of the White Rose, Sophie Scholl has always been the focus of attention, but it was her elder brother, Hans, who was the brains of the resistance group. Since 2001 hundreds of pages from his unpublished writings have gradually been released to researchers. They provide us with deep insights into the way of thinking of a questioner and a seeker whose break with the Nazi regime only gradually changed into radical opposition.

In a spur of the moment decision, an ordinary soldier of very modest origins also decides to fight against Hitler’s war. It is the story of a perfectly normal lance corporal who never intended to be a hero, but ended up carrying the secret papers of the resistance fighters all over Europe on his military motorbike. Inge Kloepfer’s daughter, Isabel (14) was fed up with hearing people yammering on about how stressed the young people of Germany are – and equally fed up with the fact that it’s only ever adults who write about bringing up children. Anyone who questions young people about their attitude towards life will sense their intense energy and their obsession with success. The only ones who are actually stressed are their perpetually worried parents, particularly their mothers. Isabel Kloepfer drew up a questionnaire which she sent out to many young people. The results reveal something astonishing – like Isabel herself, the majority of her contemporaries are under enormous pressure to perform, but wouldn’t want things any other way. On the contrary – they enjoy their lives and the success which they wouldn’t be able to achieve without pressure and discipline.

Life as a chambermaid in German hotels – an unsparingly candid account. ‘Stealing from the minibar was a regular national pastime. People who would never have dared take a plastic bag in the supermarket without obediently paying their ten cents, drank the coke, beer and red wine as if it were all on the house. We never went to the trouble of charging them afterwards for the resulting costs. When it comes down to it, the guest is always the boss. And we’re his idiots.’ Anna K. describes what goes on behind the facade of the smartly dressed hotel guest walking through the lobby, and how she found out more about these people than she ever wanted to know. Her stories are funny, grotesque, and often outrageous. Because even if some guests ignore every code of good behaviour, Anna’s job only ever permits her one reaction – a friendly smile and a ‘Sure, no problem’.

VW was considered to be in dire need of restructuring, but their image changed when Martin Winterkorn became head of the company. This book tells the story of the transformation of the largest German industrial concern. Martin Winterkorn was the object of intense media attention when he took over from Bernd Pischetsrieder as the head of VW in 2007, after running Audi for five years. A perfectionist, who knows every screw in every car, he managed to put the ailing company back on the path to success – Volkswagen wants to become the most successful car manufacturer by 2018. However, it looks as if it’s going to be No. 1 in the car industry quite a bit sooner. How is Winterkorn leading the most important German concern into the future as regards electromobility, and what implications does this have for Germany’s economic position? Conversations with Martin Winterkorn and his closest associates.

Fanatical racist medicine – a little-known chapter in the history of Auschwitz, told from the viewpoint of the victims. A piece of historical literature which is both moving and shocking. At the beginning of 1943 the SS administration of Auschwitz isolated a two-storey building, Block 10, from the rest of the main camp. There, in the middle of a male concentration camp, they held on average more than 400 Jewish women in a very cramped space. Two Nazi doctors tested methods of sterilisation on them and other doctors used them for further experiments. The inmates who survived this torture gave a lot of evidence to the courts after the end of the war. From the records of their memories, the authorities’ documents and other sources, including his own interviews, Lang has put together a large mosaic.

Tom Goeller writes the biography of one of the most ambivalent personalities in European history with the help of personal statements from prominent historical and contemporary figures. Under Frederick the Great (1712–1786) Prussia entered the club of major European powers. Although he was a philosopher, in his own words he went to war ‘out of exuberance’. Henry Kissinger recognises his ‘unscrupulous diplomacy’. Richard von Weizsäcker enthuses over his ‘lonely struggles between power and spirit, which are among the most valuable features of German history’. Tom Goeller brings ‘Old Fritz’ to life in a fresh light through new interpretations of historical evidence and conversations with prominent people about the importance of this king for the present day.

‘A brilliant, instantly enlightening biography about Frederick the Great. Tom Goeller shows his gift for lucid dissections of the dominant monarch of the 18th century. By combining historical evidence with contemporary views his book becomes an authoritative reference on the “Alte Fritz”.’ Cecelia Porter, PhD, The Washington Post

Reliability, landmark decisions and taking up clear, often uncomfortable, positions: Helmut Schmidt and Peer Steinbrück come to the point – purposefully, without political jargon, move by move. They are among the leading politicians of their generation and have been friends for many years. They meet to talk over major political issues of current concern. Although Helmut Schmidt and Peer Steinbrück are almost thirty years apart in age, they are often mentioned in the same breath: the first as elder statesman and moral authority; the second, since the recent financial crisis, as a guarantor of political integrity. This is an exchange of views between two committed social democrats, who cannot give their approval to many of the resolutions their party is promulgating.

A touching tribute – enchantingly illustrated by Ute Krause A loving thankyou for past and present and the wonderful certainty that her father will be there for her in the future too. This book takes as its theme the adventure of a child’s life with her father. ‘When the two of us were left to our own devices, we transformed the flat into a robber’s den. And made a great haul!’ The high points of the father-child relationship are described here with unerring humour. This gift shows one father that his warmth, dependability and love are recognised and respected.

As simple as it is skilful. A marvellously entertaining ‘just look at this!’ book. With a few strokes caricaturists portray a person’s most important characteristics. Anja Haas literally brings this to a point. Out of astonishingly few pixels she creates well-known personalities from the worlds of music, film, literature, politics and society. The little pixel people have an overwhelming charm in spite of their striking technique. They are as artistically polished as they are witty. And anyone who really cannot guess or does not know one of the subjects can look them up in the inner margin.
