WASHINGTON — A lastditch Republican push to roll back the Affordable Care Act appeared to pick up momentum Monday even as op position from leading patient advo cates and healthcare organizations mount ed, setting the stage for another potential ly dramatic Senate vote on the future of the 2010 law, often called Obamacare. Prospects for the Arizona new repeal legisla tion — sponsored by Republican Gov. Doug Sens. Bill Cassidy, Ducey RLa., and Lindsey Graham, RS.C. — remain uncertain, but the proposal won an important en dorsement Monday from a key Republi can governor, Arizo na’s Doug Ducey. That raised the Arizona possibility that the state’s senior senator, Republican Sen. John John McCain, who cast the critical vote McCain in July to kill the last repeal push, could back the new bill. McCain has said he would be influ enced by Ducey’s position but has also called for a less partisan, less rushed approach to healthcare legis lation. Supporters of the GrahamCassidy measure aim to bring it to the Senate floor next week, just days before the expiration of special rules that could allow it to pass with 50 votes, rather than the 60 that major measures typically require.

Seattle City Councilmember Tim Burgess will serve as mayor, succeeding council President Bruce Harrell, until Nov. 28.
Another day, another mayor. The Seattle City Council picked Councilmember Tim Burgess Monday to replace Council President Bruce Harrell as temporary mayor and serve for the next 71 days, until a new mayor is elected. Sworn in shortly after the council’s 51 vote, Burgess became the city’s 55th mayor — and its third in less than a week.
Only Councilmember Kshama Sawant voted against selecting the former radio journalist, police officer and publicrela tions professional. “This is a time of transition,” Burgess, 68, told colleagues and reporters before taking the oath of office in a hastily putto gether City Hall ceremony. “But the people of Seattle need to know that the city government is open and functioning on their behalf.”
A Seattle native who previ ously served on the Seattle Ethics and Elections Commis sion, Burgess grew up on Capi tol Hill and now calls Queen Anne home. First elected in November 2007, he led a push for citysub sidized preschool, sponsored the law that put Seattle on a path to a $15anhour mini mum wage and helped hire Police Chief Kathleen O’Toole.
