Primary Pledge

The Pearson Primary pledge We don’t think it is enough to just sell a school a book, or a reading scheme or a maths programme, then simply walk away. We believe it is much more valuable for us to work with schools to ensure our products and services are implemented in the most effective way. We want to encourage you – the people who use our products and services – to tell us how you find them, to share the impact they have on your children’s learning, and to work with us to refine and improve them. We want you to see us as partners, not just people who occasionally sell you something.

www.pearsonprimary.co.uk

As part of our commitment to that partnership, we have developed four aspirations around our key products and services that we want you to hold us to. We won’t always get everything right, but we encourage you to let us know how we’re doing, point out when we’re not delivering on these aspirations and help us to get better.

2

on

They are based on sound academic research or effective classroom practice. We work with educational experts, including outstanding heads and teachers to help develop our products and services and we trial them with real teachers and children. We actively encourage you to give us feedback and we take that feedback on board when updating our services (see pages 94–95 for how to get in touch). We help you to implement our products and services in your school effectively, keep an eye on how they are being used and make tailored suggestions as to how you can get even more out of them. We update our online services when the curriculum changes.

Pledge 2: Our products and services are as simple as possible (but no simpler) They’re easy to try. Order a taster pack or take out a free trial, try your product or service out in your classroom (tell us if you need help setting it up) and talk to us if you have any questions.

Pledge 3: We provide training and support to ensure you get the most out of your investment We will provide appropriate training whenever you buy one of our online services, to help you really get going. Our friendly customer care advisors are available to answer your questions and help with any problems.

Primary Pledge

Pledge 1: Our products and services work

We provide extensive guidance on how to get the best out of our products and services, including videos and help guides. We keep in touch regularly to see how you’re getting on with our products and services, and whether there’s anything more we can do to help.

Pledge 4: Our prices are fair and transparent It’s easy to see how much buying or subscribing to one of our products or services will cost, and what you’ll get for your money. Our online services are offered at three price levels, depending on the size of your school. Small schools pay less, large schools pay more, medium-sized schools pay somewhere in the middle.

They’re easy to buy. From our sales consultants, through our website, by email, phone, fax or carrier pigeon*. They’re easy to use. Our talented authors, editors, designers and programmers work hard to make sure everything’s clear, straightforward and intuitive. * We’ve never actually received an order by carrier pigeon, but we live in hope.

I am loving Bug Club both as a parent and as a teacher. My P3 son is having so much fun collecting his points to tell his friends in school. My P1 class are enjoying the interactive bugs and having the lilac stories which they are familiar with to discuss at home and in school.

The children love the different illustrations and the familiar characters. It really inspires the more reluctant readers.

A fun, firm foundation in phonics See page 72

We believe there’s no better way to teach phonics than with Phonics Bug, and we’re not alone. Phonics Bug meets 100% of the DfE criteria for teaching systematic synthetic phonics and helps pupils succeed in their screening check to boot! Readers, not robots! Learning phonics is not just a methodology, it’s an art too. That’s why Phonics Bug books are packed with beautiful artwork, humour and loveable characters (including the BBC’s Alphablocks). There’s no better way to encourage young readers than with books and topics they really want to read.

Here comes the pedagogy bit ... Phonics Bug is written by Professor Rhona Johnston and Dr Joyce Watson. It’s largely thanks to their highly-regarded 7-year study in Clackmannanshire that systematic synthetic phonics is now considered the most effective way to teach children to read.

Creating a reading for pleasure culture Great Heath Primary School and Bug Club

The background

Kate Ruttle, the SENCO at Great Heath Primary School, Mildenhall trialled Bug Club as part of the school’s Fischer Family Trust Wave 3 literacy programme. Here she explains how Bug Club helped two Year 2 children who struggled with their reading take the important early steps to help them become confident and fluent readers.

Too many children in our school don’t reach level 2 in their SATs so we decided to train a teaching assistant to follow the FFT programme and trial finely levelled Bug Club to see if we could support our children more effectively. Initially we chose two children who were already well behind at the start of Year 2: Lauren* is a summer born girl. Her reading is about a level P8 so we matched her to Bug Club level Red C. Daniel* is a summer born boy. He was virtually a non-reader so he started reading Pink A books. The programme roughly follows the Reading Recovery structure with alternative reading and writing days and 25 minutes’ one-to-one support per day. Children read a book three times: it’s introduced on a reading day, re-read on a writing day and re-read as familiar text on the next reading day.

