WaterEnergyNEXUS The Conference The WaterEnergyNEXUS is one of the most important and priority issues to be resolved for both current and next generations. The Sanitary Environmental Engineering Division (SEED) of the University of Salerno (Italy) in cooperation with Advanced Institute of Water Industry at Kyungpook National University (Korea) and with The Energy and Resources Institute, TERI (India) is organizing the second edition of WaterEnergyNEXUS conference, that will be held in Salerno (Italy) from November 14 to 17 of this year. This year, WaterEnergyNEXUS will provide an international platform to share and discuss key topics on such water issues with the presentation of nature-based solutions, advanced technologies and best practices with the support of experts invited as plenary and keynote speakers. An additional aim of WaterEnergyNEXUS conference in 2018 is to contribute to the overall goal of enhancing cooperation, integration and sustainable development in the EuroMediterranean region on critical topics of Water and Energy.
Conference Topics Topics of interest in the WaterEnergyNEXUS conference include, but are not limited to the following aspects: • Nexus framework and governance; • Advanced technologies or nature-based solutions for the environmental sustainability of the water sector • Control of hazardous substances in water and recovery of renewable/valuable resources from wastewater • Energy saving technologies and future clean energy solutions under water constraints • Implementation and best practices
Publications All accepted papers (max. 3 pages) after the pre-conference peer-review process will be published as book chapters in the conference proceedings by Springer Nature. All the works presented at WaterEnergyNEXUS, are candidate for the submission in the collaborating journals (ISI Journals) for inclusion in special issues after the peer review process of the journals.

Welcome To achieve sustainable development for all, water and energy are acknowledged as key components. This is emphasized in Sustainable Development Goals SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy). Energy generation is water intensive with water required for fuel (fossil, nuclear and biofuels) extraction, processing and electricity generation; similarly water and wastewater treatment and supply need energy. The growing contamination of freshwater sources globally has led to proliferation of treatment technologies to address removal of both conventional as well as emerging pollutants; decentralized treatment permitting on-site reuse of the treated wastewater is also gaining acceptance. In the context of making wastewater treatment cost-effective and affordable, interdependence between various aspects of water and energy are being increasingly recognized among water researchers and practitioners. The first edition of WaterEnergyNEXUS was organized in September 2017 in Korea during the Asian International Water Week. In this second edition, we have brought together global leaders as speakers for plenary sessions. The keynotes and technical sessions have also been chosen to cover a broad range of topics covering nexus framework and governance, wastewater treatment through advanced technologies versus nature-based solutions including energy saving options, removal of hazardous substances, resource recovery from wastewater, implementation examples and best practices. We hope the sessions would especially inspire and motivate the young researchers who will thereby create a growing community of practitioners sensitive to the energy cost of providing safe water to all. We are grateful to the UNESCO World Water Association Programme (WWAP), the International Water Association (IWA) and all our patrons for their support. We also thank all the speakers and participants for joining us. Guide for Delegates Accepted extended abstracts must be presented by one of the registered authors. All presenting authors and conference delegates are required to pay the conference registration fee and are responsible for making their own travel and lodging arrangements. Oral Presentations Accepted extended abstracts, as the oral podium presentation, will be selected in two of the following options: regular and short presentations. Regular presentation: each presentation should be a maximum of 12 minutes long allowing for 3 minutes of questions (Q&A) so that the total time per presentation does not exceed 15 minutes. Short presentation Each presentation should be a maximum of 5 minutes long, no Q&A is foreseen during the podium presentation. The discussion will be made during the poster session only. All delegates of short presentations are also invited to prepare a poster to support their discussion during the poster session. Podium presentations must be supported by PowerPoint file. Maximum 7 slides are admitted in short presentations. The file must be sent to the following email info@waterenergynexus. org before November 14th. All delegates are invited to check the data and time of their presentations in the updated version of the program available online. Presenters should arrive in the session room 30 minutes before the start of their sessions to report to the session chairs and confirm and check the presentation files. A copy of the presentation must be ready on MS PowerPoint (ppt) in a USB flash drive for any eventuality. Poster Presentations Accepted extended abstracts, as the poster presentation, will be presented by one registered author in the relative poster session. Each poster should be 120 cm long and 80 cm wide. Each author can use the style and the format more useful for its presentation/representation. A full title of the work, author’ names and relative institutions must be reported on the poster; The poster sessions will host also the posters of the works selected as short communications for their discussion. All presenters are required to appear at their poster panel early in the morning of the relative Poster Session. The presenting time is scheduled on conference program twice a day.

