General rules Names of people are ALWAYS listed as initials and surname. In the author spot, they are all listed with the surname first. The date is ALWAYS the 2nd element of a citation. If you have no author, move the title of the item to the first position, followed by the date. For all titles EXCEPT periodical titles, capitalize only the first word and any proper nouns. For periodical titles, capitalize all significant words. Volume numbers and running issue numbers for periodicals are considered as part of the title and should be italicized, but don’t italicize issue numbers that are part of a volume. Almost every citation will have some element that is italicized. All citations except those with a DOI or URL will end in a period.