‘‘

Her Mum is thrilled that she is reading and re-reading all of the books on her online Bug Club world at home.

Daniel: learning to learn and enjoying becoming a reader

Part of Lauren’s problem with school has been confidence. At the start of Year 2, she lost ground from 1C back to P8 so we moved her back to Red A to build her confidence. She soon began to look forward to her daily sessions and within a week was reading Red C confidently. In just six weeks, she jumped from a struggling P7/8 to a confident 1B. The small painless steps in Bug Club have been invaluable because Lauren now has the confidence to learn and enjoy reading. Her general class work has improved and her Mum is thrilled that she is reading and re-reading all of the books on her online Bug Club world at home. By the beginning of the Spring term, she will be back on track and her end of year predictions are now a level 2B – very good progress!

Daniel is an active little boy who has always been unwilling to read or write. He has a low average receptive vocabulary and a poor short term memory. By the end of Year 1, he realised he was falling behind his peers and his behaviour worsened. For Daniel, one of the draws to Bug Club was the familiar characters in some of the books. Although he could not read the Star Wars or Wallace and Gromit books, he knew if he worked hard, this might happen. It became apparent that Daniel did not get the point of phonics and was doing phase 3 work for the third time, so we started with the Trucktown books quickly progressing from Lilac to Pink A and B. Six weeks in, he is now reading Yellow books and will soon be ready for Blue. For Daniel, the value of Bug Club is twofold; the small steps are allowing him to make progress without fear of failure and the cluster books give him incentives to move on. The motivation of reading another book about a character has given him the incentive to try. His behaviour has improved and once he understood why he was learning phonics, he discovered he had been learning the phase 3 graphemes after all! Although he is still behind the expected level for his age, Daniel is now learning to learn and enjoying becoming a reader.

The increased emphasis on grammar, punctuation and spelling in the new English curriculum is quite likely to have a major impact on what you teach and how you teach it. English Wordsmith

Where great language skills are forged Fast forward to curriculum change The new Primary English curriculum places a stronger emphasis on spelling, grammar and punctuation. In response we are evolving our leading literacy programme, Literacy Evolve, into Wordsmith, a great new service to help you tackle the new national curriculum head-on.

Wordsmith is set to inspire teachers and children up and down the country with its powerful mix of top quality teaching resources, lively and interesting lessons, comprehensive professional development and the ultimate in flexible planning and assessment.

Who’s involved? We’ve collected together the great and the good to help us create a world-class programme. With contributions from Sue Palmer and Michaela Morga n, you know that spelling, punctuation and grammar will be relevant and fun. Language specialist Janet Brennan is on hand to make sure that the quality is not just good but outstanding. And the programme is underpinned by the Pearson Primary English Ladde r, developed together with Debra Myhill (from the University of Exeter Centre for Writing Research) so you can be confident that the progression and pace is pitch-perfect.

If you can’t say it, you can’t write it. The most effective way to develop successful and motivated writers is to encourage them to talk – about books, and about the language that writers use. It’s what the draft National Curriculum for English demands and it’s what will help you deliver lively and interesting lessons that ensure your KS1 and KS2 learners acquire that all important mastery of the English language.

Need help with grammar but worried about stifling creativity? Don’t be! With Wordsmith you’ll be able to retain the imaginative text-level work you love (and which Ofsted want to see), while raising standards in the new technical areas of spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Wordsmith places strong emphasis on exploring language Lively, interactive activities bring grammar and spelling rules to life; while reading and analysing whole novels, poems and non-fiction texts helps children to see how some of the best writers use language – and to try it out for themselves. Our ‘live’ units give children a real purpose and audience for their work – perfect for motivating your boys.

We’ve taken lots of the favourite storybooks and novels from Literacy Evolve, added brand new non-fiction and created multi-faceted teaching sequences around them. What’s in Wordsmith?

‘Live’ units give children exciting contexts for their writing, like writing and performing a school play or entering a national competition.

Home-school support Suporting the home-school partnership

Why choose Pearson?

