A Power Session for Your Social Studies Classroom Dr. Kevin S. Krahenbuhl

 This lesson is something I have used in 9-12 and

college classrooms (modified for each setting)  The lesson is extremely flexible, relevant for any social

studies course, sets a good stage for inquiry, and has been universally well received from my experiences   I’ll walk us through a very brief modeled example,

provide specific examples I have used this in related to K12 social studies, and then have time for discussion and Q&A

 Explain the role of perspective to your learners  How it influences each of us  How far it extends (primary sources, secondary sources,

news outlets, textbooks, politicians, even my lectures!!)  Explain how perspective relate to success in social

studies  Truth is possible, indeed it is the ultimate aim for

learning but it is HARD WORK!  Places value on author’s original intent and knowing the context before interpreting (fights vs. presentism)

Examples of My Application of this In Social Studies Core Classes History

Government & Politics

Geography

Economics

 Follow-up with several secondary and/or primary source accounts of a relevant historical event to interact with diverse perspectives & pull out the basic facts to be explained thereby establishing the possibility/challenge of doing history  Follow-up with alternative media accounts of a current event (e.g. Fox News to represent a Republican-leaning spin vs. CNN or MSNBC to represent a Democrat-leaning spin) – connect with the role of the media and responsibilities of citizens in a Constitutional Republic  Follow-up with diverse maps created of the exact same location to illustrate how map design influences how we interact with analysis of people and place  Follow-up with a consideration of alternative economic mindsets (Keynes v. Hayek)
