CIMA at a glance CIMA updates its syllabus and examinations every four to five years following comprehensive consultation and research with employers to ensure it reflects the current needs of business. It was recently rated as an equivalent qualification to a master‘s degree. The syllabus content is international in scope and its structure reflects the importance of both examinations and practical experience. CIMA members require a high degree of firsthand experience of business issues in order to qualify and remain a member of CIMA and with a clear and progressive syllabus framework; CIMA ensures that business management is a core skill-set. The five levels within the qualification are progressive enabling students to obtain formal recognition as they develop through the qualification. As students progress through the CIMA Professional Qualification, the focus on developing skills shifts from knowledge based learning, to application and analysis which equips staff with consultative business skills.

CIMA structure The CIMA Professional Qualification is made up of three learning pillars: enterprise, performance and financial. Each learning pillar is divided into three progressive levels: operational, management and strategic (refer to the diagram below).

6

Study rules & awards Within each pillar, you are advised to study and pass the operational level exams before undertaking the management level exams. You can choose how many exams you take at each sitting when studying these two levels.

CIMA Designatory letters

All Certificate level exams need to be passed in order to begin taking Operational and Management level exams. All operational and management level subject examinations must be successfully completed before attempting strategic level exams. All three strategic level subjects must be studied at the same time, as CIMA requires you to take all three exams together at the first sitting of this level.

CIMA will award eligible active students with designatory letters which they can use after their names. Those who have successfully completed all certificate level papers will receive the letters CIMA Cert BA (CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting). Those who have successfully completed operational level will receive the letters CIMA Dip MA (CIMA Diploma in Management Accounting). Those who have completed management level exams will receive the letters CIMA Adv Dip MA (CIMA Advanced Diploma in Management Accounting).

The fourth and final level (T4) relates to professional competence. To become a CIMA member, students must demonstrate 3 years of relevant work-based practical experience (T4 part A) and pass the case study (T4 part B).

On successful completion of all exams, and once the three years’ practical experience requirements have been met you will gain access to the designatory letters ACMA – Associate Chartered Management Accountant.

CIMA Advantage Our formula for success

+

We will reduce your home-study time significantly Scheduling study time matters and that is why we give you a guided study plan and interactive study support to help you prepare outside of the course time effectively. Books are slowly becoming a matter of the past and therefore we will provide you with electronic versions, course notes, and interactive tests to make your studies more variable.

+

The night before the exam is for sleeping, not for panicing! Even though we emphasise continuous learning, we understand that you will focus your studies especially in the weeks preceding the exam. That is exactly when the block courses will be run and by the time you sit in the examination room, you will still have all the tutors’ tips fresh in your mind.

+

It is time to stop worrying about your exams After the courses, our tutors will make sure you revise efficiently. How? At the end of the course you will sit a mock exam and the tutors will give you detailed feedback on what areas need more focus. You will also receive useful tips and last-minute advice.

Relevant work experience You should begin recording your experience from when you first register with CIMA. You will need a minimum of three years’ relevant practical experience before becoming a Chartered Global Management Accountant (ACMA, CGMA), some or all of which may have been gained before registering as a CIMA student. You are not expected to have covered every single aspect of the Practical

Experience Requirements (PER). A good spread of experience is required across the three areas, with at least 18 months of the three years in the core area. All the experience that you gain, either through a permanent employer, a temporary contract or unpaid voluntary work, will count towards your CIMA practical experience requirement.

Monitoring work experience is a great way to make your employer notice your development. 21 13
