GANDHI IN ENGLAND As a child, Mohandas dreamed about going to London to study law. Laxmidas, his oldest brother, paid for his journey. Mohandas bought a ticket and western clothes. The voyage took three weeks. On the ship, he refused to eat meat. Mohandas finished his studies after three years. When he returned to India, he was sad to hear that his mother had died. Later in his life, Mohandas went back to the country and met many important leaders, including King George the Fifth. GANDHI IN SOUTH AFRICA Abdullah Sheth was the head of a law office in Durban. He could not speak English, and he needed someone to help him work with his company’s lawyers. Gandhi was happy to go, because he wanted to have new experiences. However, life was difficult for Indian people there. Once, a judge told him to take off his turban in court. Another time, the guards on a train told Gandhi to move out of a first class compartment because a white person wanted to use it. activity 2  after reading