Supporting the home-school partnership We believe that parents are crucial to children’s success – however brilliantly a child is taught and however stimulating their school environment is, if learning isn’t reinforced at home then part of the picture will always be missing. Worryingly though, a massive 98%* of teachers are concerned that reading for pleasure does not take place often enough in some homes.* We understand it can be daunting for parents to know where to start to support their child’s learning, that time is a major factor, and that children are becoming more and more savvy about what and how they learn. And of course the difficulties schools can face getting parents involved and engaged in the first place (or indeed getting the balance right for those with very proactive parents!). This is why, at Pearson, we’re dedicated to supporting the home-school partnership on both sides. We provide free help and advice to parents to support them with their children’s learning, and we also work with schools to engage and involve parents in a way that suits them. We also increasingly design our products and services to span the home-school divide and have developed a suite of tools to help schools engage more effectively with parents.

Rapid gives parents the power to help their children practise in privacy

Bug Club has been designed to appeal to a generation of children used to reading and playing online, and brings together stunning printed books with an exciting online reading world. Both the online and printed books come with hints and tips for parents including advice on how to support children’s reading according to the level they are at.

Our new Rapid online catch-up service is ideal for forging home-school links. Online interactive e-books, comprehensive activities that can be tried privately to build confidence and bespoke feedback are all brought together in one engaging and supportive online environment.  Because the activities and books can be accessed via audio, both children and parents can confidently use the platform – no matter what their own level of literacy skills.

Maths Made Easy provides individual parent log-ins

Grammar and Spelling Bug has an online information feature for parents

Maths Made Easy, our new online maths homework service developed with Carol Voderman, comes with individual logins that allow parents to track the progress of their child’s homework results, familiarise themselves with homework that has been set and even have a go themselves.

Maths Champs is accessible at school and at home The online nature of Maths Champs’ exciting maths practice games means that they can be accessed at school and at home, and the automatic scoring gives parents a snapshot of their child’s learning and progress.

With Grammar & Spelling Bug, children will be able to access their practice games at home in the same way as their Bug Club reading books. This means parents will be able to see which area of spelling or grammar their child is currently working on and develop on it. Plus, the information feature is on hand to help if a parent feels unsure how to explain the more complex points of English grammar.

Suporting the home-school partnership

Bug Club has built-in hints and tips for parents

of teachers attribute developed language skills and higher reading levels to those children who regularly enjoy reading time with parents at home.*

Home-school support

‘‘

I think Bug Club is a genius concept... As a parent, I can see what my child is doing, I can work with my child. It gives the teacher an ability to do a real microanalysis of what that child is learning. For the kid it’s fun – and if it’s fun, they’re going to engage with it.

Parents and schools can also find free support on our website to support the home-school partnership; from a free guide for schools on how to engage parents, to free tips and advice for parents on how to support children’s learning at home.

Key development, learning and provision

t If children want support

to explore beyond fi their ve secure with efforts, but make sure they addition are facts to 5. children should Eventually, know the numbers number pairs to 10. for

t With small numbers, there are actually very few addition pairs to learn. For example, with 5 there is just 5 + 0, 4 + 1 and 3 + 2, as long as children realise that you can add two numbers in either order, so 4 + 1 is the same as 1 + 4. t By now, children will have done many activities and games that involve adding one or two, and will have begun to learn some of these addition facts (e.g. 3 + 1 = 4, 3 + 2 = 5) without any effort.

1+0=1

4+0=4

3+1=4

4+1=5

2+2=4

3+2=5

t Children may also know some doubles from playing games with two dice (e.g. 3 + 3 = 6).

t When children are working with actual objects they may have to deal with more facts than shown above, for example three red apples and two green apples is not the same as two red apples and three green apples, even though in both cases the numbers 2 and 3 are added to make 5.

t So children will already know many of the addition pairs for the numbers to 5. It is valuable for them now to understand the idea that there is a definite ‘family’ of number pairs for each number, with not many members:

t When working on the number track children deal with numbers in a more abstract way. Here, it becomes obvious that three steps plus two more steps, or two steps plus three more steps, both take you to 5. Or to put it another way, 3 + 2 = 2 + 3 = 5.

t If children want to explore beyond five support their efforts, but make sure they are secure with addition facts to 5. Eventually, children should know the number pairs for numbers to 10.

Mathematics Leading the way with technology www.pearsonprimary.co.uk

Why choose Pearson?