The Diocesan Museum of Salerno A Historical Outline The San Matteo Diocesan Museum, together with the diocesan library and archive, has found the ideal premises in the building which used to be a seminary until the late 1980s. Thanks to the involvement of three prestigious institutions, it has become a beacon of culture and a reference point for the city and province of Salerno. The seminary in Salerno was founded by Archbishop Gaspare Cervantes, following the precepts issued by the Council of Trent on 15 July 1563, which provided for the establishment of a training centre in every diocese for young men who wished to become priests. The museum collection was originally the idea of Monsignor Arturo Capone who, in the 1930s, identified some extremely interesting works of art in the sacristy and the Treasury chapel of Salerno Cathedral. The museum was set up in 1935 and the precious works were initially displayed in two small rooms of the building behind the left nave of the cathedral, which were subsequently enlarged by adding other rooms. The collection, which can be justifiably considered a representative collection of southern ltalian art from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century, was moved in 1990 to the premises of the former seminary which had been restored especially for the purpose. The initial core of the collection consisted of art works donated by Marchese Ruggi d’Aragona and Archbishop Isidoro Sanchez de Luna, as well as important works kept in the sacristy of the cathedral. The collection gradually grew over time with the arrival of other works from churches in the diocese and interesting items purchased from the antiquarian market or left as bequests. There are many examples of medieval art which display the cultural influences that marked the regions of southern Italy, which was at the centre of complex commercial and intellectual networks between the East and the West. One of the outstanding exhibits is the cycle of ivory panels which represents the most complete collection of Christian medieval art in the world. The cycle dates to the eleventh or twelfth century together with the set of eleven sheets of parchment from an illuminated manuscript that contain the prayer of the Exultet, which can be dated to the early thirteenth century. The museum collection provides extraordinary evidence for the development of figurative culture in southern Italy from the Oriental-Byzantine tradition to the influences of Giotto, Simone Martini and artists from Avignon, and including echoes of the cultural milieu of artists from the Veneto, the Marches and the Ferrara area. The sixteenth century and the new trends of Renaissance painting, whose pinnacle was expressed by the art of Raphael, are represented by the work of Andrea Sabatini, whose paintings make up a substantial section of the museum. The seventeenth century collection consists almost entirely of Neapolitan works, with the majority of paintings stemming from the traditions of naturalism and a small number of works displaying Baroque cultural influences. The museum also includes a collection of coins from Magna Grecia, Republican and Imperial Rome, the Mint of Salerno and an interesting lapidarium collection of carved and decorated stone. The last section, which consists of antiquarian works, was created from the bequest left in the will of Monsignor Arturo Carucci, who was the director of the museum for over sixty years.

Art Contest Art met Science at “WhEN we are sketching”, a new creative art competition within WaterEnergyNEXUS to design iconic artworks on the event topics, proposing original artworks with a distinctive style. In this contest, Science and Art will work together for disseminating environmental sustainability. Selected works will be exhibited in the conference venue during the event. All winners will be presented with a commemorative certificate and will be acknowledged during the closing ceremony.
Board The commission for the evaluation of the artworks will be composed by the following international experts: dr. Lucas Fabián Olivero (Argentina); prof. Massimo Leserri (Colombia); prof. Salvatore Barba (Italy); prof. Jacques Laubscher (South Africa); prof. Hugo Barros Costa (Spain); prof. Marcel Sanchez (USA). The selection of the winner by the board will be the result of an unquestionable evaluation, and it will take into account originality, feasibility and consistency with the brief presented. The Awards ceremony will be scheduled during the closing ceremony.
Best Paper Awards During the conference, the best papers presented by young scholars, as judged by the scientific committee, will receive awards. Decisions will be based on the following criteria: •• originality and newness of contribution; •• appropriate application of methodology; •• effective communication of the central ideas of the work. All winners will be presented with a commemorative certificate and will be acknowledged during the closing ceremony.
