There is no doubt that an increasing number of students go overseas to learn English. However, not surprisingly, studying in an English speaking country brings many benefits for students in terms of improving their language skills as well as problems for those who find it difficult to adapt to being fully immersed in a different culture away from their family and friends. It is my belief that studying abroad is more advantageous, and I will examine these questions below by considering the obvious benefits and downsides of learning in this way. To begin with, studying English in an English speaking country has three main benefits. Firstly, the environment is important when we study in an English speaking country because we are forced to listen and speak English everyday. For instance, from morning till night, all conversations are held in English. Consequently, students cannot give up speaking English because it is the only way to talk to people there. Furthermore, this compulsory training makes students improve their English skills quickly. Secondly, we surely can get good quality of English in an English-speaking country, as teachers are all native English speakers. However, we cannot get the same quality of teacher as easily in our own countries. Thirdly, when students stay in an English speaking country, they can learn English as well as about the culture. For example, instead of listening to “a story” about overseas and imagining, students can see exactly how people live, talk and react and communicate with each other in the actual country. Therefore, this experience will be helpful to understand the culture and become a strong back up to being a good English speaker. However, there are some considerable drawbacks as well. The main drawback is when students live overseas they often become homesick as they no longer have the direct support network of their family and friends. These emotional changes can be a distraction to their study, with some students even dropping out of their courses. This issue can be avoided when they study in their home countries. Adding to this, it may be a good idea for beginners to start learning English in their own country as it is easier to study in their own language at first, and therefore they can understand better without the overwhelming burden of being fully immersed in another culture. Another downside is the high costs associated with overseas study, especially considering the cost for airfares and living expenses as well as school fees. This can impose a considerable financial burden on families, and thus we can save a lot of money if we study English in our own country. In conclusion, despite these problems, learning English in an English speaking country, as far as I am concerned, provides a wonderful linguist and cultural opportunity. Moreover, considering students’ improve quickly and the quality of teachers, I firmly believe that living in an English speaking country is probably the best way of studying English.
