Fall News from Judi Dear Friends: I hope that you had a great summer. Now it is time to make plans for the fall. May has, once again, come up with a super class schedule. Welcome to our new teachers, John Kubiniec, Wenda Coburn, Kathy Trupiano, and Valerie Kubera. Stop in and see their wonderful samples and plan to take a class. We have a busy year ahead. Patchwork Plus has teamed with Island Batiks to sponsor their program called Quilted In Honor. We will be hosting an incredible quilt show in
October of 2014, but will be coming up with lots of other projects before that. Money raised from this venture will be going to Operation Homefront which works with returning veterans to help them transition to civilian life. Holly will be redesigning our web site this fall and we will have a special page to help you keep track of what we are doing.

The latest block-of-the-month quilt from Edyta Sitar and Laundry Basket Quilts is a stunning collection of quilt blocks that will take you through the seasons of the year. Her book “Seasonal Silhouettes” provides layouts and step-by-step instructions for Edyta’s raw-edge applique technique. And for those of us who admire Edyta’s eye for color and texture in her fabric choices, Laundry Basket Quilts has made available kits for each month’s block. Each kit contains laser-cut fusible applique pieces and the background fabric. We’ve started with blocks nine and ten – September and October. The kits are in the shop, the samples are made and they are so beautiful we can’t wait to make the November and December blocks! We’ll try to stay ahead of the demand but stop in early because the kits are selling fast!

Upcoming Events
Judi announced our “big news” in the August 18th issue of Judi’s Notes that we are participating in the upcoming Quilted In Honor program. Quilted In Honor is a fund raising initiative of the quilting industry to support our returning veterans and their families through Operation Homefront, a top military fund raising organization. Operation Homefront has stepped in to help veterans as they reenter civilian life and they will receive all the money raised through our participation in this program. Island Batik is a major sponsor of the project and we have ordered their Quilted In Honor line of fabric. Island Batik says of their new fabric: “The line was created to inspire quilters, sewing enthusiasts, guilds and shops to rally around our troops and give back in an innovative way. The line is meant to inspire projects that tell the human side of what "serving our country" really means to soldiers and their families back home. Their sacrifice is great; now it's our turn to show them how much we appreciate their commitment to our country and tell the stories of what their service means to us!” Many celebrity quilters have also lent their names to the project and in October 2014, we will receive a traveling quilt show of 50 quilts from designers such as Alex Anderson, Ricky Tims and Eleanor Burns. We are one of only two quilt shops in New York State to host the quilts and we are excited to bring this quilt show to our area! We will have many related events leading up to the show and we will keep you posted.
Valerie Kubera Saturday, November 23 ~ 2:00 pm We are excited to have Valerie Kubera of Painted Leaf Studio with us for an afternoon of sharing on Saturday, November 23 at 2:00 pm. Valerie “paints with fabric” using a combination of techniques starting with freezer paper patterns traced from her full sized drawings. She completes the piece with fusible appliqué, thread painting and free motion quilting. Most of her subjects sport either fins or feathers, and range from the whimsical Funky Fish to a collection of realistic Great Blue Herons and just about everything else in between! “I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t either drawing or painting or bent over a sewing machine making everything from clothes to purses to more quilts than I dare count. Three years ago, inspiration slapped me up alongside the head and I began to put the quilting and the drawing together. The result fills me with inspiration daily. I’m having the time of my life,“ says Valerie. Valerie has lived most of her life in the greater Syracuse area. She was born here, raised in Wayne Country, graduated from Syracuse University (Newhouse), and raised three kids in the Cicero area. Valerie will bring a sampling of her quilts including her Blossoms Collection. If there is enough interest, she will develop a class, which we will add to our schedule for the next session. So come join us on Saturday, November 23 at 2:00 pm…meet a few “funky fish”, be inspired, and share in Valerie’s excitement for fabric and design.
Our new line of Koala sewing cabinets are on their way and should be in the shop in early-September. Koala Cabinets bring versatility, beauty and optimal storage to your sewing space. Each cabinet can be expanded to meet your needs with a variety of companion cabinets, accessories and gorgeous finishes. Koala Cabinets are designed by sewing and craft professionals and manufactured by furnishing experts in the United States with the utmost quality and craftsmanship. After they arrive we'll have a new look in the store. So check us out!
“Just Judie” 25th Anniversary Celebration
We wrapped up our “Just Judie” 25th Anniversary Contest with a showing of the quilts on Saturday, August 17. We had fifteen contest-entry quilts from our store and what an amazing variety of quilts we had on display! Everyone started with the same fabrics but went in their own direction. Congratulations to Judy Sheridan who is a finalist in the national contest and to BJ Hall who is an alternate. Patty Elkovitch, a local Civil War era and fabric historian, joined us for the afternoon and shared her love of antique textiles. A huge thank you to all who participated!

Patchwork Plus Welcomes Three New Teachers
Look for their classes in this issue of our newsletter.
With a passion for sewing, design, quilting and instruction, in 1988 Wenda Coburn started Just For Ewe Sewing, providing a variety of services from traditional tailoring to custom quilt making. Enthusiastic about helping others to experience the joys of sewing, she began teaching sewing and quilting techniques in 1998. In 2004, she became a certified Square in a Square® instructor and product distributor. In 2007, she earned Square in a Square® Diamond Certification. In June 2007, Wenda was published in the book “Moving on with Diamonds.” Wanting to finish quilts herself she learned easy machine quilting techniques that gave a beautiful finish. “Quilting with training wheels” became a signature saying used in many of her popular Machine Quilting classes. This class led to a development of Quilt-As-U-Go! techniques, quilts, and workshops. In 2006 she began teaching how to quilt on a Short-Arm machine and quilting frame and offering resources and tools for these home quilters. In 2009 Wenda published Short Arm Machine Quilting. In 2010 and 2011 Wenda was published in the Quilter Magazine with articles on Short Arm Machine Quilting. At each workshop Wenda wants students to be:
“John Kubiniec was a runner-up in the 2010 McCall’s Design Star Competition, being one of the eight finalists out of a field of 174. His quilt patterns have appeared in McCall’s Quilting, McCall’s Quick Quilts, The Fat Quarterly and Fons & Porter Easy Quilts. He has also designed patterns for Windham Fabrics and RJR Fabrics. John was one of the panelists at the American Folk Art Museum’s program Quiltmakers: Real Men Quilt in June of 2011 and his HQ Story was chosen to be part of Handi Quilter’s 2012 Ad Campaign. He was profiled in the Summer 2012 issue of Les Nouvelles - Patchwork et Création Textile, the journal of the French Patchwork Association. He has taught quilting at The City Quilter in New York City and the MQX New England Quilt Festival. In his classes he shares the tricks and tips that he has picked up along the way as well as helping students become more comfortable with making color and design choices. John has recently relocated to Rochester, NY (he is originally from N. Tonawanda, NY - a suburb of Buffalo).
Kathy is a cheerful, veteran quilter and a member of the Patchwork Plus family. Stop in and say hello to Kathy on Saturdays. She also has a 12 year background in teaching Nursery School.
Encouraged…to try! Educated… techniques to give success! Inspired… to go beyond!