Leading the way with technology At Pearson, we have a long history of creating the best resources for primary schools. Our Heinemann, Ginn, Rigby and Longman resources have always been firm favourites, evolving with teachers and the curriculum for decades, if not centuries (Longman was founded way back in 1724)! But as we all know, education (and indeed the world) is changing. You only have to witness a toddler playing on a mobile device to realise just how digital-native today’s children are. They are becoming more and more savvy, not just about what they learn, but how they learn it, and for teachers and parents one of the challenges is in how to 132,000 go about grabbing their attention – and holding it. tablets That’s why we integrate technology into so much of what we do here in the primary team. That’s not to say that we’ve turned our backs on traditional printed resources (we believe there will always be a place for books and stories). But by adding new technologies into the mix, we can enhance learning by truly inspiring and exciting children, and support teachers by putting data at their fingertips, and helping to bridge the home-school divide.

Similarly, our fantastic Talk Maths app is an innovative and cost-effective approach (we had to do it!) to maths practice. Designed for pairs of children using iPads in the classroom, Talk Maths is a fun way to get children talking about maths and working together to solve problems. And, last but not least, there’s the highly acclaimed Abacus and Heinemann Active Maths Northern Ireland. Both of these are more than ‘just resources’; they’re comprehensive maths services. Jam-packed with just the right combination of clever online tools and a variety of high-quality interactive and print resources, they give you the flexibility, time and inspiration you need for focused and creative teaching.

As for keeping kids on their toes with exciting interactive games, Maths Champs is spot on. Trialled and tested by children themselves – the toughest critics – the lively online games revolutionise the way children practise maths, and the quick-fire nature of the games not only helps sharpen their skills, but improves their confidence too. Perfect for consolidating and complementing classroom teaching.

Leading the way with technology

Take Maths Made Easy, our brand new, online maths homework service, developed with Carol Vorderman. It’s designed to make setting and marking homework quick and easy so teachers can spend time on what they do best – teaching. An intuitive ‘drag and drop’ interface, intelligent pupil import facility and powerful search and sorting tools are just some of the nifty features that make this possible. And because it’s all online, children get to take Carol home with them each day (in the form of video tutorials) to help them with their homework! Parents also benefit from the ability to familiarise themselves with homework that has been set and can see their child’s homework results online (plus, if they’re unsure about how to go about helping their child with a particular problem, then Carol is once again on hand to help).

Catch-up and SEN Pupil Premium

Why choose Pearson?

Invest in your pupils with the premium The Pupil Premium (Pupil Deprivation Grant in Wales), has been a real hot news topic in recent months and with the Pupil Premium set to rise in 2012–2013 from £625m to £1.6bn, it’s going to continue to be a big focus for schools, the media and politicians alike.

No child left behind? Just 13.2% of children looked after by local authorities achieve five good GCSE grades, including english and maths, and the Government wants them to benefit from the extra funding through the premium. Results from the first phonics test in 2012, show that 62% of girls passed the test and 54% of boys across all schools tested. But only 44% of free school meals (FSM) pupils met the required standard for phonics decoding – a staggering 17% lower than other pupils.

www.pearsonprimary.co.uk/rapid

The Rapid family is built on a proven pedagogy that has been tried and tested over 8 years. The programme has already helped countless children catch-up in reading, writing, maths and phonics. Rapid Reading (now online), is the only intervention programme with a proven track record of success. A full scale independent study by NFER, showed that children using it make twice the normal rate of progress in reading and school based trials have resulted in pupils tripling their progress. We believe Rapid changes children’s lives – and we can prove it. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation have also identified other factors that can improve attainment – such as involving parents far more in their children’s learning. Because Rapid is now online, parents can also get involved in Reading with their children and using the wonderful interactive environment with a host of functions to support their children, no matter what their own confidence or literacy levels.

Our new Rapid online reading service features online interactive eBooks, comprehension activities that can be tried privately to build confidence and bespoke feedback brought together in one engaging and supportive online environment. Importantly, the assessment tools are built in to the platform making proving improvement so easy.

Originally, the £600 pa for each child claiming a free school meal could be used for pretty much any purpose. Now, OFSTED measures what it’s being used for when they do their assessments. Schools are also required to publish online details of how they have used the premium and the impact it has had. This means as a school, you will need to show measurable improvement across these disadvantaged groups.
