FSG Design Case Study FSG Design chooses Creo Parametric 2.0 together with the Interactive Surface Design Extension (ISDX) and the Flexible Modeling Extension to increase productivity by 25-30%. Business Initiatives FSG Design blends its expertise in design, usability and human factors, engineering, and manufacturing with their client’s brand identity to produce innovative products that are relevant to industry trends. They transform concepts and ideas into products that are compelling and functional. CEO & Principle, Frank Glogowski, is a pioneer in the SMB (Small-Medium Business) CAD Design industry. Many of FSG’s projects require a CAD tool that is powerful, adaptive and can create pristine surfaces. Visionary thinking and a sound understanding of business factors, human factors, technology, and manufacturing considerations are at the core of every FSG Design effort. Partnering with a wide array of companies, FSG Design produces innovative solutions for a variety of industries, including robotics, military, automotive, medical, commercial, and consumer. They have worked with anything from Fortune 500 companies to start ups to provide services and processes that are tailored to meet the particular project requirements.

Business Challenges To remain a leader in innovative CAD design, Glogowski is continually looking for ways to improve, engage, and increase efficiency in their product development initiatives. Many of the competitive CAD software programs restrict files from being accessible bidirectionally between different CAD tools. Specifically, one of Frank’s challenges has been the need to use third party software to achieve very complex surfaces. This process of importing and exporting data to complete a design can be time consuming and inefficient. Editing existing CAD geometry without leveraging or impacting underlying features has been another challenge for FSG Design. To achieve this type of editing, even a simple change can require the user to re-import or recreate an entire parametric model or assembly. In some cases the import and export process can result in a loss of design intent or parametric history. Organizations often perceive upgrading to new software to be intimidating, time consuming, and expensive. Finding the right balance between value and cost is a challenge in any size organization. Glogoswki was looking for a way to adopt and upgrade to current world-class CAD solutions while keeping the budget in check.

Solutions Creo Parametric 2.0: Flex Modeling Extension & Interactive Surface Design Extension Glogowski turned to EAC Product Development Solutions for a software solution that would relieve some of the challenges faced by FSG Design. Parametric Technology Corporation’s (PTC) Creo Parametric 2.0 is a CAD software solution that provides the first set of apps that allow everyone in the enterprise to use the tools that work best for them so that they can contribute more efficiently to the product development process. Creo also provides an unprecedented level of interoperability – data moves seamlessly between apps, extensions, and modeling modes while retaining design intent – such that companies can share data more easily with internal and external parties. By delivering new apps with seamless interoperability, Creo enables companies to make dramatic improvements in their engineering, manufacturing and service processes. Glogowski has adopted a few of Creo’s apps to increase efficiency and productivity throughout the organization. One solution is the Interactive Surface Design Extension (ISDX). According to Glogowski, ISDX meets 98% of the surfacing needs for his organization. In the past, Glogowski used ICEM-Surf (a Class A surfacing tool) for highly complex surface modeling geared for the automotive industry. Creo 2.0 and the ISDX Module gives him complete control over the desired surface in one interface.

There is a direct connection with the ICEM-Surf data and ISDX data and I am able to work bi-directional which is really nice. Once one surface is set in – I can take care of all the Engineering with Creo and the ISDX Module.

Glogowski also uses the Flexible Modeling Extension with Creo 2.0. This tool is for design engineers who need all the power of a parametric 3D CAD solution along with the utmost flexibility to make changes to any model. Creo FMX provides the ideal solution; an easy-to-use, fast and powerful set of geometry editing tools that enable them to make last minute, late-stage design changes – without losing design intent.

One of the reasons I purchased Creo 2.0 was because it saves significant time while making a quick change without having to go through the full import. There have been many instances in the past where I have had a need for this and didn’t have it.

Putting the Tools To Work: A bonus to working with Creo 2.0 is the ease of use. Many times when organizations switch to new CAD software it can be difficult to learn and adapt to the new interface. The easy to use and functional interface is very intuitive and it’s one of the primary things that gives you speed. Little things like the cross-section tool make this software efficient and effective. The availability of fully integrated apps, extensions and modeling modes make this software even more powerful.

“25-30% Creo Parametric 2.0 as a whole is increasing

PRODUCTIVITY & EFFICIENCY by

over other CAD Software.

Special Thanks to Frank Glogowski and FSG Design for their input and cooperation while developing this report.
